Zooming Into February

How about those Yipes, Stripes! quilts? It was truly amazing to see what can be done with striped fabric and a quilter. A shout out to Linda Bailey and all of her hard work on this year's challenge, and thank you to all of the quilters submitting an entry. Talent certainly abounds in our guild.

I hope those that went to the “First Friday” connection at St. Ann’s enjoyed the library, checking out the raffle quilt, signing up for the center medallion kit, renewing guild memberships, turning in postcards for quilt show, or dropping off community quilts, placemats and pillowcases.

“First Friday” will be back at St. Ann’s on March 5th, May 7th and June 4th. Good Friday falls on the first Friday in April, so we will not be meeting on that date. Remember to wear your masks and name badges.

Don’t forget to sign up for this month's guild meetings. Maria Shell will be zooming in from Alaska with two different lectures. If you can, make sure and sign up for both the evening and day meetings. The evening lecture will be

Traditional-Art-Modern, Notes from the Field.

Maria’s day lecture will be

Patchwork to Artwork, Journey of an Alaskan Quiltmaker. Both

lectures sound wonderful.

I look forward to seeing everyone on Zoom!

EVENING LECTURE - Thursday, March 25 7 pm

“QUILTING – A CREATIVE ACT OF HOPE” DAY LECTURE - Friday, March 26 11 am

“REVERSE APPLIQUE – REVEALING BEAUTY”

Members can attend lectures for free. Meetings will begin at the usual times: 6:45 pm and 10 am. Non-members can sign up beginning February 5, and pay a $10 fee for either lecture on line at

www.ecqg,com/meetings-programs

Margaret will also teach a three-hour virtual workshop.

WORKSHOP - Saturday, March 27 1-4 pm “REVERSE APPLIQUE IS FUN”

Virtual workshops are great for seeing techniques up close and personal instead of looking over another quilter’s shoulder – especially for this wonderful HAND technique workshop. The workshop is limited to 20 participants. A kit is

required and can be ordered from her directly

through the REGISTRATION FORM on our ecqg.com website. There is also “prep work” for this workshop (detailed, along with the supply list on the form).

Members were able to register for this workshop beginning January 5. There were still a few slots available before the registration opened to non-members on February 5. The kit must be ordered by March 5.

Margaret also offers a one hour coaching session on Saturday, April 3 from 1-2 pm for workshop participants. They will need to register for this free session during the workshop. For more

information on Margaret, please go to the website.

We are excited to welcome Kathy Doughty, a true “Rock Star” in the global quilting world, zooming all the way from Australia.

(materialobsession.com.au) Kathy is co-owner of the wonderful “Material Obsession.” Kathy offers us a fresh, colorful and exciting new look at quilting.

Only ONE virtual lecture will be presented: LECTURE - Thursday, April 29 7 pm

“THEN to NOW – HOW DID WE GET HERE?” It will be zoomed to the combined Evening and Day Guild groups (members meet at the usual 6:45). The presentation will be her personal story and a slide show of some of her amazing quilts. Members can attend the lecture for free. Non-members can attend by signing up and paying a $10 guest fee beginning March 5. (see website link below)

Kathy will also teach a four-hour virtual workshop.

WORKSHOP - Saturday, May 1 2-6 pm EST “TAKING SHAPES – MODERN WEDGE”

Members can register beginning Feb 5. Non-members can register for remaining slots or a waiting list beginning Feb 22.

Kathy offers optional kits for this workshop. They can be purchased from her through a link on our registration form and must be ordered by Feb 27 (to allow shipping time from Australia).

Her workshop is limited to 35 registrants.

For workshop participants, the session will be recorded and can be viewed for one week. Kathy will be available to answer questions and critique participants' work.

Here is the REGISTRATION FORM.

QUILT SHOW 2022 & RAFFLE QUILT UPDATES

2022 may seem like a long way off, but it’s not too soon to think about what quilts you’ll be entering and how you can help. One of the ways you can start helping is to make postcards and items for the Quilt Store.

Items for the Quilt Store should start at a value of $25. Small quilts, bags, totes and other quilty items are perfect items to donate.

Start making quilts for consignment. This is a great way to make a little money and help the guild. The guild gets 25% of the selling cost and pays the taxes on the sales. It’s a win/win for everyone!

Postcards are a hot commodity at the show. Any and all designs, themes and baubles are welcome. The template for printing the postcard backing can be found on our website HERE.

Linda Bailey and Peggy Tanger will be at our First Friday events at St. Ann's Catholic Church to collect postcards and give out pre-printed backings. More information on our WEBSITE.

Ticket sales are going well, but there is a significant number of members who have not purchased or sold their $20 worth of raffle tickets. Members are required to sell or purchase $20 worth of raffle tickets per our bylaws. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. You get 24 tickets for $20.

