Switch disconnector fuse unit, Type 3KL and
Switch disconnector unit, Type 3KA
Application
Siemens pioneered the AC23A concept, now widely demanded by customers/consultants alike. 3KL/ 3KA unit are suitable for diverse applications of switching ranging from no-load conditions to
stringent conditions e.g. switching highly inductive loads. They can be used for mixed resistive, inductive loads, capacitor banks and both in AC & DC circuits. Special execution for corrosive atmosphere are also available.
Standards
The Switch disconnector fuse and Switch disconnector conform to IEC 947-3 and IS 13947-3.
Note:
Switch disconnector fuse units (SDF) were earlier called fuse switch units.

3KA : Switch Disconnector Unit
Open 63A, 125A, 250A, 400A, 630A, 1000A, 1600A
Benefits
a) Wide rangeSingle source for, SDFs, open upto 800 A SDFs, in SS enclosure upto 630 A
SDs, open upto 1600 A b) No movement of fuses
Prevents loosening of fuses; hence reliable short circuit protection.
c) Suitable for knife blade fuses Reduced down time for fuse inspection/replacement. d) Double break feature*
Isolates the fuses at both the ends. Thus total protection to operating personnel.
e) Wide service temperature range -20°C to 55°C Siemens SDFs require no derating even upto service temp of +55°C. e.g. in a distribution feeder with a load current of 375A, you may use 3KL unit rated 400A.
If one uses an unit of other make (which needs to be derated at 55°C, say by 15%), it can be used only upto 340A. Thus a 630A unit of that make may be necessary for same application. This means approx. 40% increase in cost for this particular example.
f) Maintenance free Very high mechanical life coupled with an equally high
electrical life eliminates any need for contact replacement. g) Positive isolation
All 3KL/3KA satisfy the isolation requirements of IEC 947 / IS 13947 standards. This provides greater safety to operating personnel.
h) Positive indication of contact separation
Siemens SDFs come with built in POSITIVE OFF indicator. For the purpose of identifying the ON/OFF state of the unit reliably, for obvious reasons, the handle on the door is normally not preferred by maintenance personnel / consultants. In makes without a
POSITIVE OFF indicator, an auxiliary switch plus lamp would be required,
amounting to approx. Rs. 300 for 125A SDF. Thus in a typical 125A unit of non-Siemens make one has to reckon with an extra cost of approx. 10%.
Of course, the combination of auxiliary switch plus pilot lamp is still not as positive as an unit with built in POSITIVE OFF indicator.
i) Adjustable drive shaft, to suit panel depth
Siemens SDFs come with a telescopic shaft which allows the panel builder to readily use it for varying panel depth. In the case of other makes, the non-availability of a telescopic shaft makes the
1. Switch disconnector fuse unit. 2. Fuse-monitor
unit inflexible. Hence the panel builder has to fabricate an additional bracket to adapt unit to his panel depth. Thereby increasing labour time & cost e.g. approx. Rs. 50 for 125A unit.
j) Front Drive
Front drive incorporates door interlock with defeat facility, and padlocking as a standard. k) Neutral Link
Every SDF/SD is provided with a neutral link. Its terminals are suitable for accommodating neutral conductors of half the cross-section as those of the maximum permissible main cables.
l) Phase barriers as standard Provides greater safety. m) Fuse monitoring provision
All 3KL units have tapped holes on lyra contacts to allow monitoring of fuse state using Siemens fuse-monitor type 3VU1300-MS00.
n) Suitable for AC loads, DC loads, capacitor application.
o) Mounting at 90o in the vertical plane possible.
p) Completely type tested at CPRI/ERDA.

Contact System
The heart of Siemens SDF unit type 3KL is the unique moving contact system (see illustration) comprising multiple silver plated copper rollers which are spring loaded, free to rotate around their axis and firmly anchored.
The spring loading is so designed that the contact friction is minimised and rollers rotate to avoid any tendency of locking or welding. Fixed contacts are knife blade type. Hence self cleaning feature is assured.
Advantages of the Contact System
• High short circuit making and withstand capacity.
Due to the multiple roller design, each roller carries only a fraction of the total current. This leads to reduction of
electrodynamic repelling forces when the switch is in ‘ON’ position. e.g., in 3KL61, there are eight rollers at each break and each roller carries 1/8th of the total current. When the switch is ‘ON’, the forces in each phase are reduced to 1/64 of original.
The above feature along with the high closing speed of the unit results in high making capacity. At the same time, when the contacts are closed, based on the principle of increase in attraction due to electrodynamic
force between parallel current paths, the opening of contacts under high short circuits [80kA (rms)] is prevented, thus leading to high short circuit withstand capacity.
• High breaking capacity The high breaking capacity corresponding to AC23A utilization category at 550V, is mainly achieved by current sharing in multiple rollers per phase.
• Long electrical life Division of current loading explained earlier leads to reduction in arcing time and hence lesser erosion of contacts thus giving long electrical life.
• Long mechanical life
Lower operating torque, hence longer mechanical life.
Switch disconnector unit type 3KA
Heavy duty TPN, double break switch disconnectors, type 3KA are also available. The principle of construction is similar to 3KL and, therefore, they have the same high performance.
