Course Description
Social Media Marketing & Analytics is a study of concepts and principles used in social media marketing. Students will examine the uses, marketing strategies and data generated by social media marketing. Subject matter includes foundational social media knowledge, social media marketing strategies, communication, and ethical responsibilities. Standards in this course are aligned with Tennessee State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in Technical Subjects, Tennessee State Standards in Mathematics, and Tennessee state standards in Economics.
Program of Study Application
This is the third course in the Marketing Management program of study. For more information on the benefits and requirements of implementing this program in full, please visit the Marketing website, www.wshsmarketing.com.
Honors: SCS gives 3-point to the end of each quarter grade, and each semester exam averages. The
curriculum is designed to be rigorous and challenging. Students should understand and not become to over-reliant on these added points. To my knowledge no college/university or job give points or a pay check just for showing up. In this course students will obtain industry certifications in Hootsuite, platform and social media
Student Expectations and Requirements
The students are expected to:• Be punctual and come to class prepared.
• Participate in class discussions, group activities, project presentations, etc. • Develop oral and written projects to be presented to the class.
• Develop professional leadership and teamwork skills.
• Start working on Bell Ringer Journal immediately so class can begin within 3 minutes of the bell. • Place their cell phones at the Charging Station at the beginning of each class period.
• Begin working on Exit Ticket Journal with approximately 5 minutes left in class.
Students are expected to take ownership and responsibility of their own behavior, concentrate on their work, cooperate with others, and practice the arts of self-control, accountability, and teambuilding skills. Cell Phone Policy
This is become a serious issue over the last few years. I am not looking for phones and certainly everyone at some point forgets to silence a phone. However, the issue of phones becomes problematic when students have them out during class any time, especially during an assessment. I believe that the following actions are appropriate:
• Second offense-phone taken to the office
• Third offense-phone taken to the office and the student’s conduct grade will be lowered for that quarter.
If at any time a student refuses to give up their phone when properly asked, a discipline referral will be issued. The issue is now not about the phone. This not only will require a student to be written up, the student will also receive a “U” in conduct. A parent will be contacted if this accrues.
*I understand family emergencies do occur and that there are times a parent will need to communicate with their child. I highly recommend for those emergencies to call the main office, 901-416-8880, and have your child paged to the office for the message to call home.
Academic Honesty Statement
Cheating and/or plagiarism are prohibited at any time in any class. Cheating will result in a lowered conduct grade, a zero on the assignment, possible expulsion from the Honor Society and from the Honors program. This is a serious offense that students must understand now because universities/colleges take dim view of these offenses usually resulting in expulsion.
• Looking at someone else’s paper during an in-class test
• Use of a cell phone during an assessment in any way. (Lately taking pictures of tests and emailing them to other students has become an epidemic.)
• Blatantly copying someone’ work, for this or another class. If caught the work will be taken up and discussed with the teacher from the other classes if the situation involves another class, a parent will be notified and any student involved (the student copying another student’s work and the student allowing it) will receive a “0” for the assignment. More serious measures will be taken if a second offense accrues.
WSHS Email Accounts and Microsoft OneDrive
Each student is provided with an Office 365 email address through their school login. ALL STUDENTS are REQUIRED to utilize their school email account for communication with the teacher. Microsoft OneDrive is STRONGLY suggested for use of file storage. All classroom assignments/projects will be posted in Microsoft Teams. Work will need to be submitted VIA MICROSOFT TEAMS by the due date.
Attendance Policy
In Case You Are Late or Absent: It is your responsibility to get the course notes, handouts, and project assignments should you miss class or be late (Note: If a child is more than 5 minutes late without a proper
note, they are considered skipping class and will be written up as so!) After 3 unexcused tardy marks the
conduct mark will drop a level for that quarter.
The make-up policy will be in agreement with Shelby County Schools Attendance Policy. An exceptional note: Students are strongly encouraged and recommended not to schedule appointments and/or miss school habitually. Failure to turn in the missing assignment within the five days will result in a zero for the assignment.
Social Media Marketing & Analytics will be taught using a variety of instructional strategies including, but not limited to, cooperative learning teams and class lectures. Projects in this course will include both individual and group projects and presentations are typically required with each.

Assessments
Most student work will be counted as a grade. Class work is done in class. Participation is involvement in class. If a student is not on task, the student is not participating. Class participation points will be earned daily. The only way to receive these points is to be present in class, exceptions if a student has an excused absence. Possible earned points include but aren’t limited to; class activities, in class assignments, on time to class, discussions, daily presentations, bell work, and group work.
The use of technology, PowerPoint, demonstrations, role-playing, group work, lecturing, class field trips, DECA, competition preparation, guest speakers, and class activities are all a part of this course.
Grading Scale A=93 – 100 B=92 – 85 C=84 – 75 D=74 – 70 F=69 and below Class Contribution/Professionalism 5% Class Work 35% Portfolios/Projects 10% Homework 10% Assessments 40% Total 100%
Late Work Policy
The SCS late work policy reflects on the notion that late work can be taken but with a penalty imposed. A time limitation is considered. To be considered for the quarter in which an assignment is assigned, students must have all work turned in by the seventh week of that specific quarter in order to be considered for a grade.
Additional Assistance
Students may request an appointment before or after school should they need extra help. Parents have access to student’s grade through PowerSchool. All effort is made to keep grades up to date.
DECA IS
DECA is co-curricular and an important part of the marketing curriculum- all marketing students are
strongly encouraged to join. As a 2nd or 3rd year marketing student, becoming a DECA member is expected.
DECA dues are $20; includes a WSHS DECA t-shirt, membership pin, national, state, and chapter fees. WHSH always prides itself in being one of the largest chapters in the state of Tennessee with 100% membership.
DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in the areas of Marketing, Finance, Hospitality, and Management. DECA stresses leadership, community service, and excelling in competitive events. By being a part of DECA, a student is given the opportunity to receive thousands of dollars in college scholarships. DECA is an organization that promotes competence, innovation, integrity, and teamwork. DECA also
prepares the next generation to be academically prepared, community oriented, professionally responsible, and experienced leaders.
