Against these smugglers, th e little sailing cu tters of th e old days have given w ay to a fleet o f several hundred sw ift picket boats, stu rd y steel c u tters w ith turb o -electric drive, sixteen pow erful destroyers. Seven b ra n d - new, 165-foot D iesel-pow ered p a tro l b o a ts were recently added to this service in th e vicinity of N e w Y ork. An ever-tightening cordon is being d raw n a ro u n d o u r 10,000 miles of coast.

C ap tu re o f the ru m -ru n n er is only one of m any duties of the C oast G uard. M ore th a n 300 wrecks, derelicts, a n d o th er dangers to navigation are destroyed each y ear by ram m ing, gunfire, or Explosives. L aw s re­ lating to navigation, quarantine, a n d n e u ­ trality m u st be enforced. M edical aid is rendered to vessels engaged in deep-sea fish­ ing. R eg attas an d m arine p a rad e s are p a ­ trolled. P ro tectio n is given to seal herds, gam e, and salm on' fisheries in Alaska. M edi­ cal a tte n tio n , police pro tectio n , provisions, a n d legal services are carried to isolated villagers of the fa r n o rth .

IN C E th e fateful night in April, 1912,

w hen th e T itanic ram m ed an iceberg off the G ra n d B anks and sank w ith the loss of 1,500 lives, tw o cu tters have been detailed each spring to p a tro l the danger region, noting the size, position, a n d d rift of icebergs floating near the shipping lanes, and broadcasting the in fo rm atio n to passing vessels. F ro m 1,500 to 2,000 ships, $ 10,000,000,000 in p roperty, and 1,000,000 lives pass through this zone each season. D ue to its w atchfulness, n o t a single ship h a s been lost by collision w ith an iceberg since the p a tro l has been in operatio n .

M ost im p o rta n t of all the duties of the C oast G uard, how ever, and the one pursued a t the expense of all the others w hen oc­ casion dem ands, is the rescue of lives a n d ships. T o this end, every officer m u st be a hero as well as expert seam an. F ro m D e­ cem ber to M arch, the m ost h azardous m o n th s of the year, c u tters of the service continuously plow th rough th e danger areas, a le rt for the call of a disabled ship. M ore th a n 250 active land stations, w ith launches a n d surf boats ready to push into the w aves, keep w atch from the shore.

D uring the fiscal year ending in 1931, the officers, c u tle r crews, and su rfm en assisted vessels and cargoes w o rth $47,959,465, and saved 5,627 lives. D uring the last eighteen years, th e value o f property saved is m ore th a n $600,000,000 and m ore th a n 50,000 persons w ere rescued.

racks. Behind these, low er 011 the slope, are

the m achinery building an d the enlisted m en ’s q u arters. T he com bined arm o ry a nd gym ­ nasium , a n d the athletic field overlook the river and w h arf.

C aptain R andolph Ridgely, Jr., is the first su p erin ten d en t of the new Academ y, coming to the position from the com m and of the N ew Y ork D ivision o f the C oast G uard. C aptain Ridgely served in the W orld W ar, in the subm arine zone.

Superchargers, driving a blast of air into the c arb u re to r to m ake up for th e reduced pressure in rarefied atm ospheres, help these gasoline m otors. T hey are heavy, how ever, adding to th e weight of the plane, and they never com pletely prevent loss of pow er at high_altitudes.

N ow consider the steam engine. It loses no pow er a t all w ith altitu d e an d gains in effi­ ciency the higher it goes! T h is is bccause the pressure on the exhaust is less in th in air th an a t sea level. T hus the perfection of the flying steam engine is a vital step to w ard conquering the strato sp h ere.

Realizing these facts, inventors in various p a rts of th e w orld have been w orking to w ard the goal achieved by the Besler brothers. In A kron, Ohio, last fall, a local inventor, H arold C. John so n , announced the com pletion of a steam engine w ith tw o opposed cylinders, w eighing, com plete w ith boiler, only 146 pounds.

Some m o n th s earlier, it became know n th a t the G reat Lakes A ircraft C om pany, a t Cleve­ land, Ohio, w as w orking upon an experim ental steam -d riv en biplane. R ecent dispatches from France rep o rted th a t a P aris m echanic had p erfected a light steam pow er p lan t for a ir­ planes. A n o th er news item , com ing from Sw eden, to ld of steam -tu rb in e engineers who are w orking on a new -type tu rb in e for a ir­ c ra ft use, while a th ird , from Italy , carried the in fo rm atio n th a t G. A. Raffaelli, an a ero n au ti­ cal engineer, had announced a steam engine for stra to sp h ere m achines.

