Welcome to the

Nottingham University

Business School MBA

Creativity. Entrepreneurial thinking. Problem solving. Innovation. These are all key skills and attributes that make a real difference in business. The Nottingham MBA programme has been designed to help you develop these skills, which are much sought after by employers from multinationals to start-up businesses.

At Nottingham, we want to:

• develop your leadership potential • encourage innovation and enterprise • globalise your MBA

• and get you to engage with business.

Underpinned by significant research and taught by staff with extensive practical experience, we offer several MBA specialisms including Finance, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Entrepreneurship.

The business world thrives on strong leadership and we focus heavily on developing leaders for business. All our MBA students take leadership modules taught by senior industry figures and a leading international academic writer, which provide a powerful combination of innovative current research and practical understanding and development in leading teams and businesses.

An organisation’s abilities to raise finance economically and then use it effectively are the keys to survival and prosperity. Our Finance specialism aims to produce managers and investors capable of dealing with the opportunities and traps the financial system creates.

Practitioner engagement is also central to the teaching of the Entrepreneurship and Creativity module. At Nottingham, you will get the real world experience employers look for, which will equip you for your future career and potentially your own business. We recognise that business is often intrinsically linked with the media, so our programme provides training in dealing with the media and you will experience a press conference with well-known journalists.

At Nottingham, you will get the global experience before you even graduate. Our teaching is enhanced by study visits to businesses and universities in the USA, China, and South America. You could get direct experience of the White House, the New York Stock Exchange, or Fox News; visit companies like AmChem in Chile; or visit governments in Beijing, Shanghai, and Ningbo, home to our own China Campus. As a business, you will benefit too. You could join the likes of Alliance Boots and Ford, and see how your employees thrive on the skills they hone at Nottingham.

So why not join us?

Dr John Colley

Director, MBA Programmes

John is also non-executive director of several manufacturing businesses. He was previously Group Managing Director of a FTSE 100 business, and Executive Managing Director of a French CAC 40 business.

Nottingham University Business School is one of an elite global group of EQUIS-accredited business schools and is among the UK’s leading centres for management education. The school ranks in both The Economist MBA Top 100 2014

and The Economist Executive MBA 2013, where we rank 40th

globally and 6th in the UK.

We are recognised as one of the top schools in the world for the quality of our teaching and research in finance, entrepreneurship, and sustainability. We take seriously our responsibility to educate future business leaders to take a broader ethical and societal perspective on business practices and finance and we integrate these issues across our MBA programmes.

We continue to pioneer entrepreneurship education, as we believe it is vital to equip our MBAs with enhanced creativity and effective problem solving abilities. The school is a focus of entrepreneurial activity that unites numerous external organisations in collaborative teaching, research, and thought leadership globally.

Our faculty’s strong links with a large number of key businesses mean you will benefit from their business experience as well as the innovative research at our leading centres and institutes, from promoting entrepreneurial start-up businesses to developing supply chain solutions with Rolls-Royce.

Our goals are to inspire and challenge you intellectually and prepare you for success. Thank you for considering us at this key point in your personal and professional development.

The Nottingham MBA:

Our proposal

(5)

Create your own authentic leadership identity

We believe that everyone can develop and improve their abilities to perform as leaders, so the Nottingham MBA enables you to build your personal, team, and organisational leadership skills in several ways. You will learn to improve your capacity to manage complexity and contribute to the global challenge of developing more sustainable organisations, while discovering your own leadership style.

Business leaders thrive on their personal, team, and organisational leadership skills. We will give you the capacity to deal with complex and changing organisations, encourage you to think and operate internationally, and support you in creating your own authentic and effective leadership identity.

Team leadership

Managing teams is a critical element of leadership. Our Leadership Challenge is a practical focus on your interpersonal skills, your ability to generate and evaluate innovative ideas in a team context, and your ability to positively influence the performance of individuals and teams.

We also look at delegation and team management – how to delegate and support team members while developing their capabilities – as well as the ability to select the right priorities and purge low priority work to ensure staff focus on what matters.

Leadership and Change Management

Leaders must manage change. Starting a business requires innovation and entrepreneurship. Expanding it will draw on your systems, structure and control skills. This module focuses on the idea of authentic leadership, which develops your values, strengths, and skills in the context of how you acquired them and how your previous experiences have shaped them. You will also explore the idea of leader as teacher, and how better leaders focus on developing their people.

Thought leadership

Our academic experts are not only thought leaders across finance, management, entrepreneurship, and organisational issues but many also have extensive senior level experience of leadership in major organisations, and will help shape your skills through their experience and knowledge.

