Welcome to Trinity Presbyterian Church

April 18, 2021 – Third Sunday of Easter To Our Guests:

Visiting a church can be an intimidating experience, especially in this time of a pandemic! We are glad that you are here, and we hope to remove as much of that awkwardness as we can from your visit to Trinity.

Our Sunday service usually lasts about an hour, and this bulletin is designed to help you navigate it. There are short paragraphs on the following pages to explain each part. The goal of the service is to help each of us to see Jesus more clearly and understand more fully how he makes a difference in our lives. Our hope is that every part of the service is accessible to you, whether you’ve spent years in the church or you’ve never been to a church service in your life.

If you are new to Trinity or just visiting, we would love to meet you! If you can, please hang around for a few minutes after the service so we can get to know you. If you have any questions about Trinity, Pastor Geoff Ziegler would enjoy hearing from you (you can email him at geoff@trinityhinsdale.com).

Our weekly e-newsletter is full of information about Trinity events and ways to get involved in our church life.

To find out more information about our church or sign up for our e-newsletter, visit our website, www.trinityhinsdale.com.

Welcome

Call to Worship:

The primary actor in Christian worship is not us. It’s God. He is the one who has forgiven us and lovingly enables us to worship him. The Call to Worship reminds us that no matter what our economic or social status is, no matter how much we have failed or how inadequate we might feel, God welcomes us to draw near.

Call to Worship – Matthew 11:27-30

“All things have been committed to me by my Father.

No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you!

Come, let us worship our God!

Pastor Nick Owens

Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah

Words: William Williams, Jeremy Casella. Music: Jeremy Casella.

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land.

I am weak, but Thou art mighty;

Hold me with Thy powerful hand.

Bread of heaven,

Feed me now and evermore;

Bread of heaven,

Feed me now and evermore.

Open now the crystal fountain, Whence the healing waters flow;

Let the fire and cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through.

Strong Deliverer,

Be Thou still my Strength and Shield.

Strong Deliverer,

Be Thou still my Strength and Shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside;

Death of death, and Hell's destruction, Land me safe on Canaan's side.

Songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee;

Songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee.

Silent Prayer

Be Thou My Vision

Words & Music: Irish Hymn.

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;

Naught be all else to me, save that thou art;

Thou my best thought, by day or by night Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true Word, I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;

Thou my great Father I thy true son Thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.

Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise, Thou mine inheritance, now and always:

Thou and thou only first in my heart, High King of heaven my treasure thou art High King of heaven my victory won,

May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's Sun!

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Confession of Faith - Heidelberg Catechism Q&A 1

Christian, what is your only comfort in life and in death?

That I am not my own, but belong— body and soul, in life and in death— to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.

He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil.

He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven;

in fact, all things must work together for my salvation.

Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit,

assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him. Amen.

Prayer is one of the primary ways we fulfill our calling to love God and neighbor. We are given the privilege of asking our gracious God to care for the needs of each other and the world around us. And as we pray together, we reorient ourselves to the greatness of our God, learning to depend on him in expectant hope.

Prayers of the People

Dear Father in heaven, our sustainer, we worship you this morning. We remember your love for us shown in so many ways, starting with creation itself, where you breathed life into humanity and blessed Adam and Eve with abundance. We remember your promises to Abraham to make a people for yourself that would extend your glory to the world. We remember your presence with your people in their desert wanderings, residing with them and guiding them. And we bring joyful praise to you this morning for the gift of your Son, who died on the cross to bear the cost of sin that we cannot bear, so that we can have new life and extend your love to your lost and hurting world. Help us rest in your loving care.

Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Jesus our Redeemer, you understand our frailties and weakness, as you willingly set aside your glory and entered our world in human form. You continue to love us by delighting in hearing our prayers and blessing us more than we can understand. We pray that we would grow to resemble you more each day by living lives marked by humility in our interactions with others; those in our homes, in our neighborhoods, in our workplaces, and in our opinions of others. We pray that you would change us so that we live by your kingdom's priorities instead of our own, willing to sacrifice our comfort and security to meet the needs of others, as you did for us.

Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Holy Spirit, we pray that you would empower us to live out our inheritance as saints in this world, and for boldness in extending your kingdom through acts of mercy, grace, and justice towards others. Give us a joy in experiencing that reality, and the ability to love each other well. We pray for eyes to see opportunity, and words to use to invite others to join us on this journey of faith. We pray that you would knit us into a community, a physical expression of the spiritual truth that we are one body, united in Christ, for his glory and the good of the world.

Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

And with churches throughout the world we pray together, as your Son taught us to pray, saying:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

At the very heart of worship is not our speech, but God’s. We express our loving faith in God first and foremost by listening carefully to him.

Scripture Reading – Acts 3

Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. 2 And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. 3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms. 4 And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” 5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. 6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you.

In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. 8 And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. 9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 and recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

11 While he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon’s. 12 And when Peter saw it he addressed the people: “Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk? 13 The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. 14 But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses.

16 And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.

17 “And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers.

18 But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled. 19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, 20 that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, 21 whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago. 22 Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you. 23 And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.’ 24 And all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who came after him, also proclaimed these days. 25 You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.’ 26 God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness.”

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

Community Confession of Sin

Confession of Sin:

Our loving Father welcomes us into his presence to confess how we have sinned against him and our neighbors. This allows us to speak about our sin truthfully, both publicly and privately.

Good News of the Gospel

The gospel declares, "Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus,"

Brothers and sisters who have repented and turned to Christ, God has forgiven your sins and has poured out his life-giving Spirit upon you. Thanks be to God!

The Lord’s Supper

God welcomes us to his table, promising to nourish believers spiritually in Christ through these signs of his loving commitment to us, his church. All baptized believers in Christ are invited to participate in this family meal and have their faith strengthened. If you have not yet professed your faith in Christ, we ask that you instead use this period as a time of reflection and prayer. We invite you to use any of the prayers printed below.

Prayer for Those Searching for Truth

Lord God, I don’t really know who you are. Please show yourself to me. The Bible says that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. If this is true, please help me to see this and accept Jesus as your Son, no matter what that might cost me. Help me to know you.

Prayer of Belief and Repentance

Lord Jesus Christ, I confess to you that I am deeply sinful and desperately need your help. I believe what you have said in your Word: that you love me and have died for me to bring me back home to God. I turn from my old way of life, from being my own master, and I place my trust in you. You are now my king. You are now my savior who has forgiven me. I promise to follow you wherever you lead me.

Prayer for Those Overcome By Doubt and Sin

Lord God, I’m no longer sure that I believe in you or that any of this is real. And I realize that my life doesn’t reflect a faith in you. I feel like something is missing, but I don’t know what to do. Please have mercy on me and lead me back to you.

Come Ye Souls By Sin Afflicted

Words: Joseph Swain (alt. Twit). Music: Kevin Twit.

Come ye souls by sin afflicted, Bowed with fruitless sorrow down;

By the broken law convicted, Through the cross behold the crown;

Look to Jesus; Look to Jesus; Look to Jesus, Mercy flows through Him alone.

Take His easy yoke and wear it;

Love will make your obedience sweet;

Christ will give you strength to bear it, While His grace shall guide your feet Safe to glory, Safe to glory, Safe to glory, Where His ransomed captives meet.

Blessed are the eyes that see Him, Blest the ears that hear His voice;

Blessed are the souls that trust Him, And in Him alone rejoice;

His commandments, His commandments, His commandments Then become their happy choice.

Sweet as home to pilgrims weary, Light to newly opened eyes, Like full springs in deserts dreary, Is the rest the cross supplies;

All who taste it, All who taste it, All who taste it Shall to rest immortal rise.

Look to Jesus; Look to Jesus; Look to Jesus;

Mercy flows through Him alone.

Gloria Patri

Words: 2nd Century. Music: Henry Greatorex, 1851.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

Benediction Jesus Shall Reign

Words: Isaac Watts. Music: Jon Hatton.

Jesus shall reign wherever the sun Does his successive journeys run;

His kingdom stretch from shore to shore, Till moons shall wax and wane no more.

To him shall endless prayer be made, And praises throng to crown his head;

His name, like sweet perfume, shall rise With every morning sacrifice.

People and realms of everyone tongue Dwell on his love with sweetest song;

And infant voices shall proclaim Their early blessings on his name.

Blessings abound wherever he reigns;

The prisoner leaps to lose his chains, The weary find eternal rest,

And all the sons of want are blest.

Let every creature rise and bring Peculiar honors to our King;

Angels descend with songs again;

And earth repeat the loud amen!
