January

This Carlton Courette has just been rejuvenated. We built it about 2005 and it came back for some repairs. Note how the new bar tape matches the pink contrast panel on the head tube. It has some of our favourite parts, including a 3 speed hub, SKS mudguards, Shimano R400 brake levers, and the everlasting Outland pedals.

February

This 1989 Specialized Rockhopper is a classic. By this point the geometry had been perfected, and decadent fripperies like suspension and

aluminium had yet to pollute the rigid purity of the bike. These bikes handle very well and can be used for commuting and touring. This one is mostly used with a childseat.

This bike is an unidentified old steel frame fitted with a contemporary Microshift drivetrain. As well as pink bar tape the customer asked if we had any handlebar tassels. To the annoyance of many present, Martin had some stashed away in his locker and was delighted to find a use for them. Ken was unwilling to touch the bike after this and is using a litter picker to hold the bike for the photo. Smudge the dog is shaking his head in disappointment that the workshop has sunk so low.

This 1939/40 Sun Tourist bike is from our Theatrical Hire collection. It's been in a few things and went on the Tweed Ride for German TV. Note the quadrant gear lever on the top tube, drum brakes, and a rear rack that's laughable by modern standards.

This is a very clean example of the wonderful Dawes Kingpin. Everyone who owns one loves it. This one has been upgraded with alloy rims and chainset.

June

This bike was made with one purpose: to upset men from the West of Scotland. These boring men think bikes should be black, and only black, so with this bike we took a black frame and applied lots of glitter. It sold the first day we were open after lockdown to a woman who fell in love with it. The frame is an unusual old one, probably German, that was made for a back pedal brake and a plunger front brake. We fitted a Shimano 4 speed coaster hub, and a sidepull caliper on the front.

This Fondriest bike was very neglected when it came in. We recabled it and sorted out the riding position. It has a Sachs groupset, which is mostly rebadged Campagnolo.

August

A Danish woman came in to choose a bike. She said, “What I really want is a back pedal brake but you can't get them in this country”. Neil turned to the box of hub gears beside him and picked up a Sachs Tricoaster. We built this Diamondback hybrid around the hub gear and it was perfect for her.

September

This classic 1992ish Specialized Crossroads hybrid has been made into a tourer. It will go offroad as well as any modern "Gravel Bike". These are great frames. They are accurately made, have good geometry and are tough. The customer supplied his own saddle, bar tape and stem mounted gear levers. We normally never fit these parts as the saddle is one of the silly ones with string to “adjust it”, leather bar tape is terrible and stem mounted gear levers can cause horrific injuries.

This restomod Raleigh was built as a getting to school bike for a 14 year old. It looks '80s but has alloy rims and STI gears. The observant will note it says BSA on the frame, but it's a Raleigh with different stickers.

November

A regular customer bought this frame on the internet as he'd always wanted a Flying Scot. Although it has Scot decals, it's not one, it's a fake. Fortunately for him it's something better. The build was done to a budget using parts that while not period correct are sympathetic and work well. .

December

This is a Flying Scot made by M Steel for Dales Cycles. These are sometimes called “Flying Englishmen”. They are better than the Glasgow made Scots. This one has been built to a good commuting/light touring specification with a compact double chainset and wide range cassette. It was that colour when it came in.
