TECHNICAL PAPER 5

System diagram and description

Below you can find the network interconnection diagram of the Hyper-Converged Platform. It consist of two servers with Windows Server 2012 R2 OS with pre-configured Hyper-V. Also it includes the 5nine Hyper-V manager as management software and Veeam Backup and Replication as backup solution.

(6)

TECHNICAL PAPER 6 The Hyper-V cluster is managed by the domain configured as the virtual machine that runs on top of this cluster.

The system is fully pre-configured and ready to be integrated into the existing infrastructure.

To review all the technical specifications of the server please refer to the corresponding Data Sheet paper.

Caution: before beginning any procedures in this document, follow the safety instructions that shipped with the system.

Servers naming and credentials

The servers by default are configured with the following domain names:

[email protected] [email protected]

The domain name of the Active Directory virtual machine is following:

[email protected]

The default credentials for the servers are:

Local credentials:

Login: administrator Password: HCPU2015 Domain credentials:

Login: [email protected] Password: HCPU2015

Getting started

There are several stages to setting up the Hyper-Converged Platform.

Step 1: Physical Setup

1. Put the servers into the rack.

2. Plug all the servers and a switch into AC power using the enclosed power cables.

3. Turn the switch on

4. Turn the HCPU1 server on 5. Turn the HCPU2 server on

Step 2: Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 setup

The system comes up with the Windows Server 2012 R2 already installed and configured, including the Hyper-V role. The Microsoft Hyper-V Failover Cluster is validated, created and configured as well.

Once the operation system is started disable the automatic Windows Updates by following the steps below:

1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button.

In the search box, type Update, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update.

2. In the left pane, click Change settings.

3. Under Important updates, choose the option that you want.

4. Under Recommended updates, select the Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates check box, and then click OK. If you're prompted for an

administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

TECHNICAL PAPER 8

Step 3: Launch StarWind Virtual SAN

Once the operation system started the splash screen of StarWind management console splash screen will pop-up.

Also, the corresponding services should be started in the Service Manager of Windows.

StarWind Virtual SAN can be used to run the shared storage, which is possible to maintain using the StarWind Management Console or PowerShell scripting.

For further StarWind configuration and maintenance operation assistance refer to the StarWind Resource Library:

https://www.starwind.com/resource-library

Step 4: start 5nine Manager

5nine Manager for Hyper-V is a virtual infrastructure management tool, joining standard Hyper-V manager functions and virtual network management tools. 5nine Manager for Hyper-V provides an easy-to-use graphical interface for all editions of Hyper-V. It installs easily on the full and core versions of Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Windows Server 2012/2012 R2, and Hyper-V Server 2012/2008 R2 SP1.

5nine Manager for Hyper-V is the only Hyper-V management tool that installs directly on a Windows Server Core or a Free Hyper-V Server.

5nine Manager for Hyper-V has its own file manager with the ability to copy files between VMs, and between a VM and host. The ease of transfer allows easy operating on OS without GUI and file explorer.

This feature is an added value compared to the standard MS Hyper-V manager, which will not allow these operations.

(9)

TECHNICAL PAPER 9 5nine Manager for Hyper-V performs ALL aspects of Hyper-V Management, including:

• Removing and editing virtual machines, virtual networks, and virtual disks.

• Supporting Generation 2 virtual machines creation (applies for hosts with Windows Server 2012 R2).

• Viewing resource allocation and utilization of virtual machines.

• Full virtual machine checkpoint management.

Additionally, 5nine Manager for Hyper-V performs the following features that are absent in the standard MS Hyper-V management tool:

• Own graphical user-friendly interface – file manager with built-in transfer virtual hard drive with a capacity up to 127 Gb for exploring files and network shares, even on Windows Core and Free Hyper-V.

• Quality of Service management – setting of minimum and maximum Input Output operations per second (IOPS) throttling for the virtual hard disk attached to a virtual machine (applies for hosts with Windows Server 2012 R2)

• System Status Report presented in the intuitive graphical form. Available in the full version of 5nine Manager for Hyper-V.

• Failover cluster manager function, such as VM migration between nodes. Available in the full version of 5nine Manager for Hyper-V.

Once the operation system started the 5nine Hyper-V Manager will be automatically started. You should see the splash screen of 5nine Manager Console splash screen.

(10)

TECHNICAL PAPER 10 From here it is possible to manage the Hyper-V cluster and its virtual machines.

Also, the corresponding services should be started in the Service Manager of Windows.

To start single instance of 5nine Manager for Hyper-V use its shortcuts on the computer(s) where it is installed. The common single instance will be launched:

For further 5nine manager operation guidance refer to the 5nine Getting Started guide:

http://www.5nine.com/Docs/5nineManager_Guide.pdf

Step 5: running Veeam Backup&Replication

Veeam Backup & Replication provides a set of features for building and maintaining a flexible backup infrastructure, performing data protection tasks (such as VM backup, replication, copying backup files), and carrying out disaster recovery procedures. This section contains a high-level overview of Veeam Backup & Replication, its architecture, features, data protection and disaster recovery concepts necessary to understand Veeam Backup & Replication background operations and processes.

The Veeam software comes pre-configured on the system, and it will launch automatically after the operations system will be started.

Once the operation system started the splash screen of Veeam Backup and Replication Console splash screen will pop-up.

(11)

TECHNICAL PAPER 11 Also, the corresponding services should be started in the Service Manager of Windows.

For further StarWind configuration and maintenance operation assistance refer to Veeam Technical Documentation:

http://www.veeam.com/en/documentation-guides-datasheets.html

Step 6: Update drivers and BIOS

Dell updates drivers, applications and firmware to meet the demands of new software and hardware.

Visit the Drivers and Downloads help site to learn how to get the latest drivers for your Dell.

Please note that the servers may be rebooted one at the time in order to accomplish the updates installation. Before rebooting the server please make sure that StarWind devices are synchronized by checking their state in the StarWind management console.
