Introduction
This article is the result of some mails received by me from beginners asking for the calculation of Navamsa. Almost all Astrological software gives the position of Navamsa along with Rasi chart and there is no exception to it. Just to fulfill the aspirations of some of the young enthusiasts I am summarizing below the calculations involved in the preparation of Navamsa Chart.
Navamsa has two words - ‘Navam’ meaning nine and Amsa meaning division. So Navamsa translates into ‘Nine Division’. Parasara has described Navamsa in his Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra under the chapter on Divisional charts. It is the 1/9th division of a rasi. A rasi has 30 degrees and it has to be divided by 9 to get the Navamsa division. So each Navamsa will have 3° 20’. For the 12 rasis in the chart you get - 12 multiplied by 9 a total of 108 Navamsas. This is the basis of calculation of Navamsa.
Each Navamsa division is assigned a rasi and this is also explained by Maharishi Parasara as below:
नवाशेशाशरे तसमािसथरे तनवमािदतः।
उभये ततपंचमादेिरित िचनतयम् िवचकणौः।
देवा नृराकसाशैव चरािदषु गृहेषु च॥
(Require Sanskrit 2003 font to read the above sloka)
Meaning: The Navamsa calculations are – for a movable rasi from the rasi itself, for a fixed rasi from the 9th rasi from it and for a dual rasi from the 5th from it. Deva, Nara and Rakshasa are the designations given from movable rasi. (meaning a movable Navamsa will be Deva, a fixed Navamsa will be Nara or manushya and a Dual Navamsa will be a Rakshasa one- this means that starting from Aries it is deva and moving on to Taurus it is Nara and then the last one Gemini is Rakshasa and then the cycle repeats like Cancer – Deva etc.)
Here we are going to concentrate only on the calculation part of Navamsa and hence we shall not go into the details of the designations given to the Navamsa divisions as per line 3 of the sloka.I will be giving various methods of calculation.
Method 1:
Each rasi of 30° is divided by 9 and each division of 3° 20’ is assigned one Navamsa beginning from Aries. Since Aries is a movable sign the 1st Navamsa will be Aries followed by Taurus, Gemini… and will go upto Sagittarius which will be the 9th Navamsa. The next rasi is Taurus which is a fixed sign and hence it should start from the 9th itself as per sloka and the 9th rasi from Taurus is Capricorn which will be the 1st Navamsa of Taurus 3° 20’ and will continue till Virgo which will be the last Navamsa of Taurus. Next Gemini is a dual sign and the 1st Navamsa will begin from
the 5th from itself which will be Libra and when we count 9 signs from Libra we end up with Gemini. So the next Rasi Cancer will start from Cancer itself and thus all the 12 rasis will get completed. The given below table will illustrate this method. Only the first two letters of the rasi is given like Ar for Aries etc.

If you keenly observe the table above you will notice the following:
a. All the Navamsas are in running order beginning from Aries and ending in Pisces and again starting from Aries. For Aries rasi the Navamsa ends in Sagittarius and for the next rasi viz. Taurus it begins from Capricorn and so on.
b. The 9 Navamsas of a rasi is assigned to one movable, one fixed and one dual sign. Look at Ar (movable), Le (fixed) and Sg (dual) all get the same Navamsa. Similarly for the group Ta, Vi and Cp and so on.
An example will clarify the position.
Suppose a planet say Mercury is in 150 25’ at Virgo. Virgo is earthy sign. Hence starting point for Navamsa will be Capricorn. 150 25’ is in the 5th part of the Rasi by dividing it with 9. Hence counting 5 from Capricorn we come to Taurus. In the Navamsa chart Mercury will be placed in Taurus. Now refer the table above. Planet in consideration is in Virgo. Take the Rasi Name Virgo and go horizontally until you reach the degree of 13°21’-16°40’ as the palnet’s degree falls in this range. You see Ta as the Navamsa.
The Nakshatra in which a planet is placed can be used to fix the Navamsa of the said planet. Each Nakshatra is divided into 4 padas and the pada has a characteristic of the sign of the zodiac which starts from Aries. If you take 3 Nakshatras you get 12 padas (3 x 4) which can be equated to the 12 rasis.
However each rasi has been assigned only 2¼ Nakshatras or 9 padas only. So counting from Aries the 9th sign falls in Sagittarius. So the next Nakshatra pada should automatically start from Capricorn. Count 9 signs from Capricorn to end up in Virgo. The next Nakshatra pada should start from Libra. Similarly counting from Libra the 9th sign falls in Gemini and naturally the next Nakshatra pada will begin from Cancer. So the order of beginning is Aries, Capricorn, Libra and Cancer which tallies with the basic principle laid down in scriptures and as explained above.
To make matters simple I will conclude that the signs of padas and the Navamsa signs are the same.
Now let us examine the sample calculation made above according to this new rule: Mercury is in 150 25’ in Virgo. The Nakshatra is Hasta-2nd pada. Count the padas from Aswini to Hasta – 2nd. Aswini to Uttaraphalguni it is 12 Nakshatras or 12 x 4 = 48 pada. Add 2 padas of Hasta and the total pada is 50. For the 12 rasis we are allotting 12 padas. Hence 4 x 12 = 48 padas gets allotted to all the 12 rasis. 2 padas remain – starting from Aries the 2nd rasi will be Taurus which gets the 50th pada. So Mercury will be in Taurus in the Navamsa Chart which tallies with our principle stated earlier.
Mars is in Cancer 240 10’. The Nakshatra is Aslesha – 3rd pada. From Aswini till Pushyam 8 Nakshatras or 32 padas are there. Adding the 3 padas of Aslesha we get 35 padas. Staring from Aries allot each pada and you will end up in Aquarius as the 35th pada. This is what we have arrived at earlier.
To complete this calculation you must definitely require the Nakshatra and the pada in which the planet is placed or the longitude of the planet.
I give below a table containing all the 108 Navamsas for all Nakshatra Padas:
The purpose of this table is if you know the longitude of a planet without the sign name and Nakshatra pada you can find the Rasi, Nakshatra, Pada and Navamsa of the planet by looking at the cumulative longitude column. If you know the Rasi and the Longitude then select Rasi column and Longitude column and note the Nakshatra, Pada and Navamsa.

I am giving another table here which will be more easy to fix the first part as well as the 2nd
part of the Navamsa. This table has been taken from Navamsa in Astrology by Shri C.S. Patel and modified a little.
The signs shown in a vertical order refer to the planet’s position in Rasi Chart and the degree of signs refers to the degree of such a planet. The Navamsa rasi for a particular planet in a rasi can be found by going down the particular Rasi until you reach the range of the degree, the planet is placed in Rasi. For sake of space saving, only two letters of Navamsa rasi is given in the table. The Navamsa Rasis in bold indicate the Vargottama Navamsa.
How to find the Navamsa from the table ?
If in a horoscope say Ascendant is in 25° Sg 59’ Locate the Sagittarius rasi in the table and go down the column until the degree 25° 59’ range is found. This is found in the 8th row. We
find the Sc meaning that the Navamsa Lagna is Scorpio Navamsa. Like that for each of the planets you can find out the Navamsa rasi.
No Degrees Of signs Ar Ta Ge Cn Le Vi Li Sc Sg Cp Aq Pi 1 00°-00’ to 03°-20’ Ar Cp Li Cn Ar Cp Li Cn Ar Cp Li Cn 2 03°-20’ to 06°-40’ Ta Aq Sc Le Ta Aq Sc Le Ta Aq Sc Le 3 06°-40’ to 10°-00’ Ge Pi Sg Vi Ge Pi Sg Vi Ge Pi Sg Vi 4 10°-00’ to 13°-20’ Cn Ar Cp Li Cn Ar Cp Li Cn Ar Cp Li 5 13°-20’ to 16°-40’ Le Ta Aq Sc Le Ta Aq Sc Le Ta Aq Sc 6 16°-40’ to 20°-00’ Vi Ge Pi Sg Vi Ge Pi Sg Vi Ge Pi Sg 7 20°-00’ to 23°-20’ Li Cn Ar Cp Li Cn Ar Cp Li Cn Ar Cp 8 23°-20’ to 26°-40’ Sc Le Ta Aq Sc Le Ta Aq Sc Le Ta Aq 9 26°-40’ to 30°-00’ Sg Vi Ge Pi Sg Vi Ge Pi Sg Vi Ge Pi Method 3
Under this method you can calculate the Navamsa mentally.
1st Step: As the Navamsa is set up by dividing 30 degrees into 9 parts, the following table if memorized with a little practice can be used
Degree-Minutes NavamsaNo. of
00°-00’ to 03°-20’ 1 03°-20’ to 06°-40’ 2 06°-40’ to 10°-00’ 3 10°-00’ to 13°-20’ 4 13°-20’ to 16°-40’ 5 16°-40’ to 20°-00’ 6 20°-00’ to 23°-20’ 7 23°-20’ to 26°-40’ 8 26°-40’ to 30°-00’ 9
2nd Step: Take a note of the element that the planet occupies. All the 12 rasis are divided into 4 types of elements – Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Each Rasi beginning from Aries is assigned one element in the same order given above. Thus Aries is Fire; Taurus is Earth; Gemini is Air and Cancer is water. Then starting from Cancer the order is repeated until you reach Pisces. How to remember this Take the first lettes F-E-A-W. Just remember FEAR with the last letter indicating River (Water). The following table illustrates this clearly. In the North Indian format it is more easy to remember.

