Presidents Message for August 2021

It is hard to believe we are into July, with the blazing heat, and yet we have the coolness of our clubroom to come and enjoy on Tuesday mornings with friends, fun, conversation, and laughter. Portraits on Thursday afternoons and any classes or workshops you may already be involved in. If no events or classes are going on, please grab one of your friends in the club and enjoy the

room's coolness to paint.

New classes in August with Ruth Little addressing the composition of the painting. Third in a four-part series of learning the fundamentals of drawing, color, composition, and putting to-gether what you have learned in each four-week session.

Paint in oils with Bruce Cody continues on the 3rd and the 10th of August.

We have good news on the instructor front as well. We have engaged another watercolor instruc-tor, Sue Nuhn. She is exceptionally qualified and will begin in October 2021. Her information is on the website on the instructor page; please take a look.

We have also engaged a pastel instructor Patti Hoffert; she is another well-qualified

in-structor we are fortunate enough to bring to our club. She will begin in October when she re-turns to Arizona.

We are looking into setting classes beginning in October for everyone with new classes and fun things to look forward to. Our card workshops are successful and fun! Join us for excel-lent instruction; it is more than worthwhile. View the calendar on the website for up-to-date in-formation so you can make your plans accordingly. Also, don't forget to put our first in-person meeting on your calendar for October 4th. A chance to meet your board, the committee

Chairpeo-ple, and the instructors. More information will follow.

Upcoming in the Fall is the Arts and Craft Show at Sundial, so paint, paint, paint and

en-ter the show with your creations. A fun time with lots to see. We need volunteers for the show. Please contact Peggy Schutte Juneau at [email protected] for information and help our club by volunteering your time; she is our competent and capable chair for this event. You will not regret it.

Have fun this month, keep as cool as you can with this heat, come to the club, and paint with a friend.

Palo Verde Artist of the Month, August 2021 - Eileen Moore

A native of Montreal, Quebec, Eileen's professional life began as a teacher of English as a foreign language. After moving to the US, she entered the busi-ness world in finance, the dairy industry and was a technical writer for a government agency in El Paso, Texas. Eileen's work has taken her into five states before retiring to Sun City in 2015.

Her recreational interests were primarily in music until retiring. Then, she took a class in sketching, and thanks to a great teacher, surprised herself by producing a recognizable image of a friend and was stunned when friends encouraged her to continue. When they discontinued the sketching class, Eileen considered writing but gravitated to making jewelry instead, forming her own compa-ny and selling her work at local craft shows and markets on the weekends. She was surprised that she had become more interested in collecting the pretty, shiny bling than selling them when she re-tired.

On moving to Sun City in November 2015, Eileen decided to make beads in clay but lost enthusi-asm, so she began taking art classes in 2018, entered her first show in 2019, and won a second-place ribbon, plus the piece sold. Eileen works primarily in watercolor, colored pencil, alcohol inks, and

graphite but has been intrigued by the effect of line and wash. Lately, she has been experimenting

with watercolor crystals by Brusho and Bister. She was always an experimenter, and she enjoys try-ing somethtry-ing new.

Eileen states, "While what I play with may not be new to the artistic world, it is new to me. I love to produce pieces on black backgrounds and have had success in exhibits. Lately, my art has been more impressionistic. I have begun to combine traditional media with non-traditional surfaces, such as painting a seascape on copper with alcohol ink. Was it successful? That is up to the viewer, but I enjoyed creating it. It was fun, and isn't that what we all want? A bit of fun?"
