The Executive MBA

A BIGGER MBA

Executive

(2)

Building a successful career requires personal commitment and investment. Investment in terms of time and money to build new skills and capabilities to pursue your ambitions as a successful professional.

For many choosing to study for an MBA is making that commitment to fulfilling your potential as a senior manager.

Welcome to your future

International MBA

Other universities will promise an international dimension to the course, with case studies of global companies or analysis of overseas market environments. The UEA Executive MBA goes further and is truly international in that during your second year, we deliver part of your MBA in the Czech Republic. Students spend a week working with companies in Prague delivering a consultancy project focussed on delivering practical outcomes and benefits for the client.

Cohort experience

We focus on building a diverse group of students every year who maximise the benefit of MBA study through learning together.

Studying within a peer group of other professionals adds to your learning experience and offers a clear advantage over studying for an MBA via a detached distance learning route. Upon graduation from your MBA course, you will have developed a professional network that will continue to be of benefit in years to come. Many of our alumni stay in touch with each other years after graduation.

The best tutors

Only the most experienced lecturers are selected to teach on the Executive MBA, with a focus on those who combine industry experience with academic achievement. Many of our tutors have achieved Professorial rank and are authorities in their field. Many MBA students are already Senior Managers or Company Directors and demand a high standard of education and the UEA teaching team has the necessary strength and depth to deliver this.

Studying whilst continuing your career

The Executive MBA is specifically designed to allow busy professionals to balance the demands of studying for an MBA with working full-time. Over the years we have tailored the programme to combine flexibility with maintaining the rigour of a Masters-level course. Over the duration of the course, the personal and professional circumstances of many students change and we have built a reputation of responding to allow students to continue their studies.

Thank you for your interest in the course and we look forward to you joining our next cohort of MBA students.

Executive MBA modules

Year 1 compulsory modules

During Year 1 students follow seven compulsory modules, taking two modules each term. These are:

Customer Focus and Innovation

This intensive and exciting double module starts the Executive MBA programme! It explores the most important sources of value creation for an organisation – customer focus, marketing and innovation.

Operations and Logistics

Looks at modern organisational supply chain tactics, concepts and techniques as well as dealing with some of the current problems and issues that firms face in managing global supply structures.

International Business Environment

Students will be given an understanding of the economic environment in which businesses operate, including key economies such as the United States, Japan and the European Union.

Accounting and Financial Analysis

This module examines the compilation and use of accounting information prepared by organisations in both the public and private sectors. The module focuses on the use of accounting and financial information by different users of accounts. It includes financial accounting and reporting to those external to the organisation; and management accounting and decision-making for managers within an organisation.

Strategic Risk Management

This module disentangles the components of strategic risk and through case studies and interaction with real businesses, allows students to create new strategic risk management processes applicable in busy organisations.

Information Systems

A significant trend in modern management is the growing importance of information systems. The module is intended to equip managers with sufficient knowledge to be active and inform participants in organisational decision making and information management.

Management and Changing Organisations

The knowledge base and scientific foundations of managing people comes principally from the field of Organisational Behaviour (OB). OB is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals and groups have on behaviour within organisations. OB provides the basis for successfully motivating people, improving the experience of work for people, and dealing with the people related issues that can accelerate or hinder organisational change.

Year 2 compulsory modules

In Year 2 students study a further five compulsory modules, one of which comprises two major consultancy projects. Students are also required to select two optional modules. Compulsory modules include:

Management Consultancy Skills

Students will undertake two consultancy projects during their studies – one international and one here in the UK. This module replaces the traditional dissertation and enables students to practise the real application of knowledge gained from taught modules and to show their skills in dealing with situations where theory might be adapted to help an organisation achieve its goals. Students undertake a taught module of consultancy and research methods to support the integration of management theory during the consultancy projects.

Strategy and Leadership

The best way to respond to the future is to create the future. This module uses theoretical frameworks, along with significant investigation of the real world, to allow managers to gain a wider perception of what strategy really is and why it is critical to their attaining top positions within organisations.

Also, progression in organisations requires that we are willing to change.

It also recognises that change for good requires energy, conscious decisions and leadership.

Investment Appraisal and Valuation

This module will provide a solid grounding in the principles of financial management and decision-making within companies. You will become familiar with investment appraisal techniques and the decisions around capital budgeting within a company, as well as the valuation of the company itself.

Managing Talent

Explores the management of self and others’ talents. It starts at the micro level of the individual, moving through organisation and up to the macro levels of national and global society.

Corporate Responsibility

The world is facing an increasing number of global social, environmental and economic challenges, from poverty and climate change to the failure of national economies and the unsustainable consumption of natural resources. An increasing number of corporates are finding that many of these challenges create new business opportunities and offer the potential for new business models that not only deliver financial profits, but wider value to their stakeholders, society, the environment and the economy.

