SERVICES
Housing with Services is a name used for many housing settings. All Housing with Services offer hous-ing, and offer or provide for a fee, regularly scheduled health-related
or supportive services. Registration with the Minnesota Deparatment of Health (MDH) is required. This registration is issued by MDH to settings that provide sleeping accommodations to one or more adult residents, at least 80 percent of whom are 55 years of age or older. Service will vary based on the hous-ing setthous-ing you choose:
• Personal care could include laun-dry, social services, help with mak-ing medical appointments and transportation.
• Services related to your health might include self-care, nursing and home care.
• Meal options will vary.
• Personal spaces will vary. Some have apartments with kitchens, others have individual rooms with shared bathrooms. It depends on the site.
Are you thinking about moving?
Are you thinking about moving to a Registered Housing with Services setting? If so, the Minnesota State Legislature recent-ly made changes that might impact you. Before you sign a lease or
housing contract, you must first call the Senior LinkAge Line® for long-term care options counsel-ing. You will receive a verification number you will need before you can sign a lease or housing con-tract.
Take the following important steps:
1. Call the Senior LinkAge Line® at 800-333-2433. Or, use the Minnesota Relay Service at 711 or 800-627-3529 (TDD). Or call 877-627-3848 (speech-to-relay service).
2. The Call Specialist will ask you some basic questions and discuss your options.
3. At the end of the call you will receive a verification number.
4. Write down the number and put it in a safe place.
5. Watch for the number to come in the mail.
If you decide to move, give your verification number to the housing provider. Do this before you sign a lease or housing contract. If you decide not to move, keep the num-ber in a safe place should you later need it.

In Minnesota there are very clear
laws for facilities that market them-selves as Assisted Living. A facility that is considered an assisted living facility must provide basic services such as 24-hour nursing access and help with,laundry, meals, transportation, assistance with medications, and activities of daily living. A licensed nurse is required for the supervision of staff. There are a wide variety of assisted living facilities, ranging from an apartment style to a family home style. An apartment in an assisted liv-ing facility can have privacy, more than one room, and more indepen-dence, while receiving any needed services. The housing may be totally assisted living rooms, or there may be a few assisted living apartments with-in a larger senior apartment complex. Meals will probably be in a larger cafe-teria-style room. Dementia care has become espe-cially sophisticated in the past 20 years. Both assisted living and nursing facilities have developed dementia care houses or wings of buildings. There are higher num-bers of staff to work with the special needs of older people with demen-tia. Activities are specially suited to the traits of dementia. The facilities typically will have a keypad entry or exit and an alarm monitoring system so the resident is always safe and can’t leave without supervi-sion. Sometimes there are assisted living houses and dementia houses owned by the same company so a person can move when mental abil-ities decrease. The move from one
area to another within the same facility minimizes stress and keeps some familiarity with other resi-dents and staff.

Senior housing cooperatives are similar to apartments, but have a different financial arrangement. Shareholders or tenants live in an apartment building that is owned by a not-for-profit cooperative cor-poration. Residents buy a share in the co-op, and the cooperative owns the land, building, and common areas. Residents are entitled to live in a housing unit as part of their membership benefits. Members pay a fixed amount each month that covers basic expenses including mortgage and property taxes. Cooperatives are “private pay” institutions because of the owner-ship structure.
