EPICS in IEEE:
Connecting Engineering to Community Service
Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) partners students with professionals and non-profit organizations to provide community service organizations with the technology they need to improve and deliver services and provide undergraduate students with educational experiences to broaden their skills.
Lights for the Enlightened
A joint effort between IEEE Smart Village and the Global Himalayan Expedition (GHE) brought electric lighting to remote populations in the Himalayan region of Northern India—including two Buddhist monasteries that date back to the 12th century.
Previously dependent on sooty kerosene lamps, the people in the mountain villages surrounding the monasteries now have more time to do work, as well as cooking and other chores. Students can study and read longer thanks to more consistent light sources. Streetlights also make walking between buildings safer. The installation at the Lingshed monastery even included a computer lab with a satellite Internet link.
Buddy the Dog Makes Friends for Life
Severely injured, one-year-old German Shepherd puppy Buddy was found abandoned outside of an animal care facility in early May 2018. In order to save Buddy’s life, his veterinary team opted to amputate the bottom half of his back leg but lacked the technology to fit him for a prosthesis that would grant him full range of motion.
That’s when IEEE-HKN Iota Delta Chapter and student volunteers from Stevens Institute of Technology came to the rescue, thanks to an EPICS in IEEE grant. The team set out to create a completely functional trans-tibial (below the knee) dog prosthesis and plans to showcase and demonstrate the prototype robotic prosthesis to K-12 students both in a classroom setting and in a summer camp program during a hands-on laboratory robotics session.

IEEE SIGHT:
Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology
IEEE SIGHT is a global network of groups consisting of IEEE members and volunteers who identify and address local problems by applying their technical skills and partnering with their local communities. What SIGHT Teams do: • Focus on sustainable solutions that make a long-term
difference in people’s lives
• Operate through local volunteers and partners working with local communities
• Prioritize success achieved through partnerships, starting with the community and extending to government
organizations, NGOs, schools, hospitals, companies and others • Value sustainability, so continuous training and education
are essential
While the SIGHT program was conceptualized in 2011, it was added to the IEEE Foundation family of funds in 2019. In just a short time, we have already kick-started funding for four projects, and the IEEE Foundation looks forward to supporting more SIGHT projects in the future.