Business Leaders Series

Our exclusive series of guest lectures from top business leaders who come to the school have included Willie Walsh, Chief Executive, International Airlines Group; Sir Paul Smith, Designer and Chair, Paul Smith Ltd.; Mark Ovenden, Managing Director, Ford of Britain; Judith Nelson, UK Personnel Director, Tesco, and Korneel Coster, Director of Safety & Operations, Virgin Atlantic.

These events provide our MBAs with unique opportunities to hear from some of the world’s best business practitioners and to network with alumni and visitors from business and industry.

Develop your

(6)
(7)

Encourage innovation

and enterprise

Give your thinking a creative edge

The importance of entrepreneurship and innovation, not least in sustaining economic growth, is earning ever-wider recognition. Our aim is to develop your entrepreneurial skills to meet the demands of dynamic employers.

Entrepreneurship education is among Nottingham’s foremost established strengths and practising entrepreneurs are extensively involved in the MBA programme.

Our Entrepreneurship and Creativity module integrates lectures and creativity workshops with extensive participation from practising entrepreneurs who contribute their advice and experience to the programme.

During the module, you will engage with the Ingenuity model, a unique process for encouraging creative problem solving developed by academic staff and the Business School’s Haydn Green Institute for Innovation & Entrepreneurship. In teams, you will work through the creative problem solving process, developing your business idea and then pitching for investment.

The Enterpriselab

If you have a business idea, we will support you. Networking and raising funds are key to start-up success, and we will place you in simulated entrepreneurial environments, which provide the best platform for entrepreneurial learning. Nottingham offers a particularly dynamic laboratory facility for business start-ups, the Enterpriselab, which provides serviced offices and expert advice to entrepreneurs. Through this facility, the academic staff develop access to a network of organisations and local entrepreneurs who they assist with advice and contacts particularly in the raising of funds. These connections are fully exploited in the teaching of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship, which is a core feature of the MBA.

Our dynamic Enterpriselab provides serviced offices and expert advice to entrepreneurs.

MBA study tour to China

A fantastic opportunity to take advantage of Nottingham’s unique connections with China. We take seven MBA students to China for a week in June to learn about the essentials of doing business in China.

• visit the Nordic Industrial Park in Ningbo city – one of the first wholly foreign-owned and operated industrial and business parks in China

• learn about logistics on a visit to the Bei Lun Deep Water Port - China’s largest deep water port

• tour Beijing and visit SAB Miller

• visit Arup Associates – a leading global architecture and engineering firm involved with iconic building projects in China including the Birds Nest Stadium in Beijing • tour Shanghai and visit AstraZeneca’s headquarters • tour the Great Wall at Mutianyu

• meet members of the Chinese Government

MBA study tour to South America

In June, we run a joint study tour to Chile and Argentina with Lehigh University MBA students, which provides an opportunity to attend company visits, roundtables and networking opportunities with leading business executives in Latin America, complemented with a range of cultural activities in one of the world’s fastest growing business and tourist destinations.

Companies we visit have included:

• vineyard tour and discussion with company owners of Vina Matetric

• US Commercial Services

• AmChem – investment facilitator to promote free trade between the US and Chile

• Bayer - a global enterprise with core competencies in health care, agriculture and high-tech materials

MBA study tour to Silicon Valley

In January, we offer a number of places to our students to visit California’s Silicon Valley, focusing on new venture creation. Unique among university entrepreneurship programmes, we run this tour in partnership with Lehigh University.

The tour includes:

• live cases, focusing on the new breed of high performance, venture capital-backed companies. In various stages of evolution, each company uses breakthrough technology to transform a market.

• visits to companies that are innovators in medical devices, audio technology, web and data security, industrial design, information technology, data storage and management. • meetings with entrepreneurs, inventors, CEOs, venture

capitalists, and others who play key roles in building new enterprises from start-up to expansion and exit stage.

A number of MBA students will get the opportunity to take a study tour to China.

Develop your business acumen

Making long-term decisions and recognising the broader societal and environmental impacts of those decisions are key challenges for any business. Our Sustainable Decisions and Organisation module provides an integrated foundation challenge for Nottingham MBA students.

Senior business figures, practitioners, and research academics all contribute to this module, which is compulsory for all MBA students.

The module puts you in the role of a management team which must develop an economically and environmentally sustainable strategic solution to a major case study of a declining retail activity.

Once you have developed a strategy, a series of crises that threaten the operation and reputation of the business are presented. In teams, you must manage a press conference with well-known journalists and present your sustainable strategic solution to a board drawn from senior directors of major businesses.

Your say

“If you have ever wondered what it would

feel like to create an organisation that can

be leading edge today while preserving

opportunities for the future, this module

offers a realistic shot at that. The module

puts you in the position of a future business

leader, faced with real dangers in the

environment of a global business.”

