Curriculum

OVERVIEW

The military history program is made up of six, six-credit courses for a total of 36 credits. Each course is approximately 11 weeks in length. The program is designed so you can complete the coursework in as few as 18 months. It ends with a one-week residency and graduation ceremony at Norwich University in June. The program offers four start dates per year: March, June, September, and December.

Your curriculum will include topic-specific courses focused on historical methods and historiography. In your courses you are generally required to complete two short papers, typically 10 pages long, and one long paper. In an effort to introduce you to a variety of different types of history, instructors may have you write book reviews, historiographic essays, book/article analysis papers, or annotated bibliographies.

In each course, you will participate in 10 weeks of asynchronous discussions in small groups. You are required to write discussion postings in response to questions posed by the instructor about each week’s readings. You will also post responses to the comments of your group members, facilitating an interactive and rewarding exchange of ideas.

Students may choose to complete their master’s thesis (by petition only) or a capstone paper. The choice of degree completion project may require a longer program of study, a petition supported by letters of recommendation from program faculty, or a selection of an additional elective in Course 6.

BILL RIDGELY

Master of Arts in Military History Alumnus,

U.S. Army Veteran*

“I chose Norwich because I was very impressed with the faculty, the institution, and the program. The online delivery made it possible for me to participate in the program even though I live in Wisconsin. Attending NU has been gratifying; not only for the intellectual stimulation, but also for the many fine people I’ve met through the program, including classmates with whom I forged strong bonds.”

The Norwich Advantage

NATHAN WHIT TEN

Master of Arts in Military History Alumnus

““I chose Norwich because of its rich history

and traditions, connection to the military, and value. Its commitment to create a better type of servant citizen especially appealed to me. Once I started the program I appreciated the professionalism of the faculty. I know other people who have taken online courses for their education and have had difficulty in getting responses back and grades from their instructors. That’s not the case at Norwich.”

TONY ABBORENO

Master of Arts in Military History Alumnus

“I chose to pursue the military history degree because

I want to start battlefield tours and to write and teach at the college level. I chose Norwich because I have always had a love of military history, and the Norwich program was the first I had seen. I had some great professors during the program.”

(9)

Residency

The culmination of the 18 months of study is the one-week residency at the beautiful campus in the Green Mountains of Vermont. Residency is held in June of each year. During residency, students meet to permanently cement their relationships with their cohort and faculty, exchange ideas, create and foster professional networks, and immerse themselves in Norwich’s campus and legacy.
