* Introduction (1)

The interpretations of the nakshatras that are given below are modern renditions of the ancient Vedic system of interpreting. Much of the ancient astrological i nterpretations are written in a fatalistic language that most contemporary weste rn astrologers believe needs to be updated to a more modern and psychologically oriented language. The interpretations given below are a slightly more modern an d psychological version of the ancient interpretations of the nakshatras, and st ill include much of the original Vedic ideas on how the nakshatra influences you .

Nakshatras are also known as lunar mansions. There are 27 nakshatras, and each o ne has a length of 13 degrees and 20 minutes.@

* Moon in 1st Nakshatra (2)

The Moon is in Ashvini, the first nakshatra (0 degrees to 13 deg 20 min of Aries ). You are probably fond of ornaments and have an attractive appearance. Most li kely you are liked by all, clever, and intelligent.@

* Moon in 2nd Nakshatra (3)

The Moon is in Bharani, the second nakshatra (13 deg 20 min to 26 deg 40 min of Aries). You carry out your purposes to the end, and are truthful and clever. You tend to be happy and healthy.@

* Moon in 3rd Nakshatra (4)

The Moon is in Krithika, the third nakshatra (26 deg 40 min of Aries to 10 deg o f Taurus). Most likely you are a heavy eater, fond of the society of matrons, an d others may have suspicions about your moral conduct. You are brilliant and may be famous.@

* Moon in 4th Nakshatra (5)

The Moon is in Rohini, the fourth nakshatra (10 degrees to 23 deg 20 min of Taur us). Most likely you have a pleasing demeanor and disposition and are generally regarded as being truthful, pure, sweet-tempered, well-spoken, with a settled mi nd and lovely appearance.@

The Moon is in Mrigasirsha, the fifth nakshatra (23 deg 20 min of Taurus to 6 de g 40 min of Gemini). You are fickle, sharp-witted, timid, eloquent, industrious, and sensual. You have the capacity to become very wealthy.@

The Moon is in Ardra, the sixth nakshatra (6 deg 40 min to 20 deg of Gemini). Yo u are mischievous and do not always play by the rules. Others may even feel that you are perfidious, haughty, ungrateful, or sinful.@

The Moon is in Punarvasu, the seventh nakshatra (20 degrees of Gemini to 3 deg 2 0 min of Cancer). You are amiable and undemanding, happy with the simple pleasur es of life, and fond of food and drink. You may be too passive, others may find you unexciting, and lack of drive can make you more susceptible to illness.@ * Moon in 8th Nakshatra (9)

The Moon is in Pushya, the eighth nakshatra (3 deg 20 min to 16 deg 40 min of Ca ncer). You have great self-discipline, self-control, and have a composed mind. Y ou are industrious, enjoy learning, tend to be well liked and highly regarded, a nd you have the capacity to be successful and wealthy.@

The Moon is in Aslesha, the ninth nakshatra (16 deg 40 min of Cancer to 0 degree s of Leo). You are clever and know how to manipulate situations to advantage, bu t others may feel you are insincere or deceitful. Avoid being selfish because yo ur style of doing things makes you an easy target for being labeled selfish and ungrateful.@

The Moon is in Magha, the tenth nakshatra (0 degrees to 13 deg 20 min of Leo). Y ou have an industrious and positive attitude and you respect tradition, so conse quently you are likely to become successful and prosperous.@

The Moon is in Purva Phalguni, the eleventh nakshatra (13 deg 20 min to 26 deg 4 0 min of Leo). You enjoy traveling, are loyal, generous, and have an optimistic attitude and pleasant demeanor.@

The Moon is in Uthara Phalguni, the twelfth nakshatra (26 deg 40 min of Leo to 1 0 degrees of Virgo). You are inclined to a well-balanced life, taking time to so cialize and enjoy yourself, as well as develop your talents and abilities so tha t you can succeed in your career as well.@

The Moon is in Hasta, the thirteenth nakshatra (10 degrees to 23 deg 20 min of V irgo). You are industrious and ambitious, sometimes impatient, and inclined at t imes to be overly aggressive and overly competitive, and perhaps selfish. You ca n push yourself to excess, drinking too much or going to extremes in other ways. @