Tanya Anand MBA in CSR McKinsey & Company

Business Practice Week

In semester one, our full-time MBA students have an opportunity to attend company visits in Nottingham and London to learn more about the current challenges businesses are facing. This is a fantastic opportunity to relate contemporary business issues to the core modules you take in the first semester.

• visit Boots – international leaders in healthcare and inventors of Ibuprofen

• learn about Capital One – innovators in the way that the credit card market works

• tour the Co-operative distribution centre to learn about operations management and supply logistics

• visit BioCity, the largest bioscience incubator in Europe and an international hub for entrepreneurial activity in the life sciences

• visit the Apple Retail Store and offices in London to meet marketing, sales and finance senior staff involved with new product launches such as the Apple watch

• meet members of Boldrocket, part of Capco, the global business and technology consultancy

• visit TransferWise, a peer-to-peer money transfer service, listed as number 12 in Startups.co.uk’s list of the top 100 UK start-ups of 2012.

Management Project

To enhance your employability you must show that you can put theory into practice. This module will test this ability, developing your potential and focusing your MBA on your career goals.

We encourage you to spend three months working in an organisation on an actual business issue that you choose. Many organisations use projects to assess the potential of new employees.

The Nottingham MBA offers opportunities for full-time course members to apply for a number of competitive management projects in the UK and overseas. We work in partnership with leading multinational companies such as Astra Zeneca, Tata Consultancy Services, Orange Business Service, Alliance Boots, Standard Chartered Bank, Rolls-Royce, Pfizer, Experian, Capital One, GE Healthcare, Ikano, Nexor, Balfour Beatty, and E.ON, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises, financial services, not-for-profit organisations, and creative industries.

business in the UK.

Praised for its innovative architecture and

environmentally friendly technology, it was

opened in 1999 by Her Majesty the Queen.

Jubilee Campus has been praised for its innovative architecture.

Jubilee

(16)

Nottingham is regarded as one of the UK’s

most desirable places to study. Home to

a world-class University, it is a culturally

diverse and vibrant city with a strong

sense of community.

City life

Old Market Square in Nottingham city centre hosts a number of events throughout the year.

(17)

Both Jubilee Campus and University Park Campus are close to the centre of Nottingham, one of the UK’s most cosmopolitan and prosperous cities. As the commercial and cultural capital of the East Midlands, Nottingham is home to several major UK employers, including Alliance Boots, Capital One, E.ON, Experian, and the Inland Revenue. Many large blue-chip companies have offices in and around the city. The school has strong links with Rolls-Royce, the global aero-engine manufacturer, based about 18 miles away in Derby.

The bustling city centre is renowned for its excellent nightlife, with more than 300 bars and pubs, as well as a variety of art galleries, restaurants, clubs, theatres, concert halls, and cinemas. Shopping in Nottingham has been voted among the best outside of London and the city has more sports facilities per head of population than anywhere else in Europe. Nottingham is one of the oldest cities in the UK and has a rich history. Explore the ancient caves beneath Nottingham Castle, or take a relaxing walk through Wollaton Park and visit the imposing Elizabethan Hall.

As a break from the pace of city life, the region offers beautiful rural scenery in the Peak District National Park and historic buildings such as Newstead Abbey, Southwell Minster, and Hardwick Hall. Nottinghamshire’s more well-known attractions include Robin Hood’s Sherwood Forest and the historic Goose Fair, held every October.

Time to travel

Getting here is easy. Nottingham is less than two hours travel from London, with excellent transport links to the capital and the rest of the UK.

East Midlands Airport, one of the UK’s fastest growing airports, is only 40 minutes from the city centre via a 24-hour bus service.

Frequent rail services run from Nottingham to major UK cities, including London every 30 minutes, and the Eurostar connection at St Pancras International means that passengers are only a few hours train journey from Paris.

MBA Finance

The Finance specialism aims to produce managers and investors who can understand and make successful use of the financial system. The introductory Finance and Accounting module ensures an understanding of company accounts and the underlying principles of all financial decision making. In the second semester, Corporate Finance, International Finance, Financial & Monetary Economics and Portfolio Management & Investment Analysis can be combined in a variety of ways to provide the best foundation for any of the many types of finance career available.

Inevitably modules have a technical component; you can’t be good at finance without an understanding of risk for example. However, the aim of the Finance specialism is to produce managers of technical experts who are not necessarily technical experts themselves. The ability to ask the right questions and understand the answers marks out the good financial manager, not the ability to solve complex mathematical equations.

All modules also have an ethical dimension; financial management and investment problems are never simply technical problems. Consider the widespread mis-selling of interest rate swaps to business customers by banks. This could only have thrived in organisations without much sense of the “right” way to do business.

