PRESIDENTS CORNER – July 2020
By Wiley BowmanNATIONAL DIRECTOR REPORT
By Patricia VoynaThis is a difficult report to share. I want to thank all that responded so quickly to the survey, so I could vote the way the club wishes. Below is my response to all the Executive board. “I vote not to accept the budget. My club wants to keep FMCAssist.
Also, as a National Director, because what is happening in the world, no raises or 401K matches this year.
If you want to cut the staff in half in the magazine, would be OK with the 4 left to take 8 weeks to ready the magazine. That's every other month.
If we have no money, how are we going to refund the $25.00 to those that paid $75.00?
Bottom line, I have been charged to vote no on the present budget and to keep FMCAssist.
Patricia Voyna National Director Peach State Travelers F#74670D”
“Now as SEA-VP-GA, I sent out questioner to all my clubs. As of today, I have received 156 emails back with votes. 80.2% want to keep FMCAssist
Patricia Voyna SEA-VP-GA F#74670D”
“P.S. by the way, the email address given us to vote is not a valid email, it was kicked back as undelivered.
Thanks, Pat”
In last months newsletter I wrote, “Waiting for our mailing since we will not have our meeting in Lincoln, Nebr. because of Covid-19, it has been canceled.” As of today, the National Directors will not receive a mailing with the budget and a vote. The Executive Board is acting to be our official vote to accept or reject the budget. All the National Directors can do is express their club desires.
As of today, Peach State Travelers have voted 63.2% to keep FMCAssit. The whole state of GA. Combined is 80.9%. I have found many RVers don’t know that FMCAssist covers you in a car, on a ship, overseas, as long as you are over 100 miles away from home base (0 miles if full timers) I know at Thanksgiving and Christmas we are over 100 miles from home in the car visiting family.
Maybe next month I will have more information. Thanks for your help.
Don’t forget, Please, sign the FMCA waver sheets if attending a rally. At this time FMCA is not insuring our rallies. If you do not sign one, you will not get credit for the rally. Please give sheets to the rally hosts and they will give them to the secretary to be kept as record.

Independence Day Reflections
by Bob Weithofer, Military Veterans Chapter President Independence Day (the Fourth of July) celebrates the founding of our country. It celebrates the Signing of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress which occurred on July 4, 1776. The Congress had actually voted for independence two days prior but it took those two days to draft the actual Declaration. Of course, the signing didn’t make us a separate nation. It took the drafting and signing of the Constitution and the eight-year War of Independence, which cost over 30,000 American lives, to accomplish that.
Various local celebrations occurred starting in 1777 but it took until 1870 for the U.S. Congress to approve Independence Day as a Federal Holiday. So this year we are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the official recognition of the importance of this day.
This is a day to celebrate everyone who has contributed to the founding and the on-going growth of our country. Of course, we first think of ALL VETERANS and our current service men and women; they fought to establish this country and continue to fight to defend it. But, that is only the beginning of those to be celebrated. We are celebrating everyone who has contributed and continues to contribute to making and sustaining the country we all enjoy. We, Chapter members, have all made a
contribution by serving in the armed forces, but EVERY citizen has contributed in large or small ways. We should be celebrating all of them.
Once again, we are faced with a different celebration for this day than in the past. Most traditional celebrations of parades and firework displays have been canceled, but we still can and MUST celebrate the founding of this great country. Our celebrations may be smaller and involve only immediate friends and family, but the reason for the celebration is just as
appropriate!
We are living through a challenging time, but our country is responding to the challenges and WILL come out the other side
better. These times of change are some of the most important periods in our lives and will become history. And if we read our history story, we will see the end results have always been that the citizens of this great country, and that WILL include us, have grown better.
Celebrate, Be Safe and Safe Travels wherever you are!

One of my walking buddies was in Japan when the tsunami hit. She talked about the fly problem they had after tsunami. She shared a recipe with me as we have been bombarded with flies even with the store bought fly catchers and they STINK! With one small bottle last night the flies headed to the bottle. My friend was surprised it worked so quickly, we still had some flies but nothing like before. I’ll be making a few more bottles. She used a hard plastic bottle, cut small windows about the size of your pinky nail. She left the flap and just pushed it up. The recipe is equal amounts of vinegar, wine, and sugar.