The Moon is in Chitra, the fourteenth nakshatra (23 deg 20 min of Virgo to 6 deg 40 min of Libra). You appreciate beauty, and it is likely that you dress nicely , bring flowers and plants into your home, and make your surroundings very attra ctive.@

The Moon is in Svathi, the fifteenth nakshatra (6 deg 40 min to 20 degrees of Li bra). You are modest and compassionate. Your good-hearted nature and kindness to others protects you from harm. You also have a good intuition and imagination f or business activities.@

The Moon is in Vishukha, the sixteenth nakshatra (20 degrees of Libra to 3 deg 2 0 min of Scorpio). You like to be first, are very competitive, and are inclined to become envious, covetous, and quarrelsome if you feel unlucky or unappreciate

The Moon is in Anuradha, the seventeenth nakshatra (3 deg 20 min to 16 deg 40 mi n of Scorpio). You love to travel and explore, and you may find it difficult to settle down in one place, or make long-term commitments. You have expensive tast es, appreciate items of high quality, and you are unwilling to go without the co mforts that you are accustomed to, even for a short period of time.@

The Moon is in Jyeshta, the eighteenth nakshatra (16 deg 40 min of Scorpio to 0 degrees of Sagittarius). You are a loner and content to follow your interests, w ithout interference from others. You become very irritable when others distract or annoy you.@

The Moon is in Mula, the nineteenth nakshatra (0 degrees to 13 deg 20 min of Sag ittarius). You enjoy material comforts, are ambitious, and very likely to achiev e a very high level of success, with a very comfortable home, expensive car, and considerable assets. Your clear sense of values and ethics, and the pride you t ake in your work also help you succeed. You are pleasant and gentle with others. @

The Moon is in Purva Ashadha, the twentieth nakshatra (13 deg 20 min to 26 deg 4 0 min of Sagittarius). You give a great deal of attention to your friends and lo ved ones, are careful in picking friends, and it is very likely that your marria ge is a happy one.@

The Moon is in Uthara Ashadha, the twenty-first nakshatra (26 deg 40 min of Sagi ttarius to 10 degrees of Capricorn). The Moon is in Sravishta, the twenty-third nakshatra (23 deg 20 min of Capricorn to 6 deg 40 min of Aquarius). You also some times disregard the feelings or interests of others in your avid pursuit of the things that interest you.@

The Moon is in Shatabhisha, the twenty-fourth nakshatra (6 deg 40 min to 20 degr ees of Aquarius). You are courageous, daring, stubborn, and self-reliant. You ar e direct, honest, and truthful, and have a distaste for people who are evasive. You are competitive and like to come out on top, and most often you do. Your hon esty, forthrightness, and competitive spirit sometimes arouse antagonism from ot hers, and consequently you may have a good number of enemies.@

The Moon is in Purva Bhadrapada, the twenty-fifth nakshatra (20 degrees of Aquar ius to 3 deg 20 min of Pisces). You are clever and you know how to manipulate si tuations to your advantage. Very likely you are successful, but a tendency to be overly concerned about your own well-being and security and insensitive to othe rs can result in relationship problems. For example, your spouse may be constant ly criticizing you.@

The Moon is in Uthara Bhadrapada, the twenty-sixth nakshatra (3 deg 20 min to 16 deg 40 min of Pisces). You have great intelligence and wit, and are able to suc ceed in life, overcome obstacles, and circumvent potential problems with your cl ever ideas. You also have a strong sense of values that guides your life, and yo u are likely to be content, and have a happy, busy family life with your spouse, children and relatives.@

The Moon is in Revathi, the twenty-seventh nakshatra (16 deg 40 min of Pisces to 0 degrees of Aries). You maintain a well-balanced life style, taking sufficient time to enjoy various activities. You are likely to be physically fit and have a very positive attitude. You are well-organized and you take good care of the t hings you own and your own physical health as well. You are liked by all and hav e many friends.@

* Sun Dasa, Sun Bhukti (29)

If the Sun is well-situated, this period promotes progress in education, advance ment in position or authority, and brings recognition from superiors or the Gove rnment. It indicates a time of good health, increase of wealth, and enjoyment of comforts and luxuries, providing that the Sun in the natal horoscope has some b earing upon wealth or comfort by association with the 2nd or 4th houses.

