About the Korean Language

The Korean Language is one of the most important languages in the world. At present, it is spoken

by approximately 45 million people in South Korea, and approximately 25 million in North Korea.

Also, around 6 million Koreans are residing in areas such as China, America, Japan, and the former

Soviet Union, and many of them use the Korean language.

Linguistically, the Korean language belongs to the Altaic family. Languages such as Mongolian,

Manchu, Japanese, and others are being considered to be of the same language system.

In the case of South Korea, the modern language used by educated people living in Seoul is

considered to be standard, and North Korea has established a Cultured Language centered on the

language used in Pyongyang. After World War Two, North and South Korea were separated, and it

has already been over 50 years since the separation. Because of ideological differences, differences

in the language have also arisen, but there is no big difficulty in communication. Also, with the

opportunity opened by the 2000 summit talk between President Kim Dae-jung and North Korean

leader Kim Jung-il, it is expected that the language differences between South and North Korea will

rapidly disappear.

The number of foreigners wishing to learn the Korean language has been rapidly increasing since

the 1988 Olympics and the 2002 World Cup.

About King Se-jong

King Se-jong was the 4th king of the Chosun Dynasty (1392-1910). He is considered to be the

greatest king in the history of Korea. He was a distinguished linguist, and is known to have been

especially knowledgeable about phonology.

During his reign, he criticized the practice of using only Chinese characters in writing and invented

the Korean Script (

훈민정음 hunminjeongeum), phonetic symbols that harmonize with the

characteristics of the spoken Korean language. 훈민정음 hunminjeongeum (the Korean Script) means

the upright sound that teaches the people. Afterwards, the name was changed to

한글 hangeul (the

Korean language), which means “great language,” and it has been referred to as such since that

time.

It is very easy to learn Korean because it is a system of phonetic symbols consisting of 14

consonants and 10 vowels. UNESCO took notice of how easy it is to learn the Korean alphabet, and

is awarding the King Se-jong Award to individuals or groups that have worked hard to eliminate

illiteracy.

Understanding & Using the Korean Language

Prof. Jung-Sup Kim, Ph.D.

Director, Institute of International Education

Kyung Hee University

(4)

You will have many opportunities to meet King Se-jong in Korea. Oct. 9th is the Hangeul

Proclamation Day, commemorating the invention of the Korean language. Also, the picture of King

Se-jong is on the 10,000 won bill.

The Korean Alphabet

1) Vowels

The basic Korean vowels are represented by “

∙, ㅡ, ㅣ”, which is referred to as “sun, earth and

man”. Mixing 3 depictions together is how the vowels were created. The remarkable thing is that

the most essential characteristics of the Korean language are reflected through these strokes.

King Sejong created the effect of portraying bright and dark pictures through the mixing of these

figures.

For instance, the vowel “

ㅣ∙ (ㅏ)” , which portrays the rising of the sun in the east, represents a

bright picture, “ㆎ(ㅓ)”, portrayal of the sun setting in the west, a dark picture, “ㆍ(ㅗ)”, the sun

rising from the horizon, bright, and “

ㆍ(ㅜ)”, the sun below the horizon, dark. From these basic

vowels came the formation of the [y] sounding vowels “ㅑ(ㅣ+ㅏ), ㅕ(ㅣ+ㅓ), ㅛ(ㅣ+ㅗ) and

ㅠ(ㅣ+ ㅜ)”.

2) Consonants

The Korean consonants were made of the shape formed by the vowel organs when uttered. From

the basic consonants (

ㄱ, ㄴ, ㅁ, ㅅ, ㅇ), extra lines were drawn to make the following characters.

ㄱ → ㅋ

ㄴ → ㄷ, ㅌ, ㄹ

ㅁ → ㅂ, ㅍ

ㅅ → ㅈ, ㅊ

ㅇ → ㅎ

Then, instead of making new characters, other letters were made by putting two characters

together.

ㄱ + ㄱ → ㄲ

ㄷ + ㄷ → ㄸ

ㅂ + ㅂ → ㅃ

ㅅ + ㅅ → ㅆ

ㅈ + ㅈ → ㅉ

10 Useful Expressions

1)

안녕하세요?

Annyeongha-seyo: Hello

The Korean greeting

안녕하세요 (Annyeongha- seyo ) can be used in almost any situation. There is

no difference between the morning, afternoon, and evening greetings in the Korean language, or

between people you meet for the first time or people you know well. It is only okay to say

안녕

(Annyeong) to close friends or to your juniors.

