(8) –8–. A R O U N D. T O W N. It’s Actually Happening – Join the Fun! by Patricia Clark Our heartfelt thanks to so many of you who have supported our fundraising campaign for “Celebrate Park,” to everyone who purchased a brick, and to all the caring and philanthropic individuals and organizations who have pledged a major donation. Because of all of you, we are able to fulfill our promise of breaking ground for “Celebrate Park” this spring – which by the way, is right around the corner. This has been a wonderful collaboration by all in our community to build something we will all enjoy as a St. James family well into the future. Our Bricks & Blocks Campaign is ongoing and will continue to allow civic minded contributors to commemorate and honor their loved ones, leave a special message or a whimsical thought long after the park is built. But now is the time to keep those donations coming – Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Graduations – any special occasion – is a great time to carve your message while making a. difference in the St. James community. We hope you will join us in our Virtual Art Auction on St. Patrick’s Day. A portion of the proceeds will go to the park building fund, as well. We are happy to partner with and support many of our local restaurants – Husk & Vine, Pietro, Basil, Patio Pizza and Villa Sorrento – and we thank you for patronizing them. We hope you will enjoy a delicious dinner delivered to your home as part of your enjoyable evening. We encourage you to join our organization and participate in our 2021 Membership Drive! For $20 anyone – an individual, family, senior or a local business can be a part of our Celebrate Family for a year. With a paid membership, we are also offering a discounted “Hometown Heroes” calendar for $5 (a $10 value), which can be picked up at Natalie Weinstein Design Associates (459 Lake Avenue, St. James) or we will send one to you. You will also be kept informed about our progress on. Weekly Maintenance. the park, future events for all to enjoy, and be a part of planning future activities. In the virtual world, we have started a virtual book club with a lively discussion and great conversation on the 4th Tuesday evening of each month. In the “real” world, we are looking ahead to summer (will it ever arrive?) and we will soon be setting our roster of summer concerts and the location. For more information about becoming a member, joining the virtual book club, ordering a brick, making a donation for the park, or any other questions, please call or text 631-984-0201 or send an email to: celebratestjames@gmail.com. (14) – 14 –. A R O U N D. T O W N. A Letter to the Community Dear Friends and Neighbors, The impact of Covid-19 is being felt by us all, and we find our American Legion Post in need of financial help. The Sherwood Brothers American Legion Post 1152 located at 95 Lake Avenue here in St. James has been part of the local community for 67 years. Our compliance to recommendations, rules and regulations imposed to contain the Covid-19 spread have limited our membership’s participation in our fraternal organization and hampered our ability to serve the general public and one another. A major source of revenue for our organization has always been the rental of our facility to the public – many of you have probably attended birthdays, baptisms, graduation parties and even weddings at our post. We depend on this revenue, as our. dues are not sufficient to support our facility. Covid-19 has greatly impacted this major source of support. We are reaching out to you at this time asking for financial assistance so our veterans may continue to serve the community. Please consider a gift to those veterans who have served our country in the past. Help us continue to be a visible reminder of past and present military service. We support the youth of our community by allowing Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops to meet at our post. We have sent many young men to American Legion Boys State summer camp and have given our local high school bands scholarships. If you are a veteran of U.S. Military service please consider membership in the American Legion and join our post. We gather. every Friday morning for coffee and conversation and you are always welcome to stop by. If you are the spouse or child of a veteran, consider joining our Ladies Auxiliary or Sons of the American Legion groups. Your donation will help us to meet the ongoing costs that cannot be met by our dues alone. Thank you to all who have donated and for their generosity. A special thanks to Fresh Catch Seafood for assisting us with a weekly donation. (20) – 20 –. T H E. W I N E. D O W N. What Does ‘Organic’ Mean? by Rick Masters A food is labeled as “organic” as proof that a specific set of protocols were observed during its production as per regulations in the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990. This is a legal certification by the National Organic Program, which is site-specific and meant to convey a more natural, ecologically-friendly approach to the agricultural process; this means there are no synthetic pesticides allowed, and that artificial additives must be kept to a minimum. Livestock is to be raised in an environment where it can feed as naturally as possible, and without growth hormones or routine antibiotics. Organic farming methods are generally considered to be more healthy for animals, human beings, and the planet. In Europe, there was no “organic wine” – only “organic grapes” – as vintners already honored centuries-old traditions that focus on regional characteristics, organic agriculture and. a less-processed, “hands off” style of winemaking. However, since 2012, the European Union has regulated what can be labeled as “organic;” there are specific production techniques, and the amount of sulfites – some naturally occurring during the fermentation process, some possibly added as a preservative – must fall below a certain threshold. It’s known that sulfites can trigger allergic reactions ranging from headaches to breathing difficulties in sulfite-sensitive wine drinkers. Pro-Tip: White wine has more sulfites than red, as do cheaper, large-production wines. Classically produced European wines should be lower n sulfites. In the United States, a movement toward organic wine production has continued on page 74. OUR TOWN • MARCH 2021. Frey Vineyards Organic Cabernet Sauvignon.