In this module managers will learn how to identify the potential risks and opportunities associated with corporate responsibility and how to develop a corporate responsibility strategy that will deliver sustainable value.

(4)

The total number of credits needed for an MBA is 180. Two optional modules can be chosen. Please note that in some years certain modules may not be available.

Course statistics

Each year we build a cohort of students from a wide variety of personal and professional backgrounds.

This diversity is a key element of the course and adds significantly to the MBA experience.

Every year is different but as an example, here is the profile of the 2012 cohort.

Year 2 optional modules

During Year 2 students must select two optional modules.

The list currently includes:

Corporate Finance

This module will provide a solid grounding in the principles of financial management and decision-making within companies. You will become familiar with the decisions around investment appraisal, sources of finance, capital structure, risk management and valuation.

Economic and Business Forecasting

This module is designed for students who wish to have a working knowledge of some popular econometric techniques with forecasting applications. Emphasis will be given to techniques and procedures that a) enable analysts to come up with reliable forecasts, and; b) performance tests that can be applied to assess the quality of the methods applied and compare alternative methodologies.

Entrepreneurship

This module develops both theoretical awareness and a practical understanding of entrepreneurship. It extends to an outline of SME development and involves the production of a substantial Business Plan for the formation or growth of an entrepreneurial business.

Marketing and Management of Services

This module provides an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the marketing management of services. It helps students to appreciate the unique problems involved in the management of services, and assist them to master strategies, policies and techniques designed to increase the performance of contemporary service organisations.

Pre-MBA job function

(5)

The practical application of theory, models and frameworks is an important feature of our MBA programme. We believe that the most effective way to do this is by application of knowledge to real challenges faced by real organisations. The vehicle for this are consultancy projects which build confidence in students to operate at a strategic level in a live environment.

Consultancy projects

Although a proportion of our graduates do decide to go into consultancy, the consultancy projects we expose our students to provide experience and skills relevant to all managers whatever their functional position. Each project tests the student in group work dynamics, project management and dealing with clients in a problem solving context.

During the second year of the Executive MBA students undertake two projects. The first project is international – students work with a client from the Czech Republic and this concludes with an intensive week of project work in Prague in the spring. The second is an extended project lasting 12-16 weeks with a client from the UK. They are significant pieces of group work which require each student to undertake 150- 200 hours of activity within each project. Projects are carefully selected to ensure they address real issues which the host companies are facing. All projects matter to the hosts and students often find that these translate immediately to their curriculum vitae – they are challenging and result in significant outputs for client organisations.

Previous projects:

Local NHS Trust

The student consultancy team were asked to examine the effectiveness of change management within this large complex organisation. After conducting a staff survey and holding focus groups the team delivered a series of practical and research based recommendations that were based on the latest academic thinking in this field. The organisation adopted the recommendations as the way forward for the organisation.

Private school

MBA consultants reviewed the marketing and branding of the business within a very competitive market environment. Research was carried out into the level of awareness and engagement with the School within its target market. The team produced a new marketing strategy, including a recommendation that the School take a new name, which was adopted by the Board of Governors and new Headmaster.

Health and beauty salon

One of Norfolk’s most high-end and prestigious salons asked for advice on preparing the business for eventual sale. The student consultants carried out interviews with experts in this arena along with a rigorous analysis of the business and its future prospects.

The team delivered a set of practical recommendations that supported the owners exit strategy from the business.

Estate Agency Franchise – Czech Republic

The world’s largest estate agency franchise needed a foundation for a new Quality Assurance system for their new national network of estate agents. The students developed a framework based on industry best practise around the world and conducted field research in and around Prague during their week in the capital.

Before students are allocated consultancy projects they undergo 30 hours of consultancy skills training in a classroom environment. During the consultancy activity each group is mentored and supported in both technical areas and group dynamics. This commitment to professional level consultancy aligned to academic knowledge has meant that we are able to offer our students the Institute of Consulting / Chartered Management Institute Diploma in Management Consultancy in addition to the MBA. The curriculum is fully mapped and for those wishing to achieve the Diploma there is a final assignment at the end of the MBA programme. We were the first university in the UK to offer this joint award.

Case studies

With her current role as the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Manager at Aviva, Zoe Slater has a senior and very challenging job. Based in Aviva’s Commercial Finance department in the centre of Norwich, she is responsible for a team that lends Aviva funds secured against PPP projects

“Our primary focus is on healthcare projects, realising the funding with which to upgrade and build new medical centres or community hospitals. We are also very active in the schools market both with the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) and the Building Schools for the Future programme. At the moment we are looking to expand into other sectors such as student accommodation and infrastructure for the emergency services.