2)

김치

Gimchi: Kimchi

Kimchi is Korea's representative food. It would be very strange to have

Korean food without kimchi. Koreans say that it is hard for them to live

even a day without kimchi. They tell stories about how hard it was for

them without kimchi when traveling overseas.

Kimchi has another meaning. It is also used to mean to smile when

taking pictures. If you say kimchi instead of smile or cheese, you will

have many pleasant memories about your stay in Korea. Koreans often

say that all that remains from traveling is pictures. Of course, you must

smile when saying kimchi.

3)

건배

Geonbae: Cheers

When meeting people from other countries, people sometimes naturally gather for a drink. There

are times when it is at a huge party, and times when a meal with a close friend leads to a drink. If

you can shout “cheers!” in Korean, you will be able to make the atmosphere more pleasant. In

Korea, people generally say

건배 (geonbae). Also, the expression 위하여 (wihayeo) is sometimes

used, and this literally means “for,” so it would be even better to insert somebody’s name or the

name of a group before

위하여 (wihayeo).

4)

예 / 아니오.

Ye: Yes / Anio: No

They are the expressions which mean yes/no in Korean. The 예 (Ye) /아니요 (Anio) of the Korean

language is different from English because of the fact that its meaning depends on the condition

of the speaker. For example, when asked a question in the negative, 예 (Ye) has a negative

meaning and

아니요 (Anio) has a positive meaning. To the question “Don't you love me?” 예 (Ye)

means “No, I don't love you” and 아니요 (Anio) means Yes!

5)

좋습니다.

Jot-sseumnida: Ok.

좋습니까?

Jot-sseumnikka: Ok?

The Korean expression 좋습니다 (Jot- sseumnida) means Like, Good, or OK. When saying “I like

Korea,” you can say “Korea

좋습니다” (Jot- sseumnida). In Korean, -다 da is used when

answering, and -까 kka when questioning. Therefore, 좋습니까? (Jot-sseumnikka?) is a question.

(6)

6)

맛있습니다.

Masit-sseumnida: It's delicious.

맛있습니까?

Masit-sseumnikka: Is it delicious?

When having meals, Koreans want to know whether the guest finds the food delicious or not.

Therefore, it is good to express yourself if you find the food delicious. A useful expression to use is

맛있습니다 sseumnida). Most probably, the Korean will have asked “맛있습니까?”

(Masit-sseumnikka?). You can answer

김치 맛있습니다 (Gimchi masit-sseumnida)=The kimchi is

delicious, 불고기 맛있습니다 (Bulgogi masit-sseumnida)=The meat is delicious.

7)

아주

Aju: very

It might be hard for you to remember the previous expressions

좋습니다 (Jot-sseumnida) and 맛

있습니다 (Masit-sseumnida) when you return to your country. There is another useful expression

to remember instead. It is the expression

아주 (aju) which means “very” in English. There is no

problem in conveying your meaning by just answering 아주 (aju), and you might even find that

Koreans will find it to be humorous. Since it is an expression of emphasis, it will be more effective

to give strength to your voice when using it.

8)

안녕히 가세요.

Annyeonghi-ga-seyo: Goodbye

안녕히 계세요.

Annyeonghi-gye-seyo: Goodbye

There are two kinds of greetings when saying goodbye in Korean. There is the greeting you say to

the people who are leaving the place, and the greeting you say to the remaining people. You say

안녕히 계세요 (Annyeonghi-ga-seyo) to the people who are leaving, and 안녕히 계세요

(Annyeonghi- gye-seyo) to the people who remain.

가 (ga) means Go, and 계 (gye) means Stay.

Of course, you say 안녕히 가세요 (Annyeonghi- ga-seyo) if everybody is leaving.

9)

반갑습니다.

bangap-sseumnida: Nice to meet you

The expression

반갑습니다 (ban-gap-sseum- nida) means “Nice to meet you” in English. The title

of a popular folk song in North Korea is

반갑습니다 (ban-gap- sseumnida). For a more exact

expression, you can insert

만나서 (mannaseo) at the beginning. In the case you insert 만나서

(mannaseo), it means that it is a first meeting.

10)

감사합니다.

Gamsaha-mnida: Thank you

고맙습니다.

Gomap-sseumnida Thank you

The expression 감사합니다 (gamsaha-mnida) means “Thank you.” A more softer expression is

고맙습니다 (gomap-sseumnida). Although things are changing now, Koreans do not usually use

expressions like “Thank you” or “I’m sorry,” especially if they think it is a small matter. Therefore,

there are times when Koreans are misunderstood as unfriendly by foreigners. However, in reality,

Koreans welcome foreigners with warm hearts, and it is hoped that foreigners will recognize this

fact.