The MBA Finance reflects the school’s research strengths and connections in finance and financial services. If you want to concentrate on this area, the programme offers an impressive choice of elective modules that allow greater emphasis on the financial aspects of management.

We also offer the full-time and part-time MBA Finance at our campus in Malaysia. Turn to page 37 for contact details.

Executive

MBA

Nottingham University Business School’s Executive MBA offers you an advanced management education programme that matches the needs of developing executives.

The programme is designed for managers who want to continue their careers while studying for an MBA at their own pace. Our Executive programme aims to develop your competence to generate value, improve organisational effectiveness, and enhance your ability to work with others to achieve successful change.

The Executive MBA will give you a general management perspective on the functions of a business and how they can be integrated with a rapidly changing environment, together with a sound up-to-date knowledge and understanding of the operations of a business enterprise and of the practical skills you need to manage them. Our Executive MBA course members typically have at least five years of management experience while the average is more than 10 years. Our Executive MBAs come from around the world, including Europe, the Far East, Africa, Australasia, and the UK. You will study alongside participants from private, public, and not-for-profit organisations, offering a breadth of experience, fresh perspectives on business issues, and exceptional networking opportunities. Nottingham’s ideal location and excellent transportation links allow managers located anywhere in the UK or overseas to participate.

Because we appreciate that you need to plan your MBA carefully to fit in with your work and other commitments, the programme is designed for maximum flexibility, allowing you to accommodate your studies into your lifestyle. You can vary the number of modules you take each year according to your commitments.

The benefits for sponsoring organisations

Many organisations pay all or some of the fees for their employees to study the Nottingham MBA, and some choose to send new employees year after year. The reason is simple: a clear and immediate return on investment.

We can work with you to customise the programme in several ways.

• we encourage our Executive MBAs to use their real life business experience as much as possible in their classes and assignments and our flexible programme enables them to pace their studies to match the needs of your organisation. • your managers are professionals and just as you are

supporting them, we will support you to customise an Executive MBA programme to benefit your business. • our elective modules can be matched to your development

needs or current responsibilities.

• the Management Project can deal with a real issue in your organisation with the potential to create value for your business.

• coursework frequently enables your managers to look at issues from the perspective of your organisation. • with a range of MBA programmes in Asia, your managers

could take some modules overseas, providing beneficial international experience.

• as a sponsoring organisation, you also have access to the expertise and services of an international university. You can receive invitations to our business events including our high profile Business Leaders Series talks, and get access to our other business services, such as internship, graduate recruitment, and executive education opportunities.

Course structure

The Executive MBA consists of 12 modules and a management project.

Modules normally run during one week and the school runs modules regularly during the year to allow you the flexibility to join the programme at various times.

In addition to modules we offer at our UK campus, you can choose to study modules that run as part of our programmes in Malaysia or Singapore.

You will take seven core modules plus five elective modules. You can also choose to study a specific module over a semester with our full-time MBAs, attending lectures and possibly group meetings for a few hours each week over the course of 15 weeks.

Specialist programmes

To achieve the Executive MBA CSR, Executive MBA Entrepreneurship, or Executive MBA Healthcare, course members must take:

• eight core modules

• two specialist core modules relevant to the named programme

• two elective modules

• a management project that focuses on the specialist area We offer partial Executive MBA bursaries for participants employed in the UK, EU or overseas public sector or not-for-profit organisations.

Postgraduate Diploma in Business

Administration route

If you have considerable managerial experience but do not have a first degree or a professional qualification, the school provides a way for you to join the Nottingham MBA. The Postgraduate Diploma route allows participants who are successful in at least four of their first six modules to transfer onto the MBA and complete the programme.

Many of our MBAs have completed the programme in this way and continued on to successful careers.

Work experience

For the full-time MBA programme, you will usually be expected to have at least three years of full-time work experience that includes a management dimension, the majority of which will have been gained since graduating from your first degree. References

Two references should be enclosed with your application, or arrange for the referees to send references directly to our MBA office. We prefer one reference from an academic (e.g. your previous university) or training source (e.g. your company training or personnel officer) and the second reference from an employer or business contact.

If your first language is not English and you do not have a degree from a UK institution, we require evidence of your competence in English. We will normally require one of the following combinations of test results for an immediate entry to the MBA Programme.

Either:

• an IELTS score (Academic version) of at least 7.0 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each of the four elements of the test. • Or the academic Pearson Test of English, a score of 68

(minimum of 55).

Together with a Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) of at least 640 with an Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) score of at least 5.0.

IELTS is administered through British Council offices in many countries. For information about your local test centre, contact the British Council in your own country. Please note that you should apply to do the ‘Academic’ version of the test. Find out more:
