THE PROBLEM

C a n d id a te s w e re re q u ire d to d e sig n a sch o o l w ith in a to ta l cost o f £ 1 0 0 ,0 0 0 , the p o r tio n to be b u ilt im m e d ia te ly a m o u n tin g to £ 7 0 ,0 0 0 . The schem e w a s to be so d e s ig n e d th a t th e la tte r p o rtio n w o u ld be c o m p le te a n d a rc h ite c tu ra lly e ffe c tiv e in its e lf w h ile p e r m ittin g the su b se q u e n t a d d itio n s to be m a d e w ith o u t s tru c tu ra l a lte ra tio n s o r serious in te rfe re n c e w ith th e ro u tin e o f the sch o o l.

Site: The b u ild in g s have been p la c e d h ig h up in the East c o rn e r o f th e site. Here, the best view s a re co m m a n d e d , a n d it is n o te w o rth y th a t, a lth o u g h the b u ild in g s lie on a so uth erly slope, none o f the classroom s is a t a lo w e r level tha n the su rro u n d in g te rra in o v e r w h ich it loo ks. The b u ild in g s mass up e ffe c tiv e ly fro m the to w n a p p ro a c h fro m the W e st, the rise in the site up to the e n tra n ces e n h a n cin g a n d d ra m a tis in g the structure.

G re a t ca re has been ta k e n to m ake use o f the e xistin g aven ue o f f ir trees to p ro te c t the b u ild in g s fro m the b la st o f the W e s t w in d . O f the e xistin g gum trees as in d ic a te d on the site p la n s u p p lie d , o n ly o n e has to be fe lle d .

The nece ssarily skew a n g le o f the b u ild in g s to the site b o u n d a rie s has been re so lve d b y c a re fu l a tte n tio n to the site p la n n in g o f trees, p la y g ro u n d s , sw im m in g b a th a nd a p p ro a c h paths.

G ate s: The m ain gates e n te r the school g ro u n d s o p p o site M a u ritz S tree t. The m ain a p p ro a c h swings a w a y to the East to a p a rk in g a re a e nclosed in a ro u n d a b o u t, a n d turns b ack on a second c ircle to d e liv e r passengers a t the M a in E ntrance. The m ain a p p ro a c h thus p ro g re ssive ly u n fo ld s the b u ild in g c o m p o sitio n in a th re e -d im e n s io n a l w b y, a nd te rm in a te s a t the v e ry h e a rt o f th e schem e, fa c in g the Entrance Porch.

The p u p ils ' a p p ro a c h lea d s d ire c tly to the b o y s ’ a nd g irls ' p la y g ro u n d s , a n d to th e b icycle sheds, sw im m ing baths, a n d sports g ro un ds.

B uild in g s in G e n e ra l: The b u ild in g s fo rm a v e ry co m p a ct g ro u p . This w as c o n sid e re d h ig h ly d e s ira b le to w ith sta n d the severe c lim a tic c o n d itio n s in H a rrism ith . Such a b u ild in g a lso m akes fo r ease o f c o n tro l a n d fo r a re d u c tio n o f

c irc u la tio n s to a m inim um le n g th . The g ro u n d flo o r levels o f the v a rio u s w in g s c o n fo rm close ly to the n a tu ra l slop e o f the g ro u n d , a n d a d v a n ta g e is ta k e n o f w h a t fa ll th e re is to house th e clo a k ro o m s a n d b ic y c le sheds at a lo w e r g ro u n d flo o r leve l. The m inim um o f e x c a v a tio n a n d o f h ig h fo u n ­ d a tio n w a lls is thus re q u ire d .

The fo rm o f the b u ild in g g ro u p is p a r tly sym m etrica l a n d p a rtly a sym m e trical. The sym m etry is e x h ib ite d fro m the W e s t o r p u p ils ' a p p ro a c h , a n d is e xpressive o f th e d ua l a p p ro a c h e s fo r boys a n d g irls. The S outhern e le v a tio n presents an a sym m e trical a p p e a ra n c e e xpre ssive o f the sing le d ire c tio n o f the M a in A p p ro a c h .

M a in A p p ro a c h : A c o v e re d w a y a lo n g the South o f the A ssem bly H a ll le a d s to the Entrance Porch w h ich is p ro te c te d b y the N o rth -S o u th w in g fro m the W e s t w in d . W h e n the A ssem bly H a ll is b e in g used, e n try to the school w ill be th ro u g h the M a in Foyer. O n o th e r occasio ns, visito rs w ill e n te r a W a itin g Room o ff the E ntrance Porch b e fo re b e in g re ce ive d b y the H e a d m a s te r v ia his s e c re ta ria l co n tro l.

P upils' A p p ro a c h : The Bicycle Sheds fo rm a screen to the Low er C o u rty a rd , in to w h ich the m ain a p p ro a c h e s fo r the pup ils le a d . The Bicycle Sheds stre tch fro m o n e w in g to the o th e r a n d ca n be p a rtitio n e d a t a n y in te rm e d ia te p o in t, if necessary, in p ro p o rtio n to th e n u m b e r o f b icycle s o w n e d b y boys a n d g irls.

