1 I enjoy precepting NP students. May 17, 2010 9:30 PM
2 I do not have enough variety in the type of patients I see and this would not be the best learning environment for a generalist.
May 17, 2010 9:50 PM
3 Tend to pick students who I am already familiar with from previous work experiences.
May 24, 2010 6:27 PM
4 However I work only weekends May 25, 2010 2:00 AM
5 unable to give the time the student needs d/t increased employer demands and raising young children

6 only for last yr student May 25, 2010 12:54 PM
7 not currently practicing May 25, 2010 2:19 PM
8 I do all inpatient speciality work now--not likely to be a useful as a generalist would be
May 25, 2010 4:07 PM
9 not at this time May 25, 2010 8:14 PM
10 do not feel like I have enough experience to be a preceptor at this time. May 26, 2010 11:09 PM 11 I'm not sure what my role will be, probably changing. Not sure if that will make
this easier or harder to do. May be 100% palliative and not sure if that will be a fit for students.
May 30, 2010 12:26 PM
12 work hours and requirements by employer now make this very difficult as they would require me to repeat full exam/H & P and do my own dictation on every client seen-this is impossible to do and would make my hours at work even longer than the approx 55 hours weekly I already put in. I have precepted 5 NP students and will have to leave it at that
Jun 1, 2010 12:55 PM
13 too many comming thru these days and our own pt load is increasing Jul 10, 2010 1:39 PM 14 I don't feel like I have enough experience myself at this time. I may be interested
in the future.

1 Lack of productivity credit May 17, 2010 9:26 PM
2 Number of students inquiring. I have to turn down many students, as I only take one student a semester. I appreciate when the school or student contact me directly rather than mass email such as lit serve. I have not yet had a student who contacted me that way.
May 17, 2010 9:30 PM
3 As stated in number 8 May 17, 2010 9:50 PM
4 experience is very dependent on student/preceptor relationship May 18, 2010 12:39 PM
5 only been as NP for about 1 year. May 18, 2010 1:26 PM
6 My load is extremely light which may not be helpful to the student. Depends on the day.

7 I am new to Bellin and need to get more of an established routine before I add any changes to my level of responsibility
May 19, 2010 12:59 PM
8 Precepting in the neonatal field is so variable, it is difficult to plan for all experiences, for example transports, and admissions.
May 20, 2010 7:36 AM
9 Medicare guidelines require preceptor to examine and document on each patient in order to bill. This would require patient getting two exams. Our clinic enforces this.
May 24, 2010 11:46 PM
10 prefer to precept student interested in diabetic field and looking for job in NE wi May 25, 2010 12:54 PM 11 As of now, our organization requires that the preceptor repeat the exam in entirety
d/t medicare requirements and this rolls over to any appointment and insurance. This makes it near impossible to keep up and is not fair to the patient.

14 Very specific type of experience - not as useful for most students May 25, 2010 4:07 PM 15 it is too time sonsuming when I am expected to do an independent hx and CPX

17 Medical oncology is a very specialized area of medicine which may not as valuable during NP training as other areas of medicine such as adult, peds, geri, etc.

18 as above. I enjoyed precepting, but cannot do it any longer in the changing clinical environment that I work in

Response Count 6 answered question 6 skipped question 56 Response Text1 I am surprised at the interest in continuing with a Master's program when the thrust of advanced practice education is towards the Doctoral level. How about a doctoral degree in clinical practice?

2 All exams completed by students must be repeated by the preceptor in order to bill for Medicare services.
May 25, 2010 3:16 PM
3 Would be interested in the future once I gain more experience and figure out how to be more efficient with my patient load.
May 26, 2010 11:09 PM
4 I would love to precept, but unfortunately, with such a heavy patient load, I am afraid that I would not have enough time to spend with student(s) to be a good preceptor.
May 27, 2010 4:02 PM
5 Students need to practice as an RN for an adequate amount of time before getting an advanced degree. Preferably in a hospital setting. They need to have a clear understanding of lab values, disease processes, diagnostic testing, pharmacology and recognizing acutely ill adults and children. Students with a strong RN
background (usually hospital based) are the stronger students.
