-08 Drexel Dragons Basketball

James "Bruiser" Flint is in his seventh season as

Drexel's head coach. Flint has established Drexel

as one of the top programs in the CAA since

arriv-ing on the University City campus in 2001. The

Dragons have advanced to the postseason in four

of the last five years and have won at least 17

games four times. Flint picked up his 200th career

win on Jan. 2 against UNC Wilmington

Flint led the Dragons to 23 wins last year, the

most wins for a Drexel team since the 1995-96

season. Drexel finished 23-9 overall and won 13

road games, tying for the most in all of Division I.

The Dragons won at nationally-ranked Syracuse, at

Villanova and at Creighton in front of the largest

crowd ever to see a game in the state of Nebraska.

In addition, Flint became the first coach in Drexel

history ever to beat three Philadelphia Big 5 teams

in one season. He won his second NABC District Coach of the Year Award as the

Dragons narrowly missed out on an NCAA at-large berth.

A two-time CAA Coach of the Year, Flint's teams have won at least 11

confer-ence games five times. Flint has a 117-91 record at the school and an impressive

73-51 (.589) mark in CAA play. He has already moved into fourth place in career

wins at Drexel. Since his arrival, the Dragons have had the CAA Defensive Player

of the Year on four occasions, have had 10 All-CAA selections and nine members

of the conference's All-Defensive team.

Flint completed his third third stint with USA Basketball in July. Flint was an

assistant coach for the USA Under 19 National Team. He served under Jerry

Wainright from De Paul as the team competed in Novi Sad, Serbia. During the

summer of 2005, Flint was an Assistant Coach for the USA Under 21 World

Championship Team that played in Mar del Plata, Argentina. The team posted a

7-1 record. His first stint came as a court coach prior to the Global Games.

During the 2004-05 season, despite key injuries to a number of players,

Drexel had a 17-12 mark and a 12-6 record in the CAA. The Dragons, playing

without two injured starters, took MAC runner-up Buffalo to overtime on its

home court in the opening round of the NIT. It was the third straight season Flint

led a Drexel team to the postseason.

In 2003-04, Flint was named the CAA Coach of the Year after leading a team

picked to finish in a tie for fourth place to a second-place finish with a 13-5

league record. The Dragons won 12 of their last 15 regular-season games and

ished just one game behind Virginia Commonwealth. Overall, Flint's team

fin-ished 18-11 and advanced to the NIT for the second straight season. The Dragons

lost at Villanova in the first round.

In his second season, Flint returned the Dragons to the postseason for the

first time in six years. Drexel won 19 games and finished 12-6 in the CAA. The

Dragons won two games at the CAA Tournament and advanced to the

champi-onship game. Drexel lost in the finals, but was rewarded with a bid to the NIT,

only the sixth postseason appearance in the school's history.

Flint, who owns a 203-163 career record, returned home to his native

Philadelphia when he took over as Drexel's head coach on April 5, 2001. In his

first year, Flint led a team that was picked to finish ninth in the CAA to an 11-7

mark, tying them for third in the league. The Dragons finished with a 14-14

record. For his efforts, Flint was named the CAA Men's Basketball Coach of the

Year. Flint picked up his 100th career victory in Drexel's 68-65 win against UNC

Wilmington on Feb. 18, 2002.

Flint arrived at Drexel after a 12-year stint at UMass. He was an assistant

coach for seven seasons before becoming the school's 17th head basketball

coach. He was 86-72 at UMass (52-28 in Atlantic 10 play) and led three of his

teams to postseason play and was the NABC District I Co-Coach of the Year in

1998. Flint was the fastest coach in UMass history to reach 30 wins and was the

winningest first-year coach ever at UMass. He spent two seasons as an assistant

coach at Coppin State University before joining the UMass staff.

A 1987 Saint Joseph's graduate, Flint, 42, was a four-year letterwinner with

the Hawks. He was All-Atlantic as a senior and led the Hawks to the 1986 A-10

championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament as a junior. The Hawks also

made NIT appearances in 1984 and 1985. He was inducted into the Saint Joseph's

Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998 and graduated with a degree in financial

manage-ment.

Drexel is now in its seventh year in the CAA. Drexel, Delaware, Hofstra

and Towson joined the league after leaving the America East

Conference in 2001. Georgia State and Northeastern began play in the

CAA during the 2005-06 season. They joined George Mason, James

Madison, UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion, Virginia Commonwealth and

William & Mary.

The 2006-07 season marked the second straight year that the CAA

pro-duced a pair of NCAA teams and two NIT teams. VCU won the CAA

Tournament, while Old Dominion earned an

at-large bid. VCU knocked off Duke in the

first round of the NCAA before falling to

Pittsburgh in overtime. ODU was beaten by

Butler in the first round. Drexel and Hofstra

each advanced to the National Invitation

Tournament. The Dragons season ended

with a loss to ACC runner-up North Carolina

State, while Hofstra fell to DePaul.