We’ve made purchasing tickets very easy. First, you can go to our First Friday events to pick up, drop off, or purchase tickets. Second, you can go to our website to the “special” member’s only page and purchase tickets. You have the option to keep all the tickets for yourself, or to contact Liz at

raffl[email protected] and let her know the names you want entered on the tickets. Third, you can send Liz a check and she will send you the number of tickets you order.

Tell your friends, family, co-workers and others to go to the public-facing portion of our website and purchase their tickets there. They can order in bundles of 6 for $5.

When someone purchases tickets from the website, Liz will fill out those tickets for you. Within about 10 days, she will take a picture of the filled out tickets and send you an email with that picture. The tickets will then go into our hopper and wait for the big day. The drawing will be held on

Lydia - 31 3/4 x 34

"During a FaceTime call with my niece, I took her picture, then altered it using the Imaengine app on my iPad. I think it made an interesting quilt with striped fabric; the challenge was the perfect opportunity!"

SECOND PLACE: MARGARET WILLIAMS Love Your Neighbor - 36 x 41

"This quilt was created using scraps from the great mask-making project of 2020. I made many masks that were donated to people all around the country. There are so many stories, each fabric contains the memory of someone: nurses, teachers, friends, strangers, kids, a group of Native Americans, even the woman I saw wearing one of my masks as I left the polls after voting in November. Each of the strips is about 1/4" wide, and the black and white lines are leftover elastic."

"This quilt was begun before the Pandemic as an experiment with the fall 2019, Kaffe stripes and a kaleidoscope ruler. Since it was returned to me from Regina Carter who long armed quilted it after the March lockdown, I consider it one of my several pandemic quilts of 2020."

YIPES, STRIPES! CHALLENGE - 2

HONORABLE MENTION: BEN HOLLINGSWORTH Improvisation #1 - 60 x 36

"This improvised quilt was inspired by my collection of striped fabrics. I began by sorting them into darks and lights. Then I cut swatches from each at an angle to the print. Those pieces were sewn together and then cut into smaller pieces. Then those were sewn together and repeat. Once there was enough that were wide enough, they were cut into 4 inch strips and sewn together into longer strips. Finally they were sewn into alternating dark and light strips. The final step was to add the dangling parts and beads."

HONORABLE MENTION: JUDY WEATHERS A Curious Garden - 32 x 32

"This quilt has pieced black and white fabric strips as background blocks with fused striped fabric flowers. I quilted straight lines going vertical and horizontal. This garden has a striped virus going on."

"As I was planning for my first quilt, I discovered Kaffe Fassett's "Shirt-Stripe Boxes" pattern and knew I had to try it. Instead of purchasing men's shirting fabric I found wonderful men's shirts in soft blues and yellows at Goodwill. In fact, the only yardage I purchased for this quilt was the back - a stripe of course! When it was time to quilt the top I turned a master - Kathy Nesler. She recommended the circular design, as a contrast to all the squares in the quilt. I love the result! I also incorporated one of the shirt pockets into the quilt label and several of the shirt cuff bands to create a sleeve for hanging." HONORABLE MENTION: LOUISE CLYNES

The "Yipes, Stripes!" quilts were amazing – beautiful, creative, heartfelt, whimsical, and sometimes bittersweet. Our virtual parade worked so well, and many guild members have commented that they liked having the option of reviewing them and voting online. Thanks to Carolyn Powers, Shelby Smith, and Linda Agnello for making all that happen!

Now we all will have the chance to see them in person. These fiber art creations will be featured in a show at the Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center Gallery in May 2021. We will be sending more information on this wonderful event showcasing the quilt artists of ECQG.

-ECQG Executive Committee Meeting (1)

ECQG Executive Committee Meeting January 5, 2021 Judy Weathers, President, called the

January meeting of the ECQG Executive Committee to order on Tuesday, January 5, at 10:00 a.m. via Zoom.

Laura Bishop, Past President, thanked

everyone for their work in 2020.

Linda Bailey, 1st Vice President, thanked

the board for the opportunity to serve.

Jan Cunningham, 2nd Vice President,

reported that registration for workshops would open on the 5th of each month. Information about programs and workshops will be on the website, in the newsletter, and sent through Constant Contact. Suggestions and information can be sent to the program team. Virtual lectures will go through June which members will access through Zoom. Non members will register online for $10. After discussion, it was decided that in April there will only be one meeting at 7:00 p.m, Thursday, April 29, with Australian, Kathy Doughty. She will do a virtual 3 hour

workshop on Saturday, May 1 for 30 people. Workshop registration for members will open on February 5 and close on April 22. Non-member registration will open on February 22 and close on April 22. The last date to order an optional kit will be February 27, as they will be shipped from Australia. A blast will be sent giving this information. In the week following the workshop

participants will be able to participate in a one-hour coaching session. The $75 fee for this session will be paid by the guild if 4-5 people decide to participate. All of the information for the lecture and workshop will be on the website. A motion

(Cunningham/Lang) to charge $50 for members and $75 for non-members for virtual workshops was made.