A train killed her cow and she tried to collect damages from the railroad and had no success so she tried the fat from the cow and each day would paint the tracks with the grease so that the east bound train could not make the incline in front of her house. It was not long after this that the railroad paid her for her cow.” (Norman O’Berry’s Notebook, on file in the Long Island Room of the Smithtown Library.) The railroad brought other disruptions to the little country village of St. James. One impact that had not been considered were the huge fires caused by sparks flying out of the locomotive smokestacks. Great fires swept through Smithtown woodlands during the 1880’s and destroyed the last vestiges of Smithtown’s virgin forests. These fires were directly attributable to sparks from the smoke stacks of the steam locomotives of the Smithtown and Port Jefferson Rail Road. In the town records is the following account of a tremendous fire that took place in the Smithtown-St. James area: “In 1882, a special train left Smithtown depot headed east. It had proceeded but a short distance when sparks were seen to fly out of the stack of the engine, and falling on dry leaves in the woods beside the tracks, great waves of flame soon rose high in the air. The fire spread behind the residence of J. Lawrence Smith… and onto the premises of George Strong and George Hallock. Smithtown inhabitants turned out en masse and fought the fire with every available means…. This part of the fire was even described by a by-stander as terrible. The wind was blowing briskly from the northeast and the fierce fury of the fire made the wind still stronger….. S P E A K I N G.

So impetuous was the fire that in many instances it would leap 200 feet or more and leave spots unburned. The sight at night was one of awe-inspiring beauty, the tall trees being one mass of glowing coals and the great area of burning underbrush fairly reddened the sky.” (Harry D. Sleight, Town Records of the Town of Smithtown, New York, 1929, p. 421-422. In spite of the serious disruptions and damages caused by the railroad, there were many good impacts that the railroad had upon St. James. For one thing, the railroad made it much more convenient and faster for farmers to get their goods and produce to New York City markets. And it made it possible for businessmen to make a daily commute from New York City to St. James “Of the new means of transportation, it was said that ‘frequent trains supplied an inducement for the. Growing in popularity as a summer resort, many tourists came to visit” and found places to stay in hotels and boarding houses that sprang up. One of the places where tourists stayed was Tony Farrell’s Shore Inn. Built in 1901 on a bluff overlooking St. James Harbor, just north of Thompson’s Landing, the Shore Inn catered to actors and show business people who travelled out to St. James to escape the oppressive heat of summer in the city. The show business folk came to breathe the fresh country air and relax in the sunlight, while enjoying such pursuits as fishing, boating, swimming, clamming, dancing, baseball games, and the company of their fellow actors. The village became a popular retreat for actors and many purchased homes in the area. By the summer of 1903, some 100 actors were making an annual pilgrimage to St. James, making the trek back and forth from the City on the railroad. The St. James Hotel was one of the first buildings to be built south of North Country Road. Erected on the little triangular continued on page 26.

This became the hotel where New York City folks liked to stay when they came out to St. James for a vacation. The hotel had the latest conveniences, gas lighting and indoor plumbing. In the fall and winter, hunters stayed in the hotel and spent their time hunting in the wooded areas to the southeast of the village where they shot quail, rabbit and deer or they ventured into duck blinds and punts on St. James Harbor from which they shot ducks and geese. This development called St. James Park was actively promoted by the House and Home Company in conjunction with the Long Island Rail Road. Houses were sold at $300, $400, and $500 on lots that were laid out in a grid pattern created by the intersection of streets and avenues that were systemically drawn, with streets running east to west and avenues running north and south (just like New York City). The first house erected in Boomertown was built by Mr. Erland in 1898 near the railroad tracks in the area of today’s Gaynor Park. Others followed rapidly. It is said that lots were marketed to immigrants as they came off the boats at Ellis Island. This might account for the presence of so many Germans, Norwegians and Swedes in St. James. At the end the 19th century, St. James was slowly transformed into an estate area. North of the village, on land that surrounded St. James Harbor and St. James Neck, old farm houses were purchased by wealthy individuals continued on page 28.

