PageCounter CDR Administration Guide Overview and Installation

1

Overview and Installation

PageCounter CDR is a Call Detail Record (CDR) hardware buffer device that captures call

detail information from a PBX equipped with an RS‐232 CDR or SMDR port. The PageCounter

CDR device connects directly to a 10/100BaseT TCP/IP network.

PageCounter CDR integrates with either Equitrac Professional with Call Accounting or

Equitrac Professional Enterprise Edition with Call Accounting. This document uses the term

cost recovery when referring to Equitrac Professional and Equitrac Professional Enterprise

Edition at the same time.

This chapter information about all necessary installation, hardware, and software

requirements to install the PageCounter CDR device.

Overview and Installation: Data Flow

Data Flow

A PBX system tracks raw call detail information. The PageCounter CDR buffers raw call

detail records and sends them to:

• Equitrac Professional with Call Accounting —Or—

• Equitrac Professional Enterprise Edition with Call Accounting

Equitrac processes the call detail data and uses the information to track and report on

phone usage.

Note: This document uses the term Equitrac cost recovery when referencing both Equitrac Professional and Equitrac Professional Enterprise Edition.

Equitrac cost recovery software with Call Accounting combines the call data with rate table

information to calculate and assign a cost to telephone calls. Equitrac then maps the call

costs to the Time and Billing system for billback to clients.

The following is an overview of the typical data flow:

1 A user makes a phone call. 2 The PBX captures raw call data.

3 The telephone switch sends raw call data to the PageCounter CDR via an RS232 adapter

cable.

4 The PageCounter CDR sends information to the Equitrac cost recovery software with

Call Accounting software.

5 The Equitrac cost recovery software with Call Accounting applies costs associated with

each call using rate table information.

6 The Equitrac cost recovery software with Call Accounting then generates reports on

costed call information, and transmits information to the time and billing system. Caution: If the Call Accounting and Equitrac Professional Enterprise Edition software

reside on different servers, configure the PageCounter CDR to

troubleshoot any other initialization problem, contact your Equitrac representative.

Preliminary Information

You must perform the instructions in the next section by accessing the PageCounter CDR

with a different password at the Version Display screen. The Version Display screen

displays during device initialization. PageCounter CDR initialization begins with the

message Equitrac Corporation Initializing then displays the following to indicate

the platform version: Equitrac Corporation Starting Platform Version X.X.X. Be

ready to press the F2 and END keys simultaneously at this time as the Version Display

screen appears only for a brief moment during the initialization phase.

Setting the Correct IP Address

Perform the following procedure to resolve a problem where the PageCounter CDR does

not accept an IP address from Manager Mode.

1 During the Version Display, press F2 and END simultaneously. For information on

Version Display, see Preliminary Information on page 4 ‐ 2. 2 Enter the password and press ENTER.

Live CDR Capture Data Corruption

In some cases, the live CDR capture data is illegible because it

appears as repreated X character or it is garbled. See the

appropriate section below to troubleshoot this issue.

Characters Appear as X’s

The live CDR capture data may display as a series of X’s instead of actual CDR characters.

If this is the case, the baud rate setting is incorrect. Verify the PBX settings and set the baud

rate accordingly. To set the baud rate, see Baud Rate on page 2 ‐ 8.

Data is Legible but Garbled

The live CDR capture data may display garbled text. If this is the case, verify the PBX

settings and reset serial port settings on the PageCounter CDR. To configure serial port

settings in Manager Mode, see Port Settings on page 2 ‐ 8.

Time Zone Options

By design, PageCounter CDR supports all time zones throughout the world. When Equitrac

ships the PageCounter CDR, the default time zone setting is GMT‐05:00. This corresponds to

Eastern Standard Time (US & Canada). This chapter provides information on changing a

PageCounter CDR’s time zone.

Time Zone Options: Setting the Time Zone

Setting the Time Zone

It is important that you set the time zone correctly on your device because the PageCounter

CDR puts a time stamp on call detail records coming from the telephone switch.

Furthermore, the PageCounter CDR sends this time stamp to the time and billing system

for invoicing purposes.

If you need to change the default time zone, proceed as follows:

1 Access Manager Mode. For details, see Accessing Manager Mode on page 1 ‐ 8. 2 From the Manager Mode menu, press the 3 key to select 3 Date Time.

3 From the Date Time menu, press the 2 key to select 2 Set Time Zone. An arrow

displays to the left of the time zone currently in use.

4 Using the ARROWUPandARROWDOWN keys to scroll by line or the F2 and F3 keys to scroll

by page, select the time zone you need. To help make your selection, use the table

Available Time Zones on page A ‐ 3.

5 Press ENTER to return to the Date Time menu.
