5DT Unveils Artificial Intelligence Operator Behavior Improvement System
MINExpo 2021, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Release Date: Monday, September 13, 2020
5DT (Fifth Dimension Technologies), a machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) pioneer, will today unveil their state-of-the-art Operator Behaviour Improvement System.
The system, coined DriveVUETM, forms part of 5DT’s VUETM range of machine learning and artificial intelligence products.
The DriveVUE™ System improves driver behaviour with a Monitor-Correct-Reinforce process, as follows:
- Monitor the driver continuously
- Correct the driver immediately (in real time)
- Reinforce correct driver behaviour after trips and during downtime.
The DriveVUE™ System offers a vehicle fleet operator the following benefits:
• Improved Driver Safety • Lower Exposure to Accident Risk
• Increased Driver Engagement • Reduced Maintenance Costs
• Better Drivers • Improved Driver Motivation
• Direct Access to Driver Behaviour Analytics • Reduced Fleet Operations Costs The DriveVUETM device is about the size of a mobile phone, but it is thicker, as shown below.
The DriveVUETM Device
The DriveVUE™ device is typically mounted behind the rear-view mirror of the vehicle, as shown below.
The inward-facing camera (CabCam) is pointed at the driver and other cab occupants. The outward- facing camera (RoadCam) is pointed at the road.
Positioning of the DriveVUETM Device in the Cab A typical CabCam view is shown in the following image:
Typical CabCam View
The following behaviours are typically monitored with the CabCam:
• Mobile Phone Use (Talking & Texting)
• Drowsiness
• Seat Belt Off
• Eyes Off Road
• Blind Spot & Mirror Checks
• Not Wearing PPE
A typical RoadCam view is shown in the following image:
Typical RoadCam View
The following behaviours are typically monitored with the RoadCam:
• Following Distance
• Running Stop Signs
• Running Traffic Lights
• Overtaking on Barrier Lines
• Detection of Pedestrians
Apart from the CabCam and RoadCam, the DriveVUETM device is also fitted with a range of other sensors. The following behaviours are typically monitored with the other sensors:
• Speeding
• Aggressive Driving
• Aggressive Braking
• Aggressive Cornering
On the technical level, the DriveVUE™ System consists of the DriveVUE™ device, a cloud-based server, a cloud-based database and a range of web applications, as shown in the following image.
Technical Layout of the DriveVUETM System
The DriveVUE™ device includes the following:
• Edge Processor • Two Cameras (CabCam & RoadCam)
• Global Positioning System (GPS) Receiver • 9-Axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)
• Global System for Mobiles (GSM) Transceiver (3G, 4G, LTE)
• Microphone • Display
• Speaker
Powerful patented artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, running on the edge processor, detect incorrect driver behaviours immediately. The DriveVUE™ device then provides real-time feedback to the driver by means of alarms and voice commands. The DriveVUE™ device “speaks” to the driver and provides him/her with commands on how to correct behaviour. For example, if the driver uses his/her mobile phone while driving, the DriveVUE™ device will tell the driver to “Stop using mobile phone”. As soon as the driver stops using his/her mobile phone, the DriveVUE™ device will courteously respond with a
“Thank you”.
Incorrect driver behaviours are uploaded to the cloud-based server and stored on the cloud-based database.
The DriveVUE™ System offers easy-to-use web applications to enable a fleet operator to get a pulse on what is happening in their fleet, as show in the following image.

In terms of reinforcing driver behavior, the system offers a wide variety of mobile phone mini lessons that the driver can experience after trips or during downtime while waiting. These lessons reinforce the driver improvement experience.
The driver may go on a self-directed journey of learning exploration, covering topics like DriveVUE™
system use, vehicle inspections, safety, driving, and also soft skills like how to best handle aspects like road rage.
The DriveVUE™ system may also subject the driver to specific mini lessons, delivered on his/her mobile phone, based on driver behaviour during a specific trip. For example, if the driver exceeds the speed limit during a trip, he/she can expect a mini lesson on speeding to come his/her way after the trip.
DriveVUETM is part of 5DT’s VUETM range of machine learning products. Other emerging products in the VUETM stable includes:
- ReVUETM AI Enhanced Image Post-Processing System - SimVUETM Simulator Occupant Evaluation System
- ScreenVUETM Video Wall & Baggage Scanner Operator Evaluation System - FeverVUETM Covid-19 Temperature Screening System
- AdVUETM Targeted Advertising System
“We are extremely excited about the evolution of our machine learning product range. We have very innovative solutions and we are now applying these solutions to real world problems. We can now evaluate and train operators continuously during operations. This enables us to finally close the training loop. DriveVUETM is indeed a full-time in-cab training coach!” said Paul Olckers, CEO of 5DT.
According to Martin Schehle, COO of 5DT, “This is AI in action helping drivers and operators to be safer, more productive and less destructive!"
A fully operational DriveVUETM system is available for online video demonstrations from 5DT’s offices.