During the 2005-06 season, George Mason,

an at-large team, defeated Michigan State,

North Carolina, Wichita State and UConn on

the way to the Final Four. UNC Wilmington

won the CAA Tournament and earned an automatic berth to the NCAA

Tournament, where they lost to George Washington in overtime.

Hofstra and Old Dominion each went to the NIT that season.

A few Drexel players are closing in on personal and

historic milestones, including the following:

Frank Elegar

*Now has 1,254 career points, which is 16th all-time at

the school. He has 131 blocks, which places him sixth

on the all-time list at Drexel.

*Grabbed his 600th career rebound at VCU and has

647 in his career, placing him 17th all time at Drexel.

Tramayne Hawthorne

*Is now 11th place with 125 career three-pointers and

needs 15 to move into 10th place.

*Is 16th in career steals with 105 and needs two to

move all the way into 13th place.

Scott Rodgers

*Is 10 assists away from reaching 200 in his career.

Drexel has been a three-point shooting team since before

Coach Flint came back to Philadelphia. Drexel has made

at least one three-pointer in 484 games dating back to

the 1991-92 season. The last time the Dragons did not

make a three-pointer was at Vermont on Feb. 14, 1992.

The Dragons are home for Senior Night against James

Madison on Feb. 27. It will be the last Daskalakis Athletic

Center appearance for Frank Elegar and Randy Oveneke.

The team concludes the regular season with a trip to

Long Island to face Hofstra on March 1. Hofstra defeated

Drexel in Philadelphia earlier this season. The CAA

Tournament begins in Richmond on March 7 and runs

through Monday night, March 10. The winner of the

tournament gets an automatic bid to the NCAA

Tournament.

Drexel graduated four players from last year’s team,

including three starters. Chaz Crawford was last year’s

CAA Defensive Player of the Year. He led the league in

rebounding and blocks, and is second and fifth,

respec-tively, in those categories all-time at Drexel. Bashir

Mason was the only player in CAA history to be named

to the league’s All-Defensive team four times. He had

over 1,100 career points, is second all time in steals and

third in assists at DU. Dominick Mejia started at guard

and scored over 1,000 points in his career at Drexel after

transferring from N.C. State and set the school mark for

three pointers in a season with 92. Walk-on Jake

Rauchbach was also lost to graduation. Last season’s

senior class went to the postseason three times.

The Dragons are scheduled to play 31 games this season

with the Philly Classic counting as an exempt event.

Drexel has 13 games at the DAC, including

non-confer-ence games with Bucknell and Rider. The Dragons have

already hosted Missouri Valley-power Creighton.

The Dragons played five games at the Palestra. Two

of those games are home contests (vs. Saint Joseph’s

and Temple), while two of the four Philly Hoop Group

Classic games were also held at the storied arena. Drexel

finished the year 3-2 in the historic building.

Drexel has just four non-conference road games, but

three of those were against teams that went to the

post-season (Penn, Toledo, Virginia). Florida Gulf Coast

host-ed the Dragons in its first home game as a Division I

school.

Coach Flint has had 20 of his former players go on to

play professional basketball, including eight since he

took over as the head coach at Drexel.

Chaz Crawford and Dominick Mejia are the latest

players to play professionally. Crawford is playing in

Turkey, while Mejia played in the Dominican Republic.

Phil Goss, Sean Brooks, Kenell Sanchez, Eric Schmieder,

Tim Whitworth and Robert Battle are all still active.

Drexel has also produced two NBA players. Current

New York Knick Malik Rose led Drexel to three NCAA

tournament appearances and won two NBA titles.

Michael Anderson, the school’s all-time leader in

scor-ing, played with the San Antonio Spurs for one season.

Drexel has seven players who will be on the bench and

ready to contribute this season. Three freshmen have

made their collegiate debut. Jamie Harris, Gerald Colds

and Adrian Hynes-Guery are three guards brought in by

the coaching staff. Harris and Colds are from New York

City, while Hynes-Guery is a Montreal native.

Drexel will also have Yannick Formbor and Evan

Neisler in the line-up. Formbor redshirted last season,

while Neisler had to sit out last year as a transfer. He

came to the Dragons from Boston College and has three

years of eligibility remaining.

Chris Mohl, a junior, and Stuart Cameron, a

sopho-more are two new walk-on players to this year’s team.

Frank Elegar was named the CAA’s co-Player of the Week

on Jan. 7. Elegar averaged 27 points and 14 rebounds in

two games. He set career-highs with 33 points and 17

rebounds in the loss to Delaware. In the team’s win vs.

UNCW, Elegar had 21 points and 12 rebounds.