This part of St. James became an area of large estates with the surrounding acreage remaining under cultivation. One of the first individuals to purchase an old farm house and convert it into a country estate was the famous architect Stanford White. Shortly after he married Bessie Smith, the youngest of the five daughters of John Lawrence Smith, Stanford White purchased the Carman Farm on Moriches Road. The farm was remodeled on three separate occasions – in the 1880’s, 1890’s, and at the turn of the century – as Stanford White modified the house to suit his taste. The house, known as Box Hill, stands today, a unique example of a farmhouse that was converted into a summer residence and a country estate. The house known as ‘Sherrewogue’ was built by Adam Smith, the son of the Patentee and has an east wing which is thought to predate 1688. Stanford White modified the original house for his sister-in-law by adding a west wing and a porch that practically doubled the size of the house and converted the house into an elegant country estate. The Smithtown and Port Jefferson Rail Road continued from page 28 Cornelia Stewart Smith married Prescott Hall Butler and they purchased a tract of land to the north of Box Hill and built an impressive wood and brick mansion overlooking Stony Brook Harbor. Louise Nicoll Smith married Frank Sayre Osborne, and they established a residence opposite the present-day Nissequogue Country Club. Kate Annette Smith married Reverend Joseph Bloomfield Wetherill in 1879 and moved away from Smithtown. But when her husband died in 1886, she returned to be with her sisters in St. James. She acquired a large tract of land that adjoined Stanford White’s estate on the east side. In 1892, White began the construction of a house that he designed for his sister-in-law. High on a hill overlooking Stony Brook Harbor, he. oversaw the construction of a magnificent, octagonal house of fieldstone and glass. Built in the shape of a Maltese cross, the house is a classic example of Stanford White’s work and is representative of the ‘Gold Coast’ estates that were built in this time period around Stony Brook Harbor. The presence of these large estates offered employment opportunities to many residents in the St. James area and brought in new people. The workmen who moved into St. James in the last quarter of the 19th century found living quarters on the estates were they were employed or had new homes constructed along North Country Road, west of the St. James Episcopal Church. Many of these homes can still be seen along North Country Road in this area.. OUR TOWN • MARCH 2021. All of these factors worked together in promoting the growth of St. James. Gallery North Presents Laminar Rituals Gallery North is pleased to announce their forthcoming exhibition, Laminar Rituals, featuring the work of artists Sue Contessa and Anne Raymond. The exhibit will be on view from April 8 to May 16, 2021. Abstraction for both Sue Contessa and Anne Raymond, creates a sense of space. The unique abstractions in Laminar Rituals employ transparent or translucent layers that laminate and protect the artist’s delicate marks or brushstrokes, suggesting emergent qualities beneath a thin veil of paint. Contessa’s layers of alternating transparent and opaque marks are produced with acrylic paint, some with graphite as well. Her works invite an almost meditative or ritualistic engagement with her carefully placed marks. which themselves appear to emerge from an endless void or deep space.. solo exhibitions. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the Heckscher Museum of Art.. Building up each canvas with rich layers of translucent color, Raymond utilizes a similar, almost ritual coating of the surface that shrouds the canvas in oil paint. Each coat allows slow discoveries, sometimes long after our first encounter, of the evanescent qualities of the natural world – a passing storm, the swell of a sunrise, or the wavering branches above our heads.. Anne Raymond, based in East Hampton, NY., attended the School of Visual Arts, and has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Her work can be found in many major public and private collections including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.. This two-person exhibition will feature medium and large scale oil and acrylic paintings as well as monoprints. Sue Contessa lives and works in St. James, NY. She attended Boston University, and has shown in numerous group and. The artists will be participating in Gallery North’s Virtual ArTalk series on Saturday, April 24, 2021, from 6-8 p.m. In conjunction with the exhibition, Anne Raymond will lead a Monotype Workshop at the Studio at Gallery North, 90 North Country Road, Setauket, on April 10, 2021 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. For more information call 631-751-2676 or visit exhibitions@gallerynorth.org..