I completed the Executive MBA at Norwich Business School in 2008. Everyone warned us that it would be a tough few months - continuing to work full time whilst taking on a masters level study programme - but it was worth it. I enjoyed my course immensely and being so pressed for time actually reinforced the importance of good time management for me and how I had to focus my efforts on the things which counted most. It’s a good lesson to learn for all areas of modern living, not just in your working life.”

Beginning his career as a solicitor, Neil Doncaster has been involved in the UK football industry for 15 years in a series of senior positions. As Chief Executive of Norwich City Football Club for seven years until 2009, he led the drive to position Norwich City not only as a financially sound organisation but also one that was at the heart of the community as a consultative, accessible family club. Neil was also a director of the Football League and the Football Association in that period. In 2009, Neil was appointed as Chief Executive of the Scottish Premier League, where he has overseen a growth in income for Scotland’s premier football clubs through new broadcasting deals and centrally negotiated commercial partnerships.

“In 2005 I was looking at what I might do by way of personal development, to maximise my performance at Norwich City and to take the next level up in my career if the chance arose. I looked at the part-time MBA at Norwich Business School. It made sense to me – the studies were spread over 27 months and lectures and seminars were cleverly clustered into regular blocks of time – I knew I could continue to be effective at Norwich City and study a Master’s degree at the same time. Besides, UEA was within easy reach for me and it did not take long to get to the University from the football club or the city centre.”

MBA – A bigger future

A BIGGER MBA

Full-time | Executive | Strategic Carbon Management

(8)

Norwich Business School has offered a successful MBA programme since 1992.

As an innovative and forward-thinking business school we pride ourselves not only on our teaching but our application of internationally recognised research too.

The MBA difference

We offer three MBA courses, which start in January each year:

The Full-time MBA, The Executive MBA (part-time),

The Strategic Carbon Management MBA.

MBA study at Norwich Business School is a valuable experience, so if you come for an MBA, here are a few things you can leave with…

A top tier MBA from a world-class University

The University of East Anglia is ranked within the top two per cent of universities worldwide, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2012-13. With our recent AMBA accreditation this means that our MBA courses are positioned within the top tier of all MBAs worldwide.

A global business perspective

We consistently attract a diverse range of students to study on our MBA; our latest graduating cohort consisted of students from 21 different nationalities on our full- time courses, which means that you can gain an international business perspective and learn about business culture from the experience of your peers.

Tried and tested consultancy skills All our MBA students participate in live and challenging consultancy projects, which replace the more traditional dissertation. These projects are

undertaken by groups of students acting as consultancy teams to address real problems and issues in organisations.

Therefore our students are able to apply their learning and put it into practice straight away with real life companies and situations.

An additional qualification On completion of the MBA, with only one additional piece of reflective work, students will be jointly awarded a Diploma in Management Consultancy from the Chartered Management Institute/Institute of Consulting. We were the first UK university to make this joint award.

A kitbag of business models and frameworks

Studying for an MBA at Norwich Business School will give you the confidence to operate at a senior level. You will leave having learnt various management tools and techniques to encourage success in whatever organisation you work in.

An exceptional student experience Students at the University have consistently ranked us in the top ten for student satisfaction every year since the National Student Survey began.

Alongside our top quality academic experience, we are part of a distinctive and attractive campus that provides sporting, social and cultural facilities to about 14,000 students.

A larger business address book In addition to networking with your peers and alumni, we provide opportunities for you to connect with businessmen and women via local and national business networks, the companies connected to our consultancy projects and invited masterclass speakers. Many people who have undertaken an MBA with us have formed close bonds with their peers and made friends and acquaintances for life.

Membership to our MBA alumni network

When you join our MBA, you can become a member of the Norwich Business School MBA network on LinkedIn. With your MBAs in common, it is a place for you to swap ideas, discuss issues and network.

We also hold MBA networking events, which are a great opportunity for past and present MBA students to meet, make new connections and be reunited with past members of their class.

(9)

Our postgraduate community forms one of the central strengths of the University.

We have established a reputation as an internationally-recognised centre for research and teaching. We maintain this reputation by selecting the most able and dedicated staff and students from around the world, and challenge them to reach their full potential.

Our large, cosmopolitan postgraduate community – nearly a fifth of our students – ensures that graduate study and activities are well supported throughout the University.

World-class university

A tradition of excellence

The University was founded in 1963 and is now one of the top UK universities for research, teaching and overall student satisfaction. We are ranked among the top 180 universities in the world and in the UK top 25 by the 2013 Guardian University Guide. We have been in the top ten for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey since it began and have twice won The Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education in 2009 and 2011.

