Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time 3
PASTOR’S NOTEJanuary 31
st, 2021
It is with great sadness that I was not able to take a group of young people to the March for Life pro-test this year. In October I made the decision to not go as I sadly expected that our young people might be in physical danger if we went to the March in Washington DC. The freedoms we have as Americans in the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave are now being chal-lenged. As a U.S. Marine who gave 6 years of my life in service to our country, I am increasingly shocked at the direction our country is taking.
Blessed Mother Teresa confronted President Clinton on his pro-abortion stand at the National Pray-er Breakfast in 1994 and latPray-er took hPray-er pro-life mes-sage to the highest court in the land. Her lawyers filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court urging it to recognize the unborn child's inalienable right to life.
She urged the court to hear the case Alexander Loce vs. The State of New Jersey, which involves the issue of whether or not the unborn child is a human being entitled to 14th Amendment protection. Loce was
convicted of trespassing for attempting to prevent his fiancé from having an abortion.
Mother Teresa's petition is a powerful witness in defense of life. It includes the following passage:
"America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe vs. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted moth-ers against their children and women against men. It has sown violence and discord at the heart of the most intimate human relationships. It has aggravated the derogation of the father's role in an increasingly father-less society. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts--a child--as a competitor, an intrusion and an inconven-ience. It has nominally accorded mothers unfettered dominion over the dependent lives of their physically dependent sons and daughters. And, in granting this unconscionable power, it has exposed many women to unjust and selfish demands from their husbands or other sexual partners.”
"Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government," she said. "They are every human being's entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or sovereign.
The Constitutional Court of the Federal Repub-lic of Germany ruled: 'The unborn child is entitled to its right to life independently of its acceptance by its mother; this is an elementary and inalienable right which emanates from the dignity of the human being.' "Americans may feel justly proud that Germany in 1993 was able to recognize the sanctity of human life. You must weep that your own government, at present, seems blind to this truth."
I remember when Blessed Mother Teresa was standing next to President Clinton and this little wom-an spoke words more commwom-anding thwom-an the most pow-erful man in the world could conjure up that day.
How is it that we remain blind to the truth today? I believe that when God is taken out of the environment we live in, that his Grace is taken away from our inter-personal encounters which results in decisions that are more influenced by the devil and our own self-centered desires.
In our current political divide, we have those that support abortion and are going to even further extremes, as they are advocating for the killing of the children after birth. The governor of Virginia is on rec-ord stating that once the baby is born it is okay for the mother and her doctor to decide what to do. How can our political leaders so blatantly ignore the importance of the lives of the unborn?
We are in this position because many Pro-life Catholics just sit back and do nothing while the forces of evil are infecting the thoughts of many in our coun-try. I am saddened to even say Pro-life Catholics be-cause every Catholic should be Pro-life, but over 50% supported a Pro-choice Catholic in our last election. I fear for the end-of-life meeting with Christ for anyone who has supported the killing of over 62 Million of God’s little ones.
We celebrated the conversion of St. Paul this past week and prior to his conversion Jesus blinded him with a bright light. At the same time Saul heard from the sky— “Saul why are you persecuting my peo-ple”. I pray that a bright light will blind us too at this moment in salvation history and that we are finally able to hear the same words coming to us from Christ, refencing how we now routinely kill the unborn with-out understanding that they too are equally loved by their Creator.
Please pray for the protection of the lives of the unborn children that God has created to be born into our world. Let us also pray for the conversion of those in our country that support abortion rights--that God touch their hearts as he guides them to his truth. And finally let’s pray for those fighting for the rights of the unborn in the pro-life movement---that they remain steadfast in their beliefs and continue to find peaceful ways to continue the battle to save the lives of the most poor and vulnerable human beings---those in the womb of their mother. This issue has become political and that saddens me—this issue is a human rights issue and unfortunately we as a country are ignoring the rights of the unborn.
Until next week…
Fr. Tom

4th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties.”- 1 Corinthians 7:32
How much anxiety do we bring upon ourselves by constantly worrying about not having enough or attaining more things? God won’t necessarily give you everything you want, but He will provide everything you need. Try this – use the word “pray” instead of the word “worry” in the future. Then pray for things instead of worrying about them.
If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