This ex-airliner could be your very own RV!
Now, this here is a cool RV! No, you say, it’s just an old airplane without wings and engines. Well, either way you are right: It’s an airplane that doesn’t fly, but inside it has just about everything a regular RV has. You even drive it from the cockpit, where there are two steering wheels. So you can drive it from both seats. This most unusual RV is for sale right now on eBay for $99,000 and change.
Yes, it’s definitely a fixer upper
It’s a rescued 54-foot long 1957 Convair 240 airplane turned into motorhome with full amenities. The fellow who restored it, named Jason, named it “Andromeda” after the Ethiopian princess of Greek mythology. Jason took out the undercarriage and replaced it with the inner-workings of a Pace Arrow motorhome. It’s built on a heavy-duty diesel chassis with International diesel engine.
It’s off-grid ready, powered by 50-amp landline plus generator and solar power, so you can live in this sustainably. Enjoy a few drinks in your personal Jacuzzi in the living area inside the main body of a real retired aircraft. “Andromeda” is registered with the state of California as a motorhome.
Bunk beds are located behind the cockpit. It sleeps 4. And there’s a bathroom and kitchen. What more could you want? Okay, there’s a microwave. And there are all kinds of dials, gauges and ’50s-era airplane controls to play with.
This beauty can cruise down the freeway at a speedy 65 mph.
$99,999.99 But don’t try to fly it. Nothing doing on that.

How to Clean Your Cookie Sheets
Cookies are always fun to make and eat, but sometimes the clean-up isn’t very fun! If your cookie sheets are looking like they’re ready for the trash, don’t toss them yet! We’ve got the magic cleaning recipe to make them look shiny and new!
Cookie sheets are one of those things that seem impossible to clean. Oil and grease get stuck to them and are hard to get off. Before you give up and toss them out, try our cleaning recipe! What you will need: baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.
How to make it
Sprinkle baking soda all over the pan, then hydrogen peroxide, and then add more baking soda. Leave it to do its magic for 2 hours. When the two hours are up, prepare to be amazed! Your pan should look as good as new! Simply wipe the baking soda away, no scrubbing required!
They Walk Among Us! ...
I was at the checkout of a local Walmart. The cashier rang up $46.64 charges.
I gave her a fifty dollar bill. She gave me back $46.64. I gave the money back to her and told her that she had made a mistake in MY favour.
She became indignant and informed me she was educated and knew what she was doing, and she returned the money again. I gave her the money back -- same scenario!
I departed the store with the $46.64. They Walk Among Us! ...
I walked into a Starbucks with a
buy-one-get-one-free coupon for a Grande Latte. I handed it to the girl and she looked over at a little chalkboard that said 'buy one-get one free.' "They're already buy-one- get-one-free," she said, "so I guess they're both free."
She handed me my free lattes, and I walked out the door. They Walk Among Us! ...
Silly Tourist Questions
We work camped at an amusement park on the water rides one summer. Despite the large signs at the entrance and along the walkways to the ride: “This is a wet ride. You WILL get wet” and despite riders coming off the ride in various states of wetness, riders-to-be would still ask, “Will I get wet on this ride?” We finally decided to have some fun and we would answer, “We are trying something new this year – dry water.” Some would come off the ride, wet, and exclaim, “You said it was dry water!”
8 helpful RV Lifestyle Tips
by Mike WendlandJennifer Wendland
We get lots of ideas and tips sent in by our audience. Some are too short for a full-length report, but still useful. We’ve saved all the tips you have sent us this year and by combining a bunch of them together, we’ve got a great report.
Here are 8 RV tips that will make your life on the road and at camp a little easier.
1) Wrap a wet paper towel around a bottle and toss it into the freezer. In 15 minutes, it will be almost completely ice cold. 2) Use Doritos as a fire starter. Really. They burn better than crumbled up newspaper.
3) Freeze green grapes to chill a class of white wine down without watering it down.
4) Put a small glass of water in the microwave when you warm up pizza to keep it from getting chewy
5) Save your empty Chapstick containers for an emergency cash stash. Take our the little plunger push up thing and you can store some rolled up bills in it for an emergency stash you leave in the RV.
6) If your RV has a slide out, use cut a length-long slice of a swimming pool noodle and put that over the sharp edges so you won’t hurt yourself if you accidentally bump into it at camp. 7) Get a small dry erase board and use it to write down the name of the campground, the phone number of the campground, the address and your campsite spot number. In case you need to call emergency help, this will save you lots of time in talking with police of emergency dispatchers.
8) Rub an onion on your barbeque grill to keep things from sticking on it.
So there you go. Hope those tips come in handy!