Freshman Gerald Colds was named the CAA Rookie

of the Week on Monday, Nov. 12. The guard from St.

Raymond’s High School poured in 18 points in his first

collegiate game in Drexel’s win at Penn. He was 6-for-9

from behind the arc. Colds followed that performance by

scoring 10 points in Drexel’s win vs. Navy.

Since Bruiser Flint took over at Drexel, the Dragons have

posted a 60-24 (.714) record in the Daskalakis Athletic

Center. Over the past five seasons, the Dragons are

43-18 in the building. Overall, Flint’s teams are 61-30 in

“home” games, which include occasional contests at the

Palestra. This year Drexel played two home games at the

Palestra. The Dragons fell to Temple in the building on

Dec. 15 and lost to Saint Joseph’s there on Dec. 31.

Three-Pointers a Key

Three-Pointers a Key

While Frank Elegar has proved to be a consistent player in the

post for Coach Flint, the Dragons have yet to get consistency

shooting from behind the three-point stripe. When the Dragons

shoot well from deep, they usually win the game. When they

don’t, they have come up on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

This season, Drexel is 8-2 when it shoots 34 percent or better

from long range. When they make seven or more

three-point-ers, they have just one loss (5-1). When the Dragons shoot less

than 34 percent from behind the arc, they are just 3-15.

The Big Man in the Middle

The Big Man in the Middle

Frank Elegar was named a Preseason First Team All-CAA

selec-tion. The senior, who sat out the Northeastern game with back

spasms, had double-doubles in six of his last 14 games and

has nine this season. On Jan. 5, Elegar recorded career-highs

with 33 points and 17 rebounds against Delaware despite

mak-ing just seven of 17 free throws. In the rematch against the

Hens, he had 22 points and 11 boards in the Dragons’ win (he

was 10-for-14 from the floor). Elegar had 29 points and 11

rebounds in a losing effort at Towson on Jan. 12. Earlier this

year, he had a 24-point, 14-rebound performance vs. Navy.

Elegar, a native of the Bronx, had a big game at No. 23 Virginia

with 23 points and was 8-for-14 from the floor.

Elegar was named the MVP in the Liberty Bracket of the Philly

Hoop Group Classic, scoring 21 points in 21 minutes as the

Dragons defeated Loyola (Md.) in the championship game. He

is third in the CAA in FG percentage at .579. He is also fourth

in the CAA in rebounding (8.1), 10th in scoring (14.9) and is

second in blocks per game.

Changing of the Guard

Changing of the Guard

With the graduation of Bashir Mason and Dominick Mejia,

Tramayne Hawthorne is emerging as the leader in the

back-court. The junior, one of the top perimeter defenders in the

CAA, was also one of the top long-range shooters in the

CAA a year ago. Hawthorne nailed five three-pointers in

games against Mason (2/7), Georgia State (Jan. 30) and at

Old Dominion (2/14). In the first meeting against the

Panthers, he snapped out of a slump by pouring in a

career-best 23 points, including 16 in the second half. It eclipsed

his old mark of 22 points he set at Florida Gulf Coast. He is

second on the team in scoring at 11.4 points per game.

Hawthorne leads the Dragons in assists (88), in steals (54)

and is second in minutes played. Hawthorne has 72

three-pointers on the season and is now 11th on Drexel’s career

three-point list. He has scored at least 10 points in 17

games this season. Hawthorne also has 105 career steals

which places him 16th all-time at Drexel.

Dragon “D”

Dragon “D”

Coach Flint’s teams have been known for their defense over

the years. However, the Dragons lost two of the best defenders

the school has had in recent memory with the graduation of

Chaz Crawford and Bashir Mason. During the 2006-07 season,

the Dragons led the CAA in field-goal percentage defense at

.402 and were second in scoring defense at 60.6. Crawford was

the CAA’s Defensive Player of the Year and Mason was named

to the CAA All-Defensive Team for a record fourth time.

The defense played well early in the season and has

start-ed to play better as of last. Entering today’s game, the defense

is holding opponents to .420 shooting from the floor, the sixth

lowest total in the CAA. Drexel has held its opponent to under

42 percent shooting in five of the last six games.

Freshman Class

Freshman Class

The Dragons' freshmen are making an immediate contribution

in their first year. Jamie Harris, from Wings Academy in New

York, has played in every game for Coach Flint. Harris has 41

assists, 18 steals and averages 2.3 points per contest. Gerald

Colds, a St. Raymond’s product, provides offense off the

bench. Colds, who was named the CAA Rookie of the Week

ear-lier in the year, is shooting 32 percent from long range. He is

also fourth on the team in scoring at 6.8 points per game.

Adrian Hynes-Guery, Drexel’s other rookie, came off the bench

in eight games this season before being injured. He is out

indefinitely with a wrist injury.
