Rotating Control Devices
“Under Pressure…In Control”Smith Services is an industry leader in providing Rotating Control Devices (RCD), also known as rotating heads. An RCD seals around the drillstring components, diverting dust, mud, air/gas, mist, foam or steam away from the rig floor. From conventional air, gas and geothermal drilling to to-day’s complex Underbalanced Drilling (UBD) and Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) projects, Smith Services has RCDs designed for the job. Smith products are backed by experienced operations and service personnel en-suring that the application, installa-tion and demobilizainstalla-tion are executed properly.
The stripper element is the critical component of the Smith Services RCD. This is the active barrier be-tween the fluids in the wellbore and the rig floor personnel. A stretch-fit seal is created by the stretch inter-ference fit between the kelly/drill pipe and the ID of the stripper ele-ment. This ensures a positive seal at all times. Seal reliability and stripper element life are maximized through the strict material quality and manu-facturing process controls used to build each Smith Services stripper element.
The Stretch-Fit Seal Advantage
Stretch interference fit around •
the drill stem components to seal 100 percent of the time
Stripper elements that are easily •
replaced at the rig
• Maintainable by the rig crew
• Seal that is not lost in the event of any type of hydraulic or elec-trical power disruption
• Seal that is enhanced in the pres-ence of wellbore pressure
Applications
Rig site safety is the main reason •
for utilizing an RCD. This piece of equipment enables drilling oper-ations to continue while isolating the drilling personnel from po-tentially harmful wellbore fluids and gasses
Conventional air, mist, foam and •
gas drilling require an RCD for the isolation and redirection of the wellbore discharge
RCDs protect the environment by •
directing potentially harmful well-bore fluids and gasses through the processing equipment on location, before being returned to the atmosphere
• Underbalanced and managed pressure drilling operations re-quire the use of an RCD to safely direct the wellbore flow through the necessary processing
equip-ment as drilling operations prog-ress. An RCD is required in all types of UBD & MPD operations, however, a good deal of planning must be done to ensure the right equipment and the appropriate stripper elements are selected
• Geothermal drilling requires an RCD designed to operate at high temperatures. High-temperature stripper elements are also neces-sary
• Drilling risks from problems such as lost circulation, fresh water flows or unexpected events from wildcat exploration wells can be mitigated with the use of an RCD to control potential influx
Note: These products, regardless of pressure ratings,
are diverters and not blowout preventers.
Note: The published test pressure ratings contained
herein pertain to the bearing section lower seal assem-blies only and do not apply to any of the stripper ele-ments. Further to this, Smith Services, a Business Unit of Smith International, Inc., does not guarantee, either expressed or implied, the pressure ratings published in this or any other printed materials.
The At Balance Automated Pressure Drilling Services provide a pressure management method which increases safety, enhances performance and reduces drilling costs. This revolutionary technol-ogy uses the Integrated Pressure Manager™ (IPM), which combines a high speed programmable system with a real-time hydraulics model to control bottomhole pressure with unmatched speed and precision. 1500 and 2500 Rotating Control Devices
The HOLD Rotating Control Device comes in two sizes: the HOLD 1500 and the HOLD 2500. They are both designed with rig safety and opera-tional reliability in mind. The hydrau-lically operated lock-down system eliminates the need to send person-nel below the drilling floor to release primary or secondary locking systems when installing or replacing the strip-per element. These elements can be changed independent of the bearing assembly, saving additional rig time and eliminating the need for excess inventory on location.
The HOLD Advantage

Remote Hydraulic Operation
The HOLD RCD enables the complete replacement of the stripper element without going below the rig floor to unbolt any primary or secondary locking bolts to unlock the clamp. The HOLD RCD offers a superior clamping system that is hydraulically actuated for both locking and unlocking. The driller operates all hydraulic systems from a control console installed con-veniently on the rig floor. The remote operated hydraulic clamp improves rig safety and decreases element re-placement time.