If on the contrary, Sun is debilitated, in its fall, or the rasi of an Enemy (Na tural or Compound Enemy), or occupies the 6th, 8th or 12th house, or rules one o f these houses, there is likelihood of trouble with relatives, difficulties with superiors, loss of power and wealth, either by death or through the father. The re may be loss of patrimony or of actual support from the father. The magnitude of the evils depends upon the degree of affliction to the Sun.@

* Sun Dasa, Moon Bhukti (30)

When there is a good relationship in the horoscope between Sun and Moon, and the Moon is well-situated in an angle or the 5th or 9th house, or if the Moon occup ies the rising rasi, this period may denote marriage if the native is of proper age. If already married, it denotes the possibility of birth of a child, happine ss from children and the marriage partner, as well as increase of property and w ealth. It is often marked by fortunate opportunity to purchase houses, lands, or items of personal adornment. Frequently this period indicates pleasant journeys or voyages overseas, or the achievement of some office or desirable employment.

If Moon is afflicted, waning, or combust the Sun, illness in the family, public disgrace, quarrels with superiors and/or loss of wealth, property or position is probable. Servants and those in the employ of the native often prove unreliable or causes of trouble. These evils are aggravated if the Sun is also weak. When the Moon is located in the 6th, 8th or 12th house there is possibility of drowni ng, unreasonable fears and worries which can lead to melancholia and possible su icide.@

* Sun Dasa, Mars Bhukti (31)

If Mars is exalted, occupies an angle or the 5th or 9th house, there can be incr ease in wealth and property with general prosperity. It is a time of courageous action, powerful positions, and a firmness of mind which brings about success in projects of an executive nature, especially when engineering, military or other Martian occupations are involved. When Mars receives a powerful aspect from the ruler of either the 9th or 10th house, it brings a time of attainment of some d esired office, and a likelihood of much traveling.

If Mars is not well-situated in the horoscope, this period brings quarrels with both superiors and friends, as well as inferiors. Mental attitudes tend to chang e rapidly, with a considerable compulsion to engage in wicked deeds which might lead to imprisonment. If Mars is in either the 2nd or 7th house, the health suff ers from acute fevers, infections, or accidents from fire, sharp instruments or machinery. The tendency to become overly excited in anger can bring about heart seizures, apoplexy, or injury from other persons.@

* Sun Dasa, Jupiter Bhukti (32)

If Jupiter is exalted in the horoscope, or occupies an angle, or the 5th, 9th or llth house, this bhukti denotes a favorable time for education or educational w ork, especially in philosophy, science, religion, law, or related professional o ccupations. In ordinary affairs, it brings opportunity for marriage, or the birt h of a child, and inclines superiors or those in authority to bestow favors of a material nature. In general, the prosperity will not only be maintained but inc reased.

Should Jupiter be poorly situated in the horoscope, this bhukti brings troubles from various sources which manifest through the family. For a married woman, it brings difficulties in the affairs of the husband; to the single woman it brings difficulty in employment or broken promises from suitors. It is a time characte rized by hypocrisy, either of the native or those close to him, and creates trou ble by prompting persons to make promises which they cannot keep or which they d o not wish to keep. Cheating others under the guise of piety, religion, or impro per application of the law, often accompanies this bhukti when Jupiter is weak.@ * Sun Dasa, Mercury Bhukti (33)

When Mercury is exalted, in an angle or the 5th, 9th or llth house, this bhukti brings the respect of educated and intelligent persons. Speech is powerful and p ersuasive, filled with wit, humor, vivacity and similar ingredients which make f or success in Mercurial pursuits.