Joke of the Week
Little Known Facts About the Interstate Highway System Author : Russel Micnhimer in Education
Did you know that if you tell me the number of the Interstate you are on I can tell you whether it runs north and south or east and west? That the side of the sign the smaller sign with the exit number is on will tell you whether the exit is on the left or right? Many RVers drive almost exclusively on the Federal Interstate Highway system without giving much thought as to what it is that is making their travels smoother. Here are some interesting facts about that system; some of them actually might have practical value.
Did you know, for instance, that the system was built in part to increase the country's ability to survive a nuclear attack? In 1956, President Dwight Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956. The bill created a 41,000-mile “National System of Interstate and Defense Highways.” Today that system is more than 46,000 miles long. And while it has never been used for evacuation from nuclear attack, it has proved the validity of the concept in evacuations from several natural disasters. It is designed so that, if necessary, traffic may be directed to move in all lanes in one direction.
Initial funding for the system came from an increased gasoline tax—from two cents to three cents a gallon that went into a non-divertible Highway Trust Fund. Every state owns the sections within its borders and is responsible for maintaining and enforcing traffic laws in its portion. The section that has claimed “the largest pothole in the country” award is on I-75 outside Detroit. In 1979 the final section of the Canada to Mexico Interstate 5 was dedicated near Stockton, California. In 1986 the final section of the coast-to-coast I-80 (San Francisco,
California, to Teaneck, New Jersey) was dedicated on the western edge of Salt Lake City, Utah, making I-80 the world's first contiguous freeway to span from the Atlantic to Pacific Ocean and, at the time, the longest contiguous freeway in the world.. At the dedication it was noted that coincidentally this was only 50 miles from Promontory Summit, where a similar feat was accomplished 120 years before with the laying of the golden spike of the United States' First Transcontinental Railroad.
Initial cost estimate for the interstate system was $25 billion over 12 years; it ended up costing $114 billion, taking 35 years to complete. Estimates for building today to construct a new 2-lane undivided road – about $2-$3 million per mile in rural areas, about $3-5 million in urban areas. To construct a new 4-lane highway — $4-$6 million per mile in rural and suburban areas, $8-$10 million per mile in urban areas.
What are we driving on? On average there is nearly three million tons of concrete in a mile of Interstate. In comparison, there are 6.6 million tons of concrete in the Hoover Dam. . Of course there are many specifications for the construction of the highways. Several urban legends about the system, for instance that it is designed for aircraft landing every ten miles or curves are required every so many miles, are simply not true.
The highest in altitude is 11,158 feet at the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado. The lowest on land is -52 feet in California and underwater -103 feet in Maryland. The heaviest traveled is I-405 in Los Angeles with an estimated 374,000 vehicles per day. Think about that next time you are stuck in heavy traffic! The Longest (east-west): is 3,020.54 miles (I-90) from Boston, Massachusetts, to Seattle, Washington.
Texas is the state with the most interstate miles within its borders, 3,233.45 miles.
How are Interstate Highways numbered?
Although there are exceptions, in general the numbering system for primary routes is, east-west highways are assigned even numbers and north-south highways are assigned odd numbers. Odd route numbers increase from west to east, and even-numbered routes increase from south to north (to avoid confusion with the U.S. Highways, which increase from east to west and north to south), though there are exceptions to both principles in several locations.
Auxiliary Interstate Highways are circumferential, radial, or spur highways that principally serve urban areas. These types of Interstate Highways are given three-digit route numbers, which consist of a single digit prefixed to the two-digit number of its parent Interstate Highway. Spur routes deviate from their parent and do not return; these are given an odd first digit.
Circumferential and radial loop routes return to the parent, and are given an even first digit.”
What about mile post markers?
On one- or two-digit Interstates, the mile marker numbering almost always begins at the southern or western state line. If an Interstate originates within a state, the numbering begins from the location where the road begins in the south or west. Exceptions exist for Interstate Highways that used segments of roadway that were built prior to Interstate Highway standards being formalized and were grandfathered into the system. Exit numbers correspond to Interstate mileage markers in most states. Many northeastern states label exit numbers sequentially, regardless of how many miles have passed between exits. States in which Interstate exits are still numbered sequentially are Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont; as such, five of the main Interstate highways that remain completely within these states (87,88, 89, 91, and 93) have interchanges numbered sequentially along their entire routes.
Next time you really need one, remember, there are more than 1,214 rest areas (http://www.interstaterestareas.com/) , so one is bound to be coming up soon.