Complete hydraulic lock-down •
and release of the stripper ele-ment
Control console conveniently lo-•
cated on the rig floor
Fail-safe locked mechanism that •
requires hydraulic pressure to open
Safety Interlock System that •
prevents release of the seal ele-ment in the presence of wellbore pressure

Focus on HSE
The offshore kit option for the HOLD 1500/2500 is the only system cur-rently available which is in compli-ance with 100% zero environmental discharge. In the event of a stripper element failure, the released fluids are safely contained within the over-shot riser, preventing minor environ-mental incidents from impacting rig operations. The offshore kit is easily adapted to land applications where zero discharge compliance require-ments are in effect.
The HOLD RCD requires the High-Pressure Hydraulic Skid for rig site operation.
Pressure ratings have been determined through controlled laboratory test procedures. Due to the uncontrolled environment of well drilling opera-tions, Smith International, Inc., its Business Units, Agents and Affiliates make no warranty, either expressed or implied, on the pressure ratings contained herein. Smith International, Inc. does not, under any circumstances, recommend that its rotating drilling heads be used as primary blowout prevention equipment.

The HOLD Offshore Conversion Kit can be installed on either the HOLD 2500 RCD or the HOLD 1500 RCD bearing section as needed. The Offshore Conversion Kit modifies the top of the HOLD RCD to provide a custom flange at the top of the RCD. A typical installation would provide a top flange with a welded-on 24 inch OD Overshot Mandrel to engage the Overshot Packer for jack-up or tension-leg drilling platform installation, however, almost any configuration of equipment can be provided.
While the Offshore Conversion Kit is not designed to be a struc-tural member of the Marine Riser, it provides a fluid connection to enable flow through the RCD to
the diverter and bell nipple used in many typical marine installa-tions, and substantial side loads can be accommodated which help maintain RCD alignment with the rotary or top drive above.
A 16.8 inch minimum ID is re-quired above the RCD to allow installation of the stripper rub-ber elements. The maximum OD of the bearing assembly with the conversion kit installed is 30 inch-es, and it adds approximately 3 inches to the height of the RCD.

The Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU) is an important component of the HOLD®
1500/2500 and the RDH 2500®
Rotat-ing Control Devices (RCD). This unit pumps oil that lubricates and cools the bearing assemblies and delivers the required pressure to the inside of the high pressure seals, enabling them to hold up to 3,000 or 5,000 psi (static test pressure) wellbore pres-sure. The HPU is located away from the drilling floor, requiring a 110V electrical supply and an air supply from the rig.
The operational features of the HOLD High-Pressure HPU are:
Two large 75-gallon oil reservoirs •
Separate high-pressure and low-•
pressure lubrication systems
Built-in air compressor that au-•
tomatically engages if the rig air supply is disrupted
High-pressure lubricant system •
regulated by a mechanical system (electrical wiring not required be-low the rig floor)
Wellbore pressure sensor that sig-•
nals the high-pressure lubricant system to deliver measured pres-sure plus an additional 150 psi, ensuring a positive pressure dif-ferential across the seal face A seven-day chart recorder that •
maintains a continuous wellbore pressure record
A control console located on the •
rig floor that operates the clamp-ing system, and is independent of the High-Pressure HPU
Low Pressure Lubrication
Since the bearing assemblies in all Smith Services rotating heads are sealed, a low-pressure lubricator is a necessary part of the system. The lubricator does not have to be placed on the rig floor and only needs to be hooked to the rig air supply to oper-ate. The system is virtually mainte-nance free, requiring only occasional service from the rig crew to top off the oil in the reservoir.
The lubricators come in two types: Recirculating system for use with •
high-temperature applications Non-recirculating system for use •
in normal conditions and cold temperature applications

Stripper Elements
All Smith Services stripper elements are manufactured to strict mate-rial specifications and a proprietary compound formulation. Every batch of rubber is subject to multiple QA tests and verification prior to ing. The stripper elements are mold-ed under conditions of controllmold-ed and documented load weight, tem-perature, cavity pressure and cure time. Once elements are molded, documentation for the entire batch of stripper elements is reviewed by an independent rubber lab, complet-ing the QA process. Smith Services builds quality and reliability into each stripper element so that "when you are under pressure you are
in control.”
Stripper elements are passive seals that maintain a constant barrier between the atmosphere and well-bore. The inner diameter of stripper rubbers should always be smaller than the objects (e.g. drill pipe, tool joints) passing through to ensure sealing with zero wellbore pressure. The outer geometry of the passive
seal creates higher sealing pressure as wellbore pressure increases.