When Mercury is poorly situated in the horoscope and is located in a dusthana ho use, this bhukti brings much wandering both of the mind and the physical body, w ith little profit. The speech is apt to be slow, ill-tempered or boring. There i s danger from indiscreet talk or from inability to speak frankly or truthfully. If Mercury is in the 2nd or 7th house of the natal chart, this bhukti brings tro uble with the wife and children, accidents due to haste or lack of foresight, an d illness to the organs of speech.@

* Sun Dasa, Ketu or Rahu Bhukti (34)

These have been discussed in a separate section. However, the Nodes are enemies of the luminaries and when in the dasas of either Sun or Moon, the Ketu or Rahu bhuktis would not be favorable periods. Likewise, in the dasas of Ketu or Rahu, the bhuktis of Sun and Moon would not be good periods. The bhuktis of Rahu and K etu are most favorable in the Mercury, Jupiter and Venus dasas.@

* Sun Dasa, Saturn Bhukti (35)

When Saturn is fortunately situated, this bhukti brings happiness, moderate pros perity, and is helpful in marriage or in contracting a happy marriage. If Saturn is exalted or otherwise situated in an outstanding manner, it brings additional wealth, honor, authority, or leadership in one's community. It is generally a t ime of sober application of talent, energy and thought.

When Saturn is afflicted, or is in the 6th, 8th or 12th rasi from the Sun, it br ings about troubles with the family, estrangement or separation from loved ones, and the possibility of imprisonment or long hospitalization. All affairs suffer under this bhukti; it can mark the time of death of the parents, or if Saturn i s in the 2nd or 7th, accident or death to the native. Diseases of the body which are brought about by poor circulation, faulty elimination or calcification are common to this bhukti.@

* Sun Dasa, Venus Bhukti (36)

Venus well-placed in the horoscope, or in the rasi Cancer, marks a good time to choose a marriage partner, especially for a man to choose a wife. For women, it indicates a time of amicable relationships with other women and a period of much pleasure. The luxuries of fine living attract the interest, and opportunities f or enjoying them are plentiful. It generally favors prosperity and pleasurable p ursuits.

If Venus is in a dusthana house it can bring Vimshottari Dasas the displeasure o f superiors, anxiety in marriage, and illicit love affairs. So afflicted, Venus bhukti can bring loss of the wife or husband and/or children. If it is also asso ciated with the ruler of the 7th house, while being a dusthana planet, it brings danger of mental disease, losses through sloth, self-indulgence or ill-founded generosity. When Venus is afflicted and conjunct ruler of the 8th or 12th house, it may indicate danger of accidental death.@

* Moon Dasa, Moon Bhukti (37)

When Moon is well-placed and associated with the rulers of the 9th and/or 10th h ouse, this bhukti denotes opportunity for marriage, or if married, the birth of a child. It gives increase of wealth, happiness and general prosperity, as well as realization of wishes, and honor from the public or Government.

When Moon is afflicted this bhukti indicates a sudden loss of wealth or occupati on, mental anguish and illness, or troubles through the mother. Moon in the 2nd or 7th house and afflicted indicates disappointments in the career, inability to achieve success due to sloth or lack of public support, and the possibility of death by drowning or suffocation.@

* Moon Dasa, Mars Bhukti (38)

If Mars is well-situated this bhukti brings increase of wealth, honors and happi ness. However, if Mars is badly situated or occupies a dusthana house, there is danger of litigation, destruction of wealth and property, and loss of health fro

m blood diseases. It may indicate accidents or surgical operations. When Mars oc cupies the 2nd or 7th house, or if the rasi dispositor of Mars is located in the 7th rasi from the Moon, the mind becomes agitated, the speech is vituperative a nd rash, and the actions are aggressive, overbearing and imperious. Such behavio r creates antagonism in superiors and partners, with resulting losses through su ch persons.@

* Moon Dasa, Jupiter Bhukti (39)

When Jupiter is well-situated this period is accompanied by an increase of prope rty, comfort and prosperity. It favors marriage or birth of a child and possible benefits from the Government.

