Dear Friends,

Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you! In Christ, we received the most beautiful valentine of all time.

By now, I am sure most of you have heard that the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the churches in California being able to hold indoor

services. The Supreme Court stated that State cannot prohibit indoor services, but for health reasons, they can limit the number of people and demand other health protocols.

The State’s guidelines say that a church building is limited to 25% of its capacity. For our church that would be 250 people. Also the church has to maintain previously stated safety protocols.

So, starting this weekend (February 13-14), we will be celebrating Masses inside the Church—maximum of 250 people. We will be observing the social distancing rules and the sanitizing protocols, as prescribed by the City, County, State, and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The only exception in the schedule will be the Sunday Spanish Mass at 1:00 pm, which will continue outdoors because of the size of the Hispanic community, and Ash Wednesday, February 17, 2021 (see below).

WEEKEND MASS AND CONFESSION SCHEDULE: Saturday Confessions: 3:00—4:45 PM (outside the church)

Saturday Masses: 8:30 AM, 5:00 PM (English) & 7:00 PM (Spanish) Sunday Masses: 6:00, 7:00, 9:00 (live streamed to homes, patio, parish hall), 11:00 AM, 1:00 (Spanish outdoors) and 5:00 PM

DAILY MASS SCHEDULE (inside Church) Monday—Friday: 8:30AM & 5:30 PM

DAILY CONFESSION SCHEDULE (outside the church): Monday and Wednesday: 9:00—10:00 AM

Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 4:00—5:00 PM

SOME HELPFUL REMINDERS

MASS ATTENDANCE

Since only a 250 people can be in the Church at any given time, rather than have people make reservations and take numbers, the parish has decided to do the following:

1) All people who desire to go to Mass in the Church can only

enter the church building by the front doors of the Church (Royal Avenue side)—all other doors will be locked with signs on them directing them to the front doors.

2) There will be SIGNS on the front of the church reminding the

people:

a. Only 250 people will be admitted

b. Must wear a mask (masks will be provided if people don’t

have one)

c. Sanitize hands with hand sanitizers at the doors.

d. Sit in designated areas to maintain social distancing.

e. At Communion, maintain social distance and receive

communion in the hand.

3) There will be sanitizers and extra masks at the front doors of the

church.

4) Ushers with masks will be at the front door to greet the

people. They will kindly ask each person if they have any cough or fever. If anyone does, they will be asked not to enter the

Church. The ushers also will make sure that everyone will be wearing a mask. Masks will be provided for them if they did not bring one.

5) The ushers will count the people entering. When the number

reaches 250, the ushers will offer the people three options:

a. Go to the patio on the west side of the Church where

chairs will be set up with proper social distancing and they can watch and listen to the Mass on a large screen TV; or b. Go to the parish hall where the Mass will be live streamed.

i. Again, ushers there will make sure

(3)

sit in chairs that are arranged for the proper social distancing; or

c. Sit in their cars and listen to the Mass on the radio (97.1

FM from the Church and 89.7 from the parish hall) and then drive up to receive communion at the end of the Mass 6) For the alternative locations, an E.M. will bring communion to

the people at communion time.

PLEASE COME EARLY

Please plan to arrive early. We recommend arriving 15 minutes early for Sunday Mass, and 15 minutes for daily Mass to ensure Mass can start on time. The doors of the Church will be closed and locked once 250

people have entered the Church.

LIMITED ENTRY INTO THE CHURCH

For Sunday Masses, only the front doors of the church building on Royal Ave. will be open as a point of entry and only 250 people will be

admitted. However, we do have alternative worship spaces (patio, parish hall or sitting in your cars).

ALTERNATIVE WORSHIP SPACES

If more than 250 people show up for Mass, they will be directed to go either to the patio on the west side of the Church where chairs will be set up with proper social distancing and the Mass will be live streamed on a large screen TV with sound; OR they can go to the parish hall where the Mass also will be live streamed on TVs. Or people can sit in their cars and listen to the Mass on the radio (91.7 FM from church and 89.7 from parish hall).

Again, ushers at both alternative places will make sure that everyone sanitize their hands and wear a mask. People will sit in chairs with the proper social distancing. For the alternative locations, an E.M. will bring communion to the people at communion time.