After discussion the motion passed. A

second motion was passed on January 22nd to change the non-member fee for virtual workshops from $75 to $60. This new fee lines up with other guilds non-member fees for their workshops during the pandemic.

Carolyn Powers, 3rd Vice President,

reported that 105 renewals were made in 2020 and 10 renewals had been made in January, 2021. Most renewals occur at the January meeting but that trend might not hold up due to the meetings being virtual. Many members who were contacted about not participating via Zoom said they were keeping up with the guild activities through the newsletter.

Caroline Benefield, Secretary, will

continue to use a sentence format for minutes rather than a bulleted style.

Diana Quinn, Treasurer, stated that

insurance and storage building rent had been paid for the year. The guild has $59,789.34 with $8,623.87 in checking, $100 in petty cash, $4605.18 in the Quilt Show account, and $46,460.29 in savings.

Zoom Meeting Format - There was

discussion about the format of meetings with speakers and non-members on Zoom. The motion (Bishop/Lang) was made to begin the guild meetings at 10:00 a.m. with the program starting at 11:00 a.m.

beginning with the January meeting and continuing until in-person meetings resume. After discussion the motion passed.

Terri Taylor, Quilt Show Chair, said the

committee was not meeting since the show postponement.

Liz Laxson, Raffle QuiltTicket Sales Chair, reported that the ticket sales were

great at the shop in Jasper. Ticket sales there and at Tiny Stitches had collected $1,044. PayPal online sales were $1,301. Total income was $2,345. There was discussion about other places to market ticket sales. Terri Taylor noted that approximately 20 kits from leftover fabric could be made and sold for $20. The committee agreed on that idea. The raffle quilt for the 2022 show will have a different color.

ECQG Executive Committee Meeting (2)

Linda Bailey, 2021 Challenge Quilt Chair, reported on plans for the Challenge

Quilt program at the January meeting. January 25 will be the deadline for entries. All entries will be sent to Carolyn Powers for the virtual competition. She will notify entrants that she has received their entry.

Stella Lang, 2022 Challenge Quilt Chair,

said the theme, to be announced at the January meeting, will be “Cabin Fever”. The criteria will be that at least one log cabin block must be in the quilt and that any style of quilt will be acceptable.

Liz Laxson, Bee Groups Chair, reported

that with people not able to gather, there was not much activity with the Bee groups.

Meredith Mask, 2021 Community Service Chair, gave a shout out to Pat

Smith, 2020 chair, for all she was able to accomplish even with the pandemic. She is planning to have a drop off day in March at St. Ann’s.

Door prizes - Judy Weathers reported for

Deborah Jones, that Deborah would like donations of gently used items for door prizes when in person meetings begin again, hopefully in July.

Karen Kaderlik, Evening Group Liaison,

said that their officers will be selected soon.

Susan Tichler, Hospitality Chair, stated

that her job would not really begin again till in person meetings resumed. She will reach out to non-members who participate in the virtual meetings.

Jan Kramer, Golden Scissors Chair,

cannot be awarded since there are not in person meetings.

Library Co-Chair, Devon Pfeif, said she

needed people to keep their books for donation until closer to time for the next book sale since she has nowhere to store them. Books that have been checked out can’t be turned back in until the guild is meeting in person. Some donated books go in the library and some are sold at the book sale. Book storage is further complicated by

There was discussion about arranging for people to return and check out books at the next charity drop off. Devon and Sally Joerger will explore those possibilities.

Linda Bailey, Marketing Co Chair,

discussed the projects of the Marketing Committee. They are working on a master calendar, promoting programs, and

researching ways other guilds are

functioning during the pandemic. There was discussion about creating small Zoom

interest groups. These would be one time activities unlike Bee groups which are ongoing and they would be topical rather than general interest. This might be a way to involve new quilters.

Victoria Lynn, Newsletter Chair,

discussed the new layout for the newsletter. After discussion it was decided to remove the birthday list from the newsletter.

Linda Agnello, Publicity Chair, shared the

ease of using Constant Contact and how it had simplified her work.

Sharon Milam, Show & Tell Chair, will

resume traditional show & tell after the guild resumes in-person meetings. Carolyn

Powers will continue with show & tell

PowerPoint presentations in the meantime.

Beau Palmer, Sunshine Chair, requested

members contact him if they know someone needs to receive a card from the guild.

Volunteer Coordinator, Linda Agnello,

will reach out to new members to get them involved.

Webmaster, Shelby Smith, was

recognized for all of the work she has done as webmaster, keeping members informed, and keeping all the program information updated.

President, Judy Weathers, thanked board

members for all of their input. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:50 a.m.