“ W h a t’s the secret of the stu ff? ” inquired K ennedy .as he exam ined the cracked su r­ face of the safe glass.

“ I t ’s no secret,” replied Gus. “Safe glass is m ade of tw o polished pieces of plate glass cem ented to a center sheet of tran sp aren t plastic m aterial like celluloid. T his center sheet is tough yet pliable and holds the o u ter an d inner glass in place when it cracks.

" H P H IS black edging,” Gus continued, “is a w a terp ro o f cem ent th a t seals over the edge of the plastic filler. A fter the tw o sheets of plate glass an d the center sheet are bonded together under pressure and heat, the sheet of safety glass is dipped in acid. T he acid eats aw ay the plastic filler and form s a shallow groove aro u n d the sheet. W hen cem ent is forced in this groove, the plastic center is sealed in airtig h t. M oisture and air can ’t get at it.”

Jo e C lark, standing in the garage d o o r­ w ay, listened in ten tly as his p a rtn e r ex­ plained the process. “D o you know how they discovered the stu ff?” he called when Gus had finished.

“A bout th irty years ago some French scientist w as using a so rt of liquid celluloid in his w ork. One d ay he forgot to cork the bottle. Of course, the liquid evaporated and left a th in layer of celluloid, o r som ething like it, on the inside of the glass bottle. Ik- p u t the b o ttle aside and forgot ab o u t it u n ­ til one d ay he accidentally knocked it from the shelf. I t crashed to the ground, b u t in­ stead of sm ashing to bits, it shattered, hold­ ing its shape. T he hardened liquid held the cracked bits of glass in place. T h a t gave him an idea a nd sho rtly a fte r sh atterp ro o f glass

was developed.”

“ B ut doesn’t all glass of th a t kind get discolored a fte r a tim e ? ” K ennedy inquired* “ N ope,” Gus told him. “T h e seal I juij told you ab o u t stops discoloration to a grcnj extent and a new ty p e of tran sp aren t filli sheet has been developed th a t’s no t affecti by the su n ’s rays. Gus chuckled. “Y o u ’re right, t h a t ’s all I did bu t it told the sto ry . And th a t's th e sim plest w ay to find out w h a t’s the m a tte r w hen a car overheats. Y our rad iato r w as cooler a t the b ottom than at the top. T h a t show ed m e th e w a ter w asn’t circulating. If it had been ho t all over, I ’d have know n the w a ter w as circu lat­ ing b u t n o t as fast as it should.

T he m echanic agreed w ith a nod. “ A nd the tough p a rt of it is, loose fan belts cause a lo t of o th er troubles especially w hen the fan belt runs the generator as well as th e fan. I f it slips, th e generator slows dow n. T h a t m eans the generator doesn’t charge th e b a tte ry as fast as it sho u ld .”

“ G o sh !” exclaimed Crow ley shifting into second gear for the long pull up R ound M o u n tain . “ I never thought of th a t. A t th a t rate, you ought to check th e fan b elt every tim e you use the car.”

“T h a t w ou ld n ’t be a bad idea,” Gus agreed. " B u t i t ’s sim pler th a n th at. The fact th a t the fan belt drives th e generator m akes it easy. All y o u ’ve got to do is check th e am m eter reading n o w and then when all the lights are off. I f it reads low er th an usual, the first thing to look for is a loose belt. T h en a b o u t once every m onth let a service m an look a t the belt ju st to m ake sure i t ’s O. K.

“And an o th er th in g ,” Gus w en t on. “Loose fan belts and clogged ra d ia to rs a re n ’t the only things th a t'll m ake an engine o verheat. A w eak ignition coil can cause a lot of trouble too. If the coil is breaking dow n, the engine misses fire an d overheats.

” 1 OTS of tim es a high com pression m o to r -L^ will overheat because the engine gasket has blow n internally. T he cooling w a ter leaks into the m otor and the exhaust fumes escape th rough th e ra d ia to r.”

“M o to rs m ust be like people. As soon as they get sick th ey run a tem p e ra tu re,” C ro w ­ ley grinned.

“R ight, and th a t’s w hy it pays to go over y our car now and then and get it in shape,” said Gus. “ A fter a hard w inter, a car needs some atten tio n . Flush the rad iato r, clean the honeycom bs by squirting a hose a t them from the inside, change to sum m er oil, go over the ignition system , check the carb u re to r, a n d clean up the m o to r generally.

“In oth er w ords,” he concluded “ give y o u r car a spring cleaning if you w a n t y o u r sum m er trip s to be free of tro u b le.”