(4)

LIMITED RESTROOM FACILITIES

The restrooms inside of the Church will be available, but only in a case of urgent need. Please plan accordingly. All others can go to the parish hall and use those bathroom facilities.

SAFETY IS OUR TOP CONCERN

At all Masses, we will be strictly observing safety precautions, including:

1) The church has undergone a thorough cleaning and disinfecting process prior to opening.

2) The congregation at each Mass in the church building and the alternative locations will be limited to 250 people.

3) Face masks will be required (no one will be admitted without a face mask).

4) Proper social distancing inside and outside the church will be enforced.

5) We are cleaning the church and the alternative worship spaces after EVERY Mass. So, we will need everyone to leave promptly after service to allow time to do so.

6) For the safety of all, we are committed to following the

guidelines set for us by the City, County and State. These, together with directives from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, form the basis of our plan.

FOR THOSE WHO ARE IN THE HIGH RISK GROUP

Please note that Archbishop Jose Gomez's dispensation of the Sunday Mass obligation is still in effect for any person who does not feel

comfortable or safe attending Mass. In fact, anyone, who is not well or is in a high-risk group (those 65 years of age or older as well as those with preexisting medical conditions), should NOT yet return to Mass in the church. An option is that they can sit in their cars and listen to the Mass, then drive up to receive holy Communion..

We will live stream our Sunday 9 am Mass to those at home, those on the patio and those in the parish hall, and transmit on radio from

(5)

the church and from the parish hall (97.1 FM from the Church and 89.7 from the parish hall).

ASH WEDNESDAY

This coming Wednesday, February 17, 2021, is Ash Wednesday. It begins the great Season of Lent—the season of repentance and renewal.

Because of the anticipated larger crowds and the limited number of ministers to help distribute ashes, we will be holding all the Ash Wednesday Masses outside, in the north parking lot.

The schedule of Masses for Ash Wednesday is as follows: 6:00 am, 8:30 am, 12:00 pm, 4:00 pm (Spanish), 5:30 pm, and 7:00 pm (Spanish).

LENT

The parish hopes to make this Lent the best of our lives. To enhance your Lenten experience, we are offering you a variety of opportunities for grace.

1. Participate in the UNIVERSITY SERIES—the marvelous Lenten Adult formation program. It will be on-line this year because of Covid. To register, go to the

website: https://ventura.theuniversityseries.org/.

Ash Wednesday is the last day to pre-register for University classes

2. ENGAGED: The Knights of Columbus has purchased for the

parish a subscription to ENGAGED. Bishop Robert Barron

partnered with Flocknote to give daily reflections. You can receive these free reflections by registering with Flocknote by texting phone 84576, then send text STROSE. You can pick up a card with this information at Mass or on the website or in the bulletin.

3. FORMED: The parish renewed her annual parish subscription

to FORMED to allow every parishioner access to this incredible E-Library of many wonderful Catholic Bible Studies, talks, movies, etc. You can pick up a card at Mass with the information or find the info on the website or in the bulletin. FORMED will help you grow in the knowledge of your faith. To register:

At the end of Lent, you can donate the Rice Bowl and the money, through the parish, to the Catholic Mission program that sponsors this Lenten activity.

5. FAMILY LENTEN ACTIVITY: For your family, the parish

is sending you a PDF file with a list of spiritual things you can do as a family during the 40 days of Lent. Print out list of activities, cut them into strips, fold them up, and place them in a big bowl. Every evening at dinner during Lent, pull out one of the suggestions out, read it aloud, and then the members of the family will try to do that activity the next day.

6. CONFESSION: Go to Confession during Lent.

7. HOLY HOUR: Make a Holy Hour before the Eucharistic Lord

once a week.

8. DAILY MASS: Attend daily Mass.

9. CURRENT EVENT ARTICLE: Check out the Current Event

Section on the website to read George Weigel’s thought-provoking article: “From Christendom times to Apostolic Times.”

10. THE BEAUTY OF THE EUCHARIST: Be sure to

read the next installment of the “Beauty of the Eucharist,” as we continue to examine the Liturgy of the Word, in particular the First Reading and the Responsorial Psalm.

(7)

I pray that God will bless and protect you and your loved ones as we prepare to enter the great Season of Lent.

Yours in Christ, Fr. Joseph Shea
