McCoy and Ann Ferguson Doub ng Thomas, by Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi da, 1571–1610)

Dear Parishioners of Mary Immaculate and St.

Rose,

“It sounds too good to be true.” How often

these words have passed through my lips. And

that is exactly the frame of mind that Thomas

seems to have in our Gospel today. All the

Apostles except for him have had an encounter

with the risen Jesus. Despite all their

proclama-tions of “He is risen!” Thomas declares that he

will not believe until he sees with his own eyes

the wounds, and even touches them with his

own hands.

The Sunday after Easter the eleven are gathered.

This time Thomas is with them. Jesus again

stands before his Apostles and it seems as if

al-most before his greeting is out of his mouth

Thomas falls to his knees and proclaims his

be-lief saying, “My Lord and my God!”

I have always liked Caravaggio’s painting of

this event. Rather than depicting Thomas on his

knees before the Lord, he paints a doubting

Thomas with his finger in the wound of Jesus’

side, his disbelief persisting until he can see it

for himself.

The mercy that we celebrate on this

Divine Mercy Sunday is that God

will not allow Thomas to persist in

his doubt and unbelief. He shows

Himself so that he might believe.

That opportunity is extended to all

of us. The mercy of Easter is that

God did not want us to continue in

doubt and darkness, but to believe

and have the light of His life! So

let us fall on our knees before our

risen Lord and echo the

proclama-tion of Thomas’ faith: “My Lord

and my God!”

RCIA THE PERIOD OF MYSTAGOGY

Mondays, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

M.I. Parish Center

Apr. 29

The Mystagogy Experience, Divine

Mercy & Life After RCIA

These weeks are spent “unpacking the Mystery of Faith” - dis-covering what difference being “fully initiated” makes, how the Church CELEBRATES RESURRECTION for 50 days until Pentecost, and how the HOLY SPIRIT guides the Church in a unique manner from the Time of the First Apostles up until this day.

For the next year our newly initiated Catholics are called NE-OPHYTES, NEW “Creations” as the Baptismal Rite calls them. We continue to form them in faith for “Life After RCIA.” In particular how the GIFTS & FRUITS of the Holy Spirit are made manifest in the Early Church and throughout our lives today as Church, each a significant Member of the Body of Christ.

This also is a perfect time for people with questions about becoming Catholic to “inquire.” Come & meet our Neophytes. Join our

conver-sation about what it means to be a fully, active, practicing Catholic. For more information contact Pat pat.lehr@miparish.org

or text 573-228-2416.

The Secular Franciscans

at Mary Immaculate Parish meet on the second Sat-urday monthly (May 11), from 10 am until noon, in the Parish Center at 716 E. Wash-ington St. We explore Franciscan spirituali-ty, prayer, and saints.

The Secular Franciscan Order includes both men and women, single or married, ordained or lay. Members do not live in community, but live our everyday lives in the world. However, members do gather together in community on a regular basis. We make a lifelong pro-fession to live out the Gospel according to the example of St. Francis of Assisi. The process of becoming a Secular Franciscan involves a commitment of about three years of formation. There are nearly 13,000 Secular Francis-cans in the United States today and we have hundreds of thousands of brothers and sisters throughout the world.

For more information, you may call Deacon Dave and Thérèse Ream OFS at 660-627-5626, Lynn Carter OFS at 660-988-9279, or Linda Boland OFS at 660-349-8214.

The Diocese of Jefferson City warns the public of what appears to be an ongoing phishing scam involving emails

and texts purportedly from priests or parish/ Chancery staff. This

scam has hit many parishes across the United States. The email or text purports to be from a person the tar-get knows, such as one’s pastor, a parish staff

mem-ber, the bishop or someone else from the Church. If the target responds to the fake email or text, the sender will follow up with a request for some sort of monetary assis-tance, often for gift cards or iTune cards. It is truly unfor-tunate cyber criminals will attempt to exploit the gener-ous nature of our community. Sending emails or texts

asking for cash or gifts cards is not how priests, parishes or the Diocese of Jefferson City seeks financial assistance for our work. If you receive

an email or text from a trusted church personnel asking for assistance, confirm by calling that person and do NOT
