Proof-Reading (Ref.:0101): Medical Tourism
A few months ago I went to a conference on Medical Tourism in Washington D.C. which caught my attention, so I would like to share what I heard there with you. Tourism and travel for medical purposes is a reality; in fact it has been happening for the last 80 years with people from all over the world travelling from their country to the US to receive care in places like Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital. However, many people in the US think that it is something new because now, for the first time, a larger amount of US citizens are travelling outside of the United States for their health care needs.
But first, is the name “Medical Tourism” the right one? The first thing that I learned at this conference is that no one likes to call it like this. Every speaker felt that the name was misleading and blamed the media for the wrong name, since many people combine tourism with medical care when travelling for minor procedures. Other speakers affirmed that Global Health Care or Medical Travel are better titles, if the future of the business is in large surgeries, as it is seen nowadays. What is a fact is that the industry was growing, and there is a great potential for the industry to explode, but a number of issues need to be resolved before this will happen. Currently the industry is made up of uninsured, or under-insured, individuals who are looking to treat their individual health care needs.
The industry will not truly realize its potential until it is able to attract the Health Insurance companies as well as the employers. Before the Insurance companies and employers, in large number, turn to Medical Travel, a number of key issues will need to be solved, and these key issues were brought up over and over during the conference. …
Another issue to consider is the continuity of care. Before and after someone travels, it is very important that they receive the proper care and, at the moment, this infrastructure is not set up. Though some doctors are embracing Medical Tourism as a way to get their patient’s care which was otherwise not available because of the cost, not every doctor sees it that way. Systems are under development, in which doctors are agreeing to take on the patients, and provide this care. For instance, pre-op screening that will be accepted by the receiving facility as well as the post-op follow up, long-term rehabilitation and disease management.
