A 1696 Visit to

"Quanestagua"

By Charles E. Hunter

A t Conestoga, in October 1705, James Logan, the Provincial

Secretary, reminded the Indians that William Penn had visited them —

probably in the year 1700 — and that his son, William Penn Jr.,

had been there in 1704. However, a document in the British Public

Records Office in London brings to light an earlier official visit to

Conestoga by Pennsylvania provincial agents in 1696, and touches on the

relations of the Indians there with groups farther west. It also

under-scores the relative mobility of Indians, singly or in groups, during the

period of their early contact with Europeans.

(2)

Informed of these events, Governor Markham lost no time in

consultation and arranging to send a delegation to Conestoga to assure

the Indians of the Colony's concern and support. Captain Cock

volun-teered to deliver the governor's message, and, to give further weight

to the embassy, he was accompanied by fifteen Indians whose spokesmen

were entrusted with messages from Tangoros and Seacoppy, chief men of

the Delaware Indians then living on the Schuylkill River in present

Montgomery County.

The embassy left Philadelphia about June 27, 1696, arrived at

Conestoga on July 7, and returned to Philadelphia on July 14. Cock's

report notes the Indians' satisfaction at the Province's concern, makes

reference to the Conestogas' friendship with the Schuylkill Indians, and

projects a journey by some of the Conestogas to Philadelphia the

follow-ing autumn. It also permits, together with the earlier verbal report,

some discussion of the circumstances involved in the raids.

The presence on the Susquehanna of Miami Indians, whose home

was in what is now Indiana, calls for some explanation. Actually,

this Miami raid was not an isolated incident; the Lower Susquehanna

suffered a series of such attacks. The Indians of the Northeast in

general seem to have been somewhat ambivalent about their own

proximity to white settlements and trading stations. On the one hand,

a number of the effects of contact with Europeans served to disrupt

the traditional patterns of Indian life, and efforts were made by many

groups to avoid these effects by staying out of harm's way; on the other

hand, access to desirable European-supplied goods was to be had primarily

through trade, either through direct contact with whites or by exchanges

through Indian intermediaries, but in either case drawing the Indians

toward white settlements. So, odd though it may seem at first thought,

these Miami raids may have been motivated by the desire to establish

trade relations. Earlier in the century, the Susquehannocks themselves

had attacked the Delawares in order to gain access to trading stations

at the head of Delaware Bay. Later in the century, the Susquehannocks

in turn were attacked by the Seneca, motivated in part, at least, by

their

desire for a better trade outlet.

(3)

The embassy was successful, and warmly approved by the Conestoga

Indians. As Captain Cock concluded in his report,

As we had don Speaking The Susquehanna Indians roase up all together and in a great Shout Cry'd out very good, verygood, very good, and then sat in Councill a little time, afterwards one Roase up and said. In ye ffal of ye Leafe wee think some of us to Come and See ye Goverr. then Stroak us said wee are very glad, very glad, very glad, Wee see now what Thomas Lloyd Said is true, that ye Christians are the same in friendship now as then.
