GREETINGS FROM

FR. DON ZIMMERMAN

Welcome to Msgr. James E. Hake this weekend! I will be returning from vacation this coming Monday. We hear of the creation story in the Book of Genesis this weekend, and it reminds us that we are not meant to live in isolation, but in community. The Sacrament of Marriage is a wonderful gift of one to another where a man and a woman cooperate with God in the creation of new life that becomes a family. While there are many descriptions and understanding of family within the 21st century, the Creator God yet

makes it possible for each one to find the way to grace and wholeness. Our Holy Father calls us to respect the dignity of every human person, from the womb to the tomb. During the month of October, this Respect Life Month, may we continue to work of helping women and men to consider another option to abortion, support programs that build up the dignity of the persons of physical or mental disabilities, and the care of the person who is of senior, more dependent, age. This year’s theme is: Every Life is Worth Living. Along with the theme for Catechesis this year, Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person, may we find the importance of the care for one another in the Spirit and Life of Christ!

Take care this week and Live Well.

I’m going to be in my first Life Chain today. The cars may not notice me but my mom will. Not much room to wave in here. My eyes are opening so I will practice blinking at people. ”Sometimes moms have cravings. Lynn will share some behaviors to be aware of and offer ways for concerned adults to help kids deal with grief in this free, one hour presentation at St. Mary Parish Center.

Prayers for this week

Intercessions for Vocations: That men and women will be open to the voice of the Lord, asking the Holy Spirit and our Blessed Mother to help them recognize and answer His call to serve Him as a priest, deacon or in the consecrated life, we pray to the Lord

Intercessions for Life: For Catholics throughout the world: May the Holy Spirit help us bear witness to the truth that every life is worth living; We pray to the Lord

TOWARD HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

From the beginning of creation, God intended for people to live together in relationship with one another. Much of scripture shows us how to do this as it illustrates and clarifies God’s plans. The readings this weekend guide us in the value and care of our relationships. Specifically, the Gospel focuses on the circumstances of failed relationships. Unlike the Pharisees, we would do well not to focus on the laws that pertain to failed relationships, but concentrate instead on what God really intended for us. Healthy bonds require a lot of our time and energy. They certainly require trust and honesty. Jesus demonstrated a deep commitment to his friends and to us. As our brother, he gave his very life for us. Children work hard at friendships. They trust, forgive, and love without conditions. The final words of today’s Gospel invite us to welcome Jesus and the people of our relationships with the fresh enthusiasm of a child. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Vocation Prayer—Lord God, in your tender mercies you give your holy people every good gift. We turn to you today in

our need, asking that you bless our Diocese with an abundance of vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Inspire us with your Holy Spirit to help young men and woman hear your call and respond with joyful hearts. We also ask that you bless our priests and all who serve us in the Church today. May they know every grace and joy as you bring to completion the many good works begun in them. We ask this in faith, through Christ our Lord. Amen (Pray daily for Vocations)

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The old world of what we call canonical penance, or the extraordinary one-time public repentance of sinners, began to collapse with the conversion of Constantine in the early fourth century. It tottered for a hundred years or so and then virtually disappeared. It served an isolated and persecuted church well, but once people began seeking baptism for economic and political privilege, a real pastoral crisis exploded. There were more lukewarm Christians afoot, and some “barbarians” rampaging through the ruins accepted baptism just because their leaders did.

As the old structures collapsed, people who still sought some sort of public conversion scampered off to the desert to live in monastic isolation. Penance disappeared from the parish scene, and the old bench where hungry penitents used to beg for prayers was empty. Some bishops faced the crisis by inventing alternate means of discipline, all more private than public. A person might be asked to refrain from receiving Communion for a time, or even to accept some sort of corporal punishment (the pedigree of the stocks and scarlet letters of colonial America). This had the effect of separating the sinner from the prayerful intercession of the gathered church, and made an already bad situation worse. Before long, the pastoral system of penance was in a shambles, and sadly irrelevant to ordinary Christians.
