COACH CELENTANO ON PLAYTIME

“One of the best questions I get asked by recruits and their parents is,

‘What’s the difference between the club ball she’s playing now and playing for you on the next level?’ Well the answer is layered; there’s a number of fairly substantial differences, but I think the one that’s the most jarring has nothing to do with volleyball really and is actually the playtime model.

In club it’s pay for play. In college it switches, where we may be compensating you via a scholarship to perform. So let’s break that down a bit further.

Club has become a very expensive venture, so with families paying thousands of dollars to train and travel with the goal being increased recruiting exposure, club rosters tend to be small: 9-12 people. Sitting on the bench is hard enough, now add the fact that mom and dad paid

$2,000 to watch you watch at a given tournament and that’s a recipe for unhappiness.

Well fast forward 3 years to your freshman year and you walk in to Mount Olive’s gym just so excited to get started. You look around and now the team is double your club roster (seriously, I have 21 people on my team this year). You went from guaranteed playtime as 1 of 2 middles to now being 1 of 4 with two 22-year-old seniors as your competition, and if your production doesn’t get you consistently in the top-2 you may never see the court. And your college coach’s job retention relies on winning games, so if you’re not their best bet to win, forget the you “may” not play, you will not play. That tends to be very jarring to a lot of club players.

So what does that mean for Edge? We are about development.

Everyone is paying to be here, thus everyone will have opportunities to play and develop within more pressurized competition. “Opportunities to play” does not equate to equal playtime because we are also invested in our players learning performance metrics and how to compete for their playtime when that model changes to a complete meritocracy, rosters sizes double, coach cares primarily about their job retention, and thus truly earning playtime is the new reality. We don’t want that freshman year to be a complete shock to the system.

Providing opportunities to play and opportunities to win is our mission, and that’s not an incredibly tough balance the way that we strategize our line-ups. And we believe that any parent paying thousands of dollars to have their daughter develop and have a chance to play at the next level (if that’s her goal and completely fine if not) can appreciate this mission. With this point there’s a couple things parents tend to struggle to reconcile:

(1) Winning and our best line-up are not mutually exclusive meaning that we can win matches without always playing who you perceive to be

“the best” on the team. Thus providing opportunity.

(2) The opposite is true. We may lose matches playing those that have performed the best on the team up to that point in a season, and fluctuating the line-up throughout a day tends not to be the reason for that. The reason is more likely that the other team was better or at that point in time performed better. Our best just didn’t win, it happens.”

“Our top priority at Edge is development and growth for each individual player, and there's a lot that goes into creating a training environment that is competitive, motivating, and challenging for us to achieve that growth.

A piece of that positive training environment has to be commitment from the players. Club volleyball works best when the members of the team have the shared goals of getting into the gym at every opportunity, hungry to learn, pushing each other, competing hard, etc.

So just as a reminder our teams are projected to do the following and thus we want our families and players prepared for this type of team commitment:

(1) A season that starts in November and extends through June/early July (exception is the 18s who will finish in May)

(2) Two to three, 2+ hour practice sessions per week

(3) Numerous multi-day, overnight, and out-of-state travel trips to attend tournament competition"

COACH PAULK ON COMMITMENT

"Edge started out as a club owned and operated by professional coaches as opposed to business people in order to ensure that the product to the girls and their families was more about volleyball and development than about filling teams in order to make money.

So in keeping with our brand and original philosophy Edge in its 4th season, 2020/21 took on a ‘Master Coaching’ approach where our 3 directors, all 3 NCAA head coaches, trained and conducted the practices for all our teams. This change was made to further our mission in providing the best opportunity for development to all of our players.

In addition, it increased continuity among the teams, where the 14s are being asked to do the same skills, techniques, and tactics as our 18s (with slight variation). The other huge benefit is that it allowed us to better prepare and train the other excellent members of our coaching staff. So by our other head coaches operating under a Master Coach we’re more easily able to dialogue about needs in practice, drill structure, line-up decisions, etc. It was a huge success this past year and it’s how we’ll continue to grow our staff and thus our club whilst ensuring quality coaching and development for everyone.”

COST EFFECTIVE

Scheduled quality competition, while seeking low-cost tournament locations and avoiding stay-to-play events in order to give parents control of their lodging and dollar.

Especially in this year which may include more unknowns than ever we want to give families ultimate control of their dollar and their daughter’s safety.

Our cost includes 3 practices per week throughout the entire season beginning the week of November 8th. The following page details the practice calendar of where and when your daughter will train. In addition in 2020/21 we implemented a Master Coaching model and training partnerships among teams. Jody on our cover sheets explains with a bit more detail why we opted for that model and effective it worked last season.

HOW WE TRAIN

Carolina Edge will ensure the filming of multiple matches per day at all events in order to post on the team’s HUDL site. The girls through HUDL will be able to create profiles and highlights to send to college coaches from the live game footage.

Dues include gym rental, coach salaries, equipment, tournament entry fees, administrative costs. Dues do not include uniform and travel/lodging due to the rising cases with the delta-variant. We desire for our parents to control their daughter's health and wellness as much as possible and for another season we do believe family travel is best in order to keep entire teams off buses, airplanes, and hotel rooms together thus reducing the likelihood of entire teams needing to quarantine.

*A payment schedule and uniform costs will be provided upon commitment.

It has always been our goal at Edge to schedule quality competition while seek low-cost tournament locations and avoiding stay-to-play events in order to give parents control of their lodging and dollar. Thus if one family has points and status at Hilton properties, they would be free to book there as opposed to a designated team hotel. All national qualifiers are unavoidable stay-to-play events and thus we will provide a block and booking code to secure a room within our club and ensure the team remains eligible to participate, thus for these events booking outside of the block is not an option.

It also should be noted that this early tryout period does allow for some flexibility in adjusting the schedule since teams will be made before we are asked to register for events. Thus, once rosters are established, the tournament schedule will be evaluated with the families to ensure their ideal balance of cost, recruiting exposure, and volume.
