Course Description
Quality in gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy matters. Translating quality concepts
into practice can be challenging, which is why ASGE has developed the
Improving Quality and Safety in Your Endoscopy Unit
course: to educate
physician and non-physician unit staff on how to create high-quality endoscopy
units. Through a mix of didactic lectures and interactive sessions taught by
leading experts in the field, participants will gain a greater understanding
of endoscopy unit quality and safety. The content of the course is dynamic,
addressing the fundamentals of quality and safe practice as well as emerging
trends and evidence. In addition to advancing your knowledge in endoscopy
unit quality and safety, you and your staff will be prepared to apply for the ASGE
Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program or renew your current participation.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, you will be able to:
• Identify ways to define and measure quality in endoscopy
• Describe techniques to make endoscopy more efficient while
maintaining safety
• Describe methods to improve patient satisfaction in endoscopy, including
improved doctor-patient communication
• Recognize the potential sources of infection from contact with various
body fluids, their transmissibility during gastrointestinal endoscopy, and their
susceptibility to potential disinfectants
• Specify measures for improving unit quality, including training and credentialing
for new procedures, quality assurance programs, sedation and monitoring, and
unit accreditation and re-accreditation
Target Audience
Practicing gastrointestinal endoscopists and surgeons, medical directors, nurse
managers, unit managers and allied professionals interested in advancing
their knowledge in endoscopy unit quality and safety. Units interested in
applying for the ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program or renewing their
ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Certificate are encouraged to send both
a physician and a non-physician manager to the course. Program eligibility
criteria require completion of this course by at least one unit representative
within one year of the program application.

Course Description
This ASGE course provides office management staff with the essentials needed
to effectively and efficiently manage a GI unit. Presented by GI practice
managers at the top of their field,
GI Practice Management 101
serves as an
introduction to GI endoscopy practice management best practices. Course
sessions will cover topics such as running a profitable endoscopy unit, achieving
efficiency in your office operations and managing and staffing the GI practice.
GI Practice Management 101 is designed to be highly interactive and provide
winning practical solutions that can be implemented immediately in your
practice. This course is perfect for those propelled into office management, new
to practice management or new to GI practice management.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, you will be able to:
• Recognize cost centers and profit centers for the typical GI practice
• Integrate ASGE and other clinical guidelines in your practice
• Perform rudimentary evaluation of ancillary services such as infusion or
histology/pathology
• Identify how to “right size” your office
• Develop an analysis (proforma) to determine whether a specific cost center
activity (pathology lab, infusion, capsule) is profitable
• Utilize mid-level team members to enhance the efficiency of your office or
hospital–based GI practice

Course Description
Designed to increase your practice proficiencies in coding and reimbursement, the 2016 Gastroenterology Reimbursement and Coding Update will help you prepare for 2016 GI endoscopy reimbursement changes. Expert faculty will show you how to continue operating as a high-performing business by sustaining your practice’s bottom line through efficient medical coding, payer contracting, endoscopy billing, and other topics and issues related to GI physician and facility reimbursement. This course will provide you with the critical information you need to know about CMS’ transition from a payment system based on fee-for-service to payment systems that assess physician performance and include alternative payment models for GI services. You and your team will receive the help you need to enhance your ability to manage your practice in this changing paradigm in GI practice management through use of new payment delivery models, accurate billing, coding, contracting and revenue cycle management.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, you will be able to:
• Implement all CPT changes affecting gastroenterology practice in 2016, become familiar with all new, revised and deleted codes for 2016 and review questions regarding 2015 code changes
• Resolve implementation challenges for all gastroenterology-specific changes for the ICD-9 to ICD-10 transition
• Understand CMS’ timeline for implementation of the Medicare Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS)
• Discuss emerging alternative payment models for GI practices that will eventually replace the current fee-for-service model
• Discuss, evaluate and analyze GI payer contracts. Understand the evaluation of payer rules, policies and obligations for your specific medical practice
• Discuss and understand the documentation requirements for Evaluation and Management Services, including proper leveling, “split shared” and “incident to” policies and time-based billing
• Evaluate and resolve specific coding issues regarding GI practice such as colonoscopy screening coding issues, determining average-risk versus high-risk patients and screening versus diagnostic procedures and multiple endoscopy billing
• Discuss and understand the importance of compliance plans and the roles of Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) audits, Zone Program Integrity Contractor (ZPIC) audits, Office of the Inspector General (OIG) and other government-sponsored billing and coding audit programs
• Implement coding strategies for new and emergent GI technology. Learn how to code for these technologies
• Implement GI billing and coding procedures regarding ancillary practices, such as pathology and anesthesia services, as well as new evaluation and management services, i.e., transitional care, chronic care coordination codes, telephone and online services and nutritional services
