IMPROVING QUALITY AND SAFETY IN YOUR ENDOSCOPY UNIT

DECEMBER 10, 2015

Course Description

Quality in gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy matters. Translating quality concepts

into practice can be challenging, which is why ASGE has developed the

Improving Quality and Safety in Your Endoscopy Unit

course: to educate

physician and non-physician unit staff on how to create high-quality endoscopy

units. Through a mix of didactic lectures and interactive sessions taught by

leading experts in the field, participants will gain a greater understanding

of endoscopy unit quality and safety. The content of the course is dynamic,

addressing the fundamentals of quality and safe practice as well as emerging

trends and evidence. In addition to advancing your knowledge in endoscopy

unit quality and safety, you and your staff will be prepared to apply for the ASGE

Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program or renew your current participation.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, you will be able to:

• Identify ways to define and measure quality in endoscopy

• Describe techniques to make endoscopy more efficient while

maintaining safety

• Describe methods to improve patient satisfaction in endoscopy, including

improved doctor-patient communication

• Recognize the potential sources of infection from contact with various

body fluids, their transmissibility during gastrointestinal endoscopy, and their

susceptibility to potential disinfectants

• Specify measures for improving unit quality, including training and credentialing

for new procedures, quality assurance programs, sedation and monitoring, and

unit accreditation and re-accreditation

Target Audience

Practicing gastrointestinal endoscopists and surgeons, medical directors, nurse

managers, unit managers and allied professionals interested in advancing

their knowledge in endoscopy unit quality and safety. Units interested in

applying for the ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program or renewing their

ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Certificate are encouraged to send both

a physician and a non-physician manager to the course. Program eligibility

criteria require completion of this course by at least one unit representative

within one year of the program application.

• Understand CMS’ timeline for implementation of the Medicare Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS)

• Discuss emerging alternative payment models for GI practices that will eventually replace the current fee-for-service model

• Discuss, evaluate and analyze GI payer contracts. Understand the evaluation of payer rules, policies and obligations for your specific medical practice

• Discuss and understand the documentation requirements for Evaluation and Management Services, including proper leveling, “split shared” and “incident to” policies and time-based billing

• Evaluate and resolve specific coding issues regarding GI practice such as colonoscopy screening coding issues, determining average-risk versus high-risk patients and screening versus diagnostic procedures and multiple endoscopy billing

• Discuss and understand the importance of compliance plans and the roles of Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) audits, Zone Program Integrity Contractor (ZPIC) audits, Office of the Inspector General (OIG) and other government-sponsored billing and coding audit programs

• Implement coding strategies for new and emergent GI technology. Learn how to code for these technologies

• Implement GI billing and coding procedures regarding ancillary practices, such as pathology and anesthesia services, as well as new evaluation and management services, i.e., transitional care, chronic care coordination codes, telephone and online services and nutritional services