The given below North Indian chart was taken from Krushna’s Ashtakavarga System for which you can refer to the web site http://krushna.sageasita.com. My kind acknowledgements to them.
1. If a palnet is in FIRE sign, always start at Aries and count forward from there. Now look at the tables given under methods 1 and 2. You will find that the three fire signs Aries, Leo and Sagittarus always start from Aries.
2. If a planet in an Earth sign, always start at Capricorn and count forward. Again from the table you can notice that the Earth signs Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn all start from Capricorn.
3. If a planet is in an Air sign, start from Libra and count forward. From the table you can see that the Air signs Gemini, Libra and Aquarius all start from Libra.
4. Lastly when a planet is in Water sign start from cancer. The 3 Air signs Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces all start from Cancer can be verified from the table above.
Let us take an example: Suppose a planet is in 27° Vi 42’. Which Navamsa we have to fit for this planet. From the first table we notice that this lies in the range of 26°-40’ to 30°-00’ and that it gets 9 Navamsas. The starting point will be Capricorn from the figures given in the chart as Virgo is an Earthy sign. Count 9 rasis forward and you end up in Virgo which is the 9th number and this is the Navamsa the planet will be placed. You can verify this from the other tables too.
Method 4:
This is a corollary to Method 3 above. In the table of degrees and Navamsas given under step 1 the 10°, 20°, 30° are highlighted in red. The Navamsas against these degrees are 3, 6 and 9 respectively. We already know that each Navamsa is of 3° 20’ and by just doubling it we get 6° 40’. Just remember this much and calculate the Navamsa in the above example. 27° Vi 42’ is less than 30° and more than 20°. So for 20° you are going to assign 6 Navamsas. The balance is 7° 2’ which is more than the degree of 2 Navamsas viz. 6° 40’. So we must allocate 3 more Navamsas making a total of 9 Navamsas. There is no change as far as the counting 9 rasis are concerned which remains the same as explained in the previous method. Let us do one more example. A planet is in 16° 50’. Mentally we know that it is past 10° and hence 2 Navamsas it has crossed. Then 6° 50’ is already past 2 Navamsas (which would be 6° 40’). 2 + 2 Navamsas are over and we will fix the 5th rasi counted in forward direction beginning from either Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn depending on the placement of the planet in Rasi. One more thing you can remember is that the beginning degrees from 0 to 3° 20’ of planets placed in Aries or Cancer or Libra or Capricorn will be in the same Navamsa.
Conclusion:
Practically all standard classics as well as various Authors have explained the Navamsa as well as its importance in predictions. Navamsa is a back-bone and Rasi is only the body. Some authors have given importance to rising Navamsa while some others to Navamsa occupied by Moon. Hence beginners must understand the intricacies in the calculation of Navamsa and must be in
a position to mentally locate the Navamsa of a planet placed in Rasi. I hope this write up will be useful in this direction for beginners.

I came across another method of fixing the Navamsa while I was reading ‘Nadi Jyothisha OR The stellar System of Astrology’ written by Sri R. Gopalakrishna Row called as ‘MEENA’
Constellations of Ketu, Jupiter and Moon start their Navamsa from Aries and end in Cancer. Constellations of Mars, Saturn and Venus start their Navamsa from Leo and end in Scorpio. Constellations of Rahu, Mercury and Su start their Navamsa from Sagittarius and end in Pisces.
Explanations:
Constellations of Ketu Start their Navamsa from Aries –
That means that Aswini one of the constellations of Ketu starts its first pada from Aries. The second pada falls in Taurus; the third pada in Gemini and the fourth in cancer. The same applies to other constellations of Ketu, Jupiter and Moon.
The next star Bharani (starts from first pada) ruled by venus starts from Leo in Navamsa. The second falls in Virgo, the third in Libra and the fourth in Scorpio.
And Krittika starts from Dhanus and ends in Pisces in the above said manner. The following South Indian chart illustrates this simple technique in a better manner. IV Pada Aswini, Maka, Mula, Rohini, Hastha, Sravana, Punarvasu, Purvabhadra –
I Pada II Pada III pada
III pada IV Pada
II Pada Bharani, Purvaphalguni, Purvashada, Mrigasira, Chitra, Dhanishta, Pushya, Anuradha, Uttarabhadra I Pada Krittika, Uttaraphalguni, Uttarashada, Arudra, Swathi, satabhisha, Aslesha, Jyeshta, Raveti
I Pada
Suppose we want to find the Navamsa of Mrigasira – 4th pada. Locate Mrigasira in the table above which is in Leo – That is the 1st pada. The 4th pada falls in Scorpio which is the Navamsa of the planet placed in Mrigasira 4th pada in Rasi chart.