When Jupiter is debilitated, this bhukti may bring the death of the father or of a son. There is apt to be demotion, dismissal, or deportation during this perio d, which warns against impetuous or grandiose projects and travel to foreign lan ds. Jupiter in the 2nd or 7th, or conjunct the rulers of these houses, brings il l health; both the liver and the heart may be involved.@

* Moon Dasa, Saturn Bhukti (40)

When Saturn is favorably situated, this bhukti brings an increase in the family as well as general material well-being. It is also considered a good time in whi ch to start a new business.

If Saturn is not favorably situated, or in the 2nd, 6th, 8th or 12th house, ther e is possible dishonor or slander and loss of prestige. Physically it can bring the loss of a limb, surgery, and the possibility of falls, suffocation or injury from falling objects.@

* Moon Dasa, Mercury Bhukti (41)

When Mercury is well-situated, especially in the 5th, 9th or llth house, it can mean an increase in wealth. The intellect is sharpened, leading to an increase i n knowledge. In this instance Mercury acts as a rational influence and may bring about the cessation of disputes, as well as solutions to problems of business a nd trade. Such awareness and insight may lead to recognition by superiors or ass ociates, with subsequent rewards and contentments.

When Mercury is unfavorably situated, this bhukti may bring losses of a material nature, especially in enterprises connected with animals. It is indicative of a time of loss of public favor, and may lead to imprisonment if Mercury is especi ally afflicted in the natal horoscope. Mercury in the 2nd or 7th often creates c onditions leading to illness during this bhukti.@

* Moon Dasa, Venus Bhukti (42)

When Venus is well-placed in the horoscope and conjunct the Moon or strongly asp ected by the Moon, this is a time of much pleasure and material well-being. Venu s operates to bring love and marriage into the life, or to intensify the awarene ss of love and entertainment of friends and family. Materially it denotes gain, and may possibly bring about the discovery of hidden treasure.

When Venus is weakly situated the reverse prevails, and particularly warns again st improper attachments to other persons. There is apt to be loss of reputation, scandal and public censure due to weakness of the love nature. Women prove to b e an annoyance and source of trouble. There is often separation from loved ones, either by travel or by illness; and wealth may be dissipated through inattentio n, neglect, or theft. If Venus is heavily afflicted or very weak, this period ca n bring accidental death.@

* Moon Dasa, Sun Bhukti (43)

When Sun is well-placed this is a time of prosperity, and can bring about recove ry of property or wealth previously lost. The native is popular, well-received b y superiors and loved by friends and family. It often indicates the birth of chi ldren.

When Sun is unfavorably placed, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th rasi from the Moon, i t may bring loss of reputation, quarrels with those in power, and subsequent los s of wealth. This bhukti carries the further possibility of loss through bandits , and injuries from serpents or insects. In the 2nd or 7th house, the Sun can br ing fevers and trouble with the lungs.@

* Mars Dasa, Mars Bhukti (44)

Mars well-placed gives birth to sons during this bhukti, and if Mars is conjunct the ruler of the Ascendant, it brings military advancement, success in trades a ssociated with Mars, and gain through an employer or by marriage. It is generall y a prosperous time.

If Mars is not well-situated in the chart, then this bhukti brings accidents fro m firearms, sharp instruments, or machinery. There is a possibility of loss or i njury through the Government, military forces, bandits or those of a Martian nat ure. Often this period indicates a time for surgery.@

* Mars Dasa, Jupiter Bhukti (45)

If Jupiter is well-situated and is the ruler of the 5th, 9th or llth house, or i s located in the 5th, 9th or llth rasi from either the Ascendant or Mars, this b hukti brings great honor and fame. It always indicates a time of general prosper ity and well-being.

When Jupiter is afflicted or weak in the natal horoscope, the reverse is indicat ed, and warns against undertaking projects which are not founded on solid ideas. The tendency is to become too expansive or to undertake more than one can handl e, with the resulting misfortune. Over-indulgence on any level can mean subseque nt physical illnesses, especially those involving the liver or digestive system. @

* Mars Dasa, Saturn Bhukti (46)

When Saturn is well-situated, this dasa-bhukti combination can be a period of su ccess through application of hard work and serious thought. It tends to bring in creases in the family, prosperity, and leadership in associations connected with trade.

