instruction for lectures, tutorials and laboratory classes, and for written assignments. 3.2. Programme Aims, Objectives and Learning Outcomes

In an increasingly globalised world, the BSocSc Programme in Globalisation and Development aims at enhancing students’ ability to assess and manage international phenomena in the social, economic and environmental domains, thus ultimately mastering complexity and interconnectedness within countries, across world regions, and on the global scene as a whole.

Its main objectives are:

(1) To provide students with the solid analytical and practical skills required to make sense of crucial socio-economic governance and development challenges, both in China and abroad;

(2) To endow students with in-depth multidisciplinary knowledge and ability to actually apply theories and principles to real-life circumstances, as well as with key analytical skills in the intertwined fields society, economy and environment. The present level of global interdependence of communities and phenomena requires, in fact, a growing number of multifaceted professionals, who can effectively manage complexity and process a wide range of diverse inputs in fast-changing, multicultural contexts; (3) To train students to positively impact their communities as informed, responsible, proactive global

citizens;

In order to achieve the above objectives, the curriculum has been carefully designed to enable students to achieve the following Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs). Upon completion of the Programme, students will be able to:

PILO 1: Explain drivers and implications of global socio-economic affairs’ increasing convergence;

PILO 2: Apply relevant theoretical frameworks, sound methodology and effective analytical skills to social sciences’ study and research;

PILO 3: Analyse relevant development and/or cooperation patterns at regional and global levels;

PILO 4: Recognise and holistically interpret the social, economic and environmental components of sustainable progress;

PILO 5: Critically evaluate and manage complex globalisation and development challenges as responsible citizens and future servant leaders.

As students of the Programme will receive HKBU degrees upon successful completing the graduation requirements, the above PILOs are in line with HKBU’s Graduates Attributes (GAs):

GA 1: Citizenship: Be a responsible citizen with an international outlook and a sense of ethics and

civility;

GA 2: Knowledge: Have up-to-date, in-depth knowledge of an academic specialty, as well as a broad

range of general knowledge;

GA 3: Learning: Be an independent, lifelong learner with an open mind and an inquiring spirit;

GA 4: Skills: Have the necessary information literacy and IT skills, as well as numerical and

problem-solving skills, to function effectively in work and everyday life; GA 5: Creativity: Be able to think critically and creatively;

GA 6: Communication: Have trilingual and biliterate competence in Chinese and English, and the ability

to articulate ideas clearly and coherently;

7. Internship, Placement and Overseas Visits

In order to provide students with practical experience and broaden their minds and horizons, UIC will try to arrange internships, placement in industries, companies and enterprises, and overseas visits for students (for details, see the UIC website).

8. Research Institute

In 2006, the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences established an Institute of Cross-Cultural Studies (for details, see UIC website).