With externally-funded research projects worth over £100 million, we are one of Britain’s premier research and teaching universities and are committed to achieving international standards of excellence. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise, almost 90 per cent of the University’s research activity was deemed to be of international standing and over 50 per cent world leading or internationally excellent.

First class teaching

The standing of our postgraduate programmes is confirmed by the rigorous process of external assessment by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) and by a framework of external peer review. Our most recent Institutional Audit by the QAA in 2009 gave us the highest possible ranking, confirming the University’s academic standards and the quality of students’

learning opportunities. The majority of our departments which have undergone teaching quality assessments have achieved ‘excellent’ ratings.

An ideal location

Built on 130 hectares of beautiful parkland on the outskirts of the historic city of Norwich, our campus is one of the most innovative in the country, combining natural beauty with architectural flair. The campus has won more than 20 architectural awards and ongoing multi-million pound investment continues to enhance teaching and research facilities.

A safe and friendly campus

Virtually no part of our campus is more than a few minutes walk from anywhere else, and almost every student need is catered for on site – there’s a large food shop, a newsagent, a post office, two banks, two launderettes, a pharmacy, a medical centre, a Waterstone’s bookshop which is kept well-stocked with core texts, a travel agent, plenty of places to eat and drink and even an inspirational art museum – the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.

Sport for all

Our £30 million Sportspark on campus provides us with one of the finest sports complexes in Britain, boasting facilities unrivalled by any other British university. In a recent Independent Complete University Guide our sports facilities and services attained the highest overall ranking in any British university. Whether you’re an absolute beginner or a top performer, whether you play for fun or for competition, we hope you’ll take advantage of our outstanding facilities.

A BIGGER MBA

Norwich – the perfect location

The city boasts 1,500 historic buildings, including the largest walled medieval centre, two cathedrals, a Norman castle as well as stunning contemporary architecture such as the city’s newest centrepiece, The Forum, which houses the finest regional public library in the country. Everywhere you will see medieval and modern buildings coexisting in one of England’s most unspoilt cities.

Norwich is consistently voted one of Britain’s top cities for quality of life and prosperity with its rich variety of entertainment on offer.

The city has many nightclubs, cinemas and restaurants, and is home to more than 300 pubs and bars. ‘A church for every week and a pub for every day’ is a famous local claim for Norwich reflecting too the fabulous legacy of medieval churches which adorn almost every street corner of the city.

The city centre is only a 15-minute bus ride from the campus. In between, there’s the area called the ‘Golden Triangle’

where many of our students live and where you’ll find lively and cosmopolitan pubs, shops and cafés.

Shopping

Recent developments include the £275 million Chapelfield Shopping Centre, which confirmed Norwich’s place in the top ten shopping destinations*.

Norwich features a unique blend of independent stores, small specialist shops, major high street chains and the country’s largest six-day open-air market set amidst a maze of pretty medieval cobble-stoned lanes and alleys.

*Venuescore Survey 2011 ranked Norwich ninth out of 2,000 shopping destinations.

Sport

Whether you enjoy watching or taking part in sport, Norfolk offers choice for all – Norwich City’s promotion to the Premier League has made football at Carrow Road even more exciting, horse racing at Newmarket, motor racing at Snetterton, or even more leisurely activities such as fishing or family bike rides. Our Sportspark on campus is the largest fully integrated indoor and outdoor sports centre in Eastern England.

Arts and culture

The city centre has a wide variety of arts and entertainment venues, many of which offer discounts to students. For film lovers there are two multiplex venues and one of the finest art house cinemas in the East of England – Cinema City.

Norwich has six theatres including the Theatre Royal, the most successful regional theatre in the country, which puts on major touring shows, opera and ballet and the Maddermarket Theatre, which, to quote the actor Simon Callow, “performs a repertory that would shame the National Theatre.”

There are a number of museums and galleries in the city including the contemporary Norwich Gallery and the Castle Museum, which has touring exhibitions, as well as a gallery devoted to works by the Norwich School of Artists.

The perfect location

One of the best things about the University of East Anglia is its location, situated on the edge of both the city and countryside. The long Norfolk coastline is home to wildlife sanctuaries and beautiful beaches, as well as classical English countryside, interlaced with sleepy medieval villages, bustling market towns and stately homes. One of England’s most beautiful national parks, The Broads, is also right on our doorstep.

Norwich has good bus and rail connections to the rest of the UK and having its own airport ensures easy access to the Continent with connections to 200 cities worldwide.

With all the facilities of a major commercial and cultural centre, Norwich still manages to be a friendly, easy-going, and safe place to live, and despite its medieval architecture, the city has a vibrant and youthful outlook.
