Affinity of the mind
Sophie Dahlenburg
Student, Bachelor of Psychological Science
With an interest in how the human mind works and a desire to help people with mental illness Sophie decided to study psychological science.
‘I’ve always had an affinity with how the mind works and my time spent in the military also made me realise that there are a lot of people with mental illness who don’t know where to seek help – I’d like to be part of changing that!
‘Initially my first preference was for another university but after hearing that UniSA’s program was more practically based I changed my preference and I’m glad that I did. The staff have been very approachable and supportive and the facilities are amazing.
‘Receiving my grades at the end of my first year has been extremely rewarding, as are the friendships I’ve made with other students. As I enter my second year of study my goal is complete an exchange semester in the United States of America.’

Wanting to make a positive difference in the community led Lachlan to human services. ‘I chose UniSA as the flexibility of the degree meant I was able to balance study, family and work commitments effectively. ‘The teaching staff have been supportive, accessible and willing to help throughout my studies. It was a highlight working with the academic staff on a research project for my final placement which bought both challenges and rewards.

Making a difference
Olivia Skelton
Student, Master of Social Work
After completing her undergraduate degree in psychology at UniSA, Olivia was attracted to the Master of Social Work because of its focus on social justice advocacy, policy making, and socio-political factors. ‘I’m enjoying studying courses which encourage critical thinking and evaluation of both taken for granted assumptions in society and the popular theories used to make sense of human beings.
‘The practical component of the degree has also been valuable as the South Australian Parliamentary Internship I undertook provided me a platform from which I could try and make a difference in ways that are in line with my values as well as providing me with an insight into political processes.
‘I feel supported by the teaching staff at UniSA who are dedicated and passionate. They have encouraged and supported my political activism and have demonstrated its place in social work.’
