CA Online Content

Research Team

The 24X7 CA Online Content Research team is dedicated to providing CA products with updateable content that enables you to improve the management of your IT

environment. Specifically the management of software inventory, software licensing and patch management.

Staying aware of available software

applications and patches, in addition to their relevance, impact, validation and

dependencies is complex and time consuming. This is particularly relevant today as IT

environments are becoming increasingly complex and businesses must keep pace with the high volume of changes, patches and upgrades necessary to keep their IT systems up-to-date, competitive and secure.

The CA Online Content Research team maintains a central repository of software metadata content. This repository of content enables the CA Client Automation family of technology to identify installed software assets, patch management and compliance audit. The CA Online Content Research team

is responsible for focusing on the following content areas:

Application Definition Signature Content: Applications processed by the CA Online Content Research Team will be ‘fingerprinted’ to produce application definitions. These application definitions are the foundation for performing software inventory which is used in licensing audits, usage reporting, patch level analysis and deployment planning. Patch Management Content: All vendor software patches supported are thoroughly researched, validated and normalized into a standard format. The patches are then published and made available to all CA Patch Manager customers, complete with the CA Online Content Research Team’s additional research metadata. The developed patch management content for targeted applications helps to mitigate risk and reduce the overall total cost of ownership of that application in your enterprise environment.

This document focuses on the Patch Management content provided to all CA Patch Manager users providing details on the supported applications, languages and content publication goals. In addition to the patch information being pushed to

Operating System Patch

Support

The following operating systems patches are supported in the languages specified. Individual patches are created by the CA Online Content Research Team for each security update published. Individual patches, depending on the type of patch, may or may not require a reboot.

Roll-Up Patches are created by the CA Online Content Research Team each time Microsoft releases patches on Microsoft’s ‘Patch Tuesday’ each month. Patches

contained in the roll-up patches are security patches only. The CA Online Content Research team associates each published patch and ‘rolls’ them into one single patch bundle for CA Patch Manager users. When applying a roll-up patch, only one reboot is required with the ability to ensure that already installed patches are not re-installed.

Internationalization/

Localization

The CA Patch Manager Console is available in English, French, German and Japanese. The metadata associated with each patch is available in English only. Patches for the specified operating systems and applications detailed in this document are supported for the languages specified.

Patch Types

Individual Patches: All Microsoft security patches are made available individually and can be processed and distributed individually by the CA Patch Manager administrator. CA Windows Full Security Roll-Ups: This is a single roll-up software package published by the CA Online Content Research Team and includes Microsoft software security patches for the operating systems and Microsoft Office application. Localized operating system roll-up patches include Microsoft Office security patches for English and the localized language for the operating system. There are times when a full roll-up patch may not include all patches. Patches not typically included in a full roll-up patch include application server patches and software developer tools (e.g., Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Visual Studio 2003). Any patches not included in the full roll-up package will be available as an individual patch for distribution.

CA publishes one roll-up for each supported operating system/language and supporting one reboot per patch package when possible. Employing the CA published roll-up package technology reduces the number of reboots required by the end systems and allows the administrator to reduce the time required to perform monthly patch management

distribution with minimal end user interruption.

CA Windows Delta Security Roll-Ups: This is a single roll-up software package published by the CA Online Content Research Team and includes one roll-up for each supported operating system, Microsoft Office and

language. The delta roll-up packages includes only those new Microsoft security software patches for that specific ‘Patch Tuesday’. The delta roll-ups result in a smaller patch
