The Environment Floor is the place to learn about the Earth including the atmosphere, energy

resources, life forms from reptiles to giant exotic insects, and geology, and introduces visitors to

concepts of environmental stewardship. The Environment Floor also has a "touch tank" where

guests can see marine animals up close, and an estuary with aquatic creatures.

Liberty Science Center is a 170,000 square foot science and technology museum located in

Jersey City, New Jersey. Its stated mission is to be "an innovative learning resource for lifelong

exploration of nature, humanity and technology, supporting the growth of its diverse region and

promoting informed stewardship of the world ."

The Center is designed to stimulate interest in science and provide educational experiences for

the general public and school audiences through interactive exhibits, programs and

demonstrations. It also extends the reach of these activities across the country and around the

world with a menu of offsite and online educational programs.

Well over nine million people have visited Liberty Science Center since its opening on January

24, 1993, and the Center reaches members of the public through a wide variety of innovative

programs. For example, in 2004 Liberty Science Center trained 1,768 teachers in inquiry-based

learning techniques; welcomed over 640,000 visitors to onsite exhibitions, films and programs;

and reached an additional nearly 250,000 learners through offsite programming (figures do not

include visits to the science center's web site).

Liberty Science Center features over 250 hands-on exhibits; a 392-seat IMAX6 Dome Theater,

which is the largest in the U.S. ; and Hi-Def films in the 300-seat J. D . Williams Theater.

Exhibits are arranged by topic on three floors - Environment, Health, and Invention . Each floor

offers hands-on exhibits, periodic live science demonstrations given throughout the day by staff

members, discovery rooms for one-on-one interactions and multi-media presentations .

The Invention Floor showcases structures, energy and light, action and effects, and encourages

the inventors in all of us. It is also the location for major traveling exhibitions from across North

America, which is changed every three months on average .

The Health Floor explores the human body and health issues through exhibits in perception,

bodies in motion and physiology. It also features the Health Floor Theater, where large plasma

screens and interactive videoconferencing technology allow students to watch live cardiac,

neurological or kidney transplant surgeries as they are being performed at area hospitals. During

the program, known as "Live From . . ." (http ://www.lsc .orb/livefrom/IivefromHome.html),

students are able to converse with members of the operating room staff and learn about

educational paths and careers in medicine as well as lifestyle choices that put patients on the

operating room table in the first place. In 2004, Live From. . . was twice broadcast to sell-out

audiences in England with news coverage across Europe and portions of the Middle East.

Liberty Science Center offers online learning resources that include the Science Behind Tobacco,

Deep Sea Science, Engineering, Brain Power, Science in Space, Wind Assessment, Roach

World, Antarctica Adventure, and other web-based learning opportunities . (See www.lsc.org.)

Liberty Science Center helps teachers make science curriculum more lively and relevant through

offerings available onsite, offsite and online. These include Discovery Challenges0 to help

school groups focus on specific tasks during visits to Liberty Science Center; Traveling Science,

bringing science fun to students in area schools; and Electronic Field Trips that reach schools as

far away as Iowa, France and Ireland.

In partnership with the Greater Newark Conservancy and the Newark Public Schools, Liberty

Science Center offers a Community Science Workshop for Newark schoolchildren . The CSW

opened in May 2004. Located in Newark's Central Ward at Montgomery Academy, the CSW is

an after school and summer drop-in center where students can work on self-paced math and

science projects guided by Liberty Science Center staff. The workshop also allows students to

mentor other children.

Teachers can participate in professional development workshops at their schools or at the science

center, and can spend a sabbatical year at Liberty Science Center honing their science and

technology teaching skills. Additionally, Liberty Science Center works with New Jersey's 30

"at-risk" school districts in the Partnership Program with funding provided by the New Jersey

Department of Education for teachers, administrators, students and parents. This program lets

schools develop science curricula, receive teacher training and participate in community nights .

To reach as broad a base of participation as possible, Liberty Science Center develops bilingual

(English/Spanish) programming for the special evenings. In 2004, nearly 57,000 family members

from "at-risk" districts attended Community Evenings at Liberty Science Center.

Each year, Liberty Science Center's Partnership Program staff meets with representatives from

each Abbott District to fashion a customized science education service contract. To facilitate

good communication within these districts, the science center has also established an

Ambassador Program that provides information to lead teacher contacts in every Abbott school,

allowing them to make the best use possible of Liberty Science Center resources.

A variety of special public programs for people of all ages help accomplish the objective of

making science learning engaging and memorable. "Camp-ins" is science- based overnights at

the Center for elementary and middle school-aged students while "Scout it Out" is a program that

supports the scouting zeal for discovery. During Scout it Out weekends, troops can explore

Liberty Science Center on their own, participate in a 45-minute guided program, and/or choose a

challenging activity which focuses on completion of a specific merit badge. Special "Wee Kids,"

high school and home school days offer special group-based activities and programs .