From the Bicycle Sheds, a n d fro m e a ch p la y g ro u n d , g a te s le a d to the Low er C o u rty a rd , w h ic h can be used as an a ssem bly space. Pupils can the n m a rch up the c e re m o n ia l M a in Sta irca se, th ro u g h the M a in F oyer, to the A ssem bly H a ll.

H e a d m a s te r a n d S ta ff Com m on Room : The H e a d m a s­ te r ’ s O ffic e a n d S ta ff C om m on Room a re p la n n e d in a N o rth -S o u th w in g o n e ith e r sid e o f the M a in S taircase. T hey a re th e re fo re c e n tra lly p la c e d to a ll the classroom s a n d to th e m ain circ u la tio n s .

The H e a d m a ste r's O ffic e is a p p ro a c h e d in tw o w a ys: o n e , fo r visito rs, fro m th e W a itin g Room a n d , the o th e r, fo r p up ils, th ro u g h a lo b b y , fro m the school c irc u la tio n .

The S ta ff C om m on Room a n d S ta ff L ava torie s a re p la ce d on the o th e r sid e o f the M a in S ta irca se, thus re m o vin g these e le m e n ts s lig h tly fro m the M a in E ntrance d oo rs. The L ava to rie s a re close a t h a n d to the M a in Foyer a n d A ssem bly H a ll, a n d co u ld be used b y vis itin g aud ien ces.

Classroom s: The o rd in a ry C lassroom s a re g ro u p e d to g e th e r in the N o rth w in g , e n jo y in g the best v ie w a n d lig h t. Two o f th e la b o ra to ry units a re p la n n e d , o ne a b o v e the o th e r, in the southern w in g , to g e th e r w ith th e ty p in g a nd b o o k k e e p in g classroom s. The la tte r a re p la c e d n e a r to the p u b lic a p p ro a c h d riv e , m a kin g them e s p e c ia lly co n ve n ie n t fo r n ig h t classes. The re m a in in g tw o la b o ra to rie s a re g ro u p e d a t the e aste rn e nd o f the N o rth w in g . S ervice stairs lin k the p airs o f la b o ra to rie s in e a ch case. In the fin a l schem e, it ca n be d e c id e d w h e th e r the tw o p a irs o f sim ila r la b o ra to rie s sh ou ld be g ro u p e d to g e th e r o n e a b o v e the o th e r o r n ot.

L ib ra ry a n d P re fe cts' Room : The L ib ra ry is p la c e d on the firs t flo o r , o v e r the H e a d m a s te r's suite a n d fa c in g East. It is a lso c o n v e n ie n tly p la c e d n e a r to the M a in A p p ro a c h fo r th e use o f n ig h t-tim e classes a n d f o r e x tra -m u ra l w o rk.

A P re fe cts' Room has a lso b ee n in c lu d e d on the u p p e r leve l, fa c in g East o n to the U p p e r C o u rty a rd .

A r o o f te rra c e o v e r the M a in F oyer g ives access to the p ro je c to r ro o m in th e A ssem bly H a ll.

Use o f S cho o l a t N ig h t: A t n ig h t the s u b s id ia ry e n tra n ce a n d stairs fro m the g ir ls ' p la y g ro u n d w o u ld serve as c o n ­

v e n ie n t access to the ty p e w ritin g a n d b o o k k e e p in g class­ room s a n d to the L ib ra ry.

Assem bly H a ll, S ta g e a n d Dressing Rooms: The a rra n g e ­ m ent o f the A ssem bly H a ll a n d its a n c illa ry a cco m m o d a tio n is s e lf-e x p la n a to ry . Escape D oors to the U p p e r C o u rty a rd a re p a rt o f la rg e s lid in g -fo ld in g d oo rs o p e n in g the H a ll to the C o u rty a rd , w h ich can be used as an a u x ilia ry sp ace fo r se rving teas w hen fete s a n d sim ila r fu n ctio n s a re h e ld . The c le re sto re y w in d o w s can be b la c k e d o ut fo r cine m a p e r ­ fo rm a n ce s b y liftin g m e ch a n ica lly o p e ra te d v e rtic a lly s lid in g screens o v e r them .

The Assem bly H a ll is so p la ce d th a t, if used d u rin g the d a y fo r a n y n oisy p urpo se, it w o u ld n ot d is tu rb a n y o f the classroom s.

N a tiv e Q u a rte rs a n d B o ile r Room. These a re p la n n e d a t the East e nd o f the A ssem bly H a ll. Service d e liv e rie s o f co a l a n d scenery a re e ffe c te d fro m Bell Street. The smoke fro m the B oile r C h im n ey is b lo w n c le a r o f the school b u ild in g s b y the p re v a ilin g w in ds.

S ta g es o f D e velo pm en t: It was d e c id e d th a t S ection B o f the p ro g ra m m e should be c a p a b le o f b e in g co nstru cted in o n e single s e lf-c o n ta in e d w in g so th a t the b u ild in g o p e ra t­ ions w o u ld n ot in te rfe re in a ny w a y w ith the ru n n in g o f the school. The n e w classroom s should also be as c o n v e n ie n tly lo c a te d in re la tio n to th e C lo a kro o m s, S ta ff Q u a rte rs a nd A ssem bly H a ll as those p re vio u sly b uilt.