When Saturn is not strong in the horoscope, or when it is located in the 5th, 9t h, or 11th rasi from Mars, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, it may bring unprof itable or disagreeable travels to foreign countries, dishonor or loss of wealth, dismissal or deportation. If Saturn is very afflicted and Mars is not favorably placed, this may bring a period of great moral weakness which could lead to hom icide, or some evil deed resulting in imprisonment. In the 2nd or 7th, Saturn ca n bring quarrels with loved ones, separations and possibility of accidental deat h.@

* Mars Dasa, Mercury Bhukti (47)

When Mercury is well-situated this is a favorable period, characterized by a rig hteous mode of life, obedience to the laws and rules of society which leads to r

espect and public authority. It inclines to spiritual interests but is also indi cative of material prosperity.

If Mercury is unfavorably situated this a period which threatens dishonor, loss of close relatives, wife or children. It may bring imprisonment if Mercury is in the same rasi as Mars. When Mercury is conjoined Saturn it causes malicious spe ech and emphasizes the cruel side of the personality, leading to quarrels and ge neral unpopularity. Should Mercury be located in the 2nd or 7th house there is p ossibility of serious illness.@

* Mars Dasa, Venus Bhukti (48)

When Venus is well-situated, conjunct or strongly aspected by the ruler of the A scendant, this period brings opportunity for marriage, birth of a child, gain fr om property and general prosperity. Venus inclines the interests to love, romanc e, personal enjoyments and happy associations with others.

When Venus is not well-situated the reverse is the case, and this period is mark ed by sorrows, loss of wealth, trouble through the marriage partner or children, and disappointment in the career or occupation. Should Venus be in the 2nd or 7 th house, there is a possibility of illness from physical excesses.@

* Mars Dasa, Sun Bhukti (49)

The Sun favorably situated denotes honor, fame, courage, prosperity in business, good health and increase of family. When the Sun is not favorably situated, thi s bhukti tends to bring mental anguish, physical injuries, loss of wealth or pos ition, and irritability with those closely associated with the native. If Sun is in the 2nd or 7th house there is a fear of accidents or trouble involving child ren.@

* Mars Dasa, Moon Bhukti (50)

Moon in Cancer or Taurus rasi, or in trine aspect or conjunction ruler of the 1s t, 4th, 9th or 10th house, brings opportunities for marriage and public success. It is generally a period of domestic tranquility, with fulfillment of reasonabl e desires.

When Moon is weak or in the 6th, 8th or 12th rasi from the Ascendant or Mars, th is period is liable to bring troubles to the women or children in the family, di sapproval from superiors, and loss of wealth. Should the Moon be waning and in t he 2nd or 7th house there is a possibility of serious illness or mental afflicti on and even sudden death.@

* Jupiter Dasa, Jupiter Bhukti (51)

If Jupiter is exalted or occupies an angle, or the 5th or 9th house, or is in th e rasi Sagittarius or Pisces, this bhukti will bring honor and respect from supe riors or the Government, increase of property, and promotion of charitable activ ities. It ushers in a period of opportunity for marriage or the birth of a child , and brings lavish living conditions in comparison to the usual mode of life. When Jupiter is unfavorably situated, it inclines the native to associations wit h persons of low or vulgar habits. The affairs are apt to suffer from neglect wh ich can bring loss of wealth. It is usually a time of separations from family, a nd may be a period in which the father or son dies. If Jupiter is in the 7th or conjoined the ruler of the 7th, this can be a period of serious illness.@

Mercury well-situated in the horoscope causes this period to be most favorable f or the acquisition of knowledge or the renewal of educational pursuits. Prosperi ty and family happiness are often achieved under this bhukti, and it can mark a time of recognition of a gifted child.

When Mercury is badly placed in the horoscope the reverse is true, and the perio d is characterized by general loss of material well-being and estrangement in fa mily relationships. It tends to make the speech sharp, the morals loose and the manner abrupt or unsociable. There may be travels under this aspect but they pro ve to be difficult or accompanied by illnesses, especially of the intestinal tra ct and the eyes.@

* Jupiter Dasa, Venus Bhukti (53)
