CHAPTER 1
PRASNA AND ITS UTILITY
Prasna is a very important part of astrology and is very useful. In some cases, only the prasna astrology is helpful. The Prasna means when we reply a question based on the horoscope prepared for the date and time when a querent has approached for astrologi-cal help. Generally, the prasna is made when the querent does not have a birth horoscope. It is very important that whenever a querent has approached for the first time, the time and date are noted. The place would be the location of the astrologer. In case of a tele-phonic or an e-mail query the place remains as the location of the querent
For the researchers and advance learners noting down the time of the first query is helpful in timing of events and rectification of the birth charts. Even the astrological remedial measures prescribed according to the ascendant of the prasna have proved to be helpful in majority of the cases, wherever a response was available.
The study of prasna is very useful :
-When the querent or the person about whom the prasna is being made does not have a birth chart.
-To ascertain the ascendant when the ascendant is either in the ending degrees or the beginning of a new sign. In such cases, the ascendant rising in the prasna generally matches with the ascendant of the birth chart. The correctness of the ascendant of the birth chart is very important to figure out the true functional nature of the planets in a particular nativity. Not only the functional nature of planets plays a key role in the analysis of a chart
2 Application of Prasna Astrology
but also it is necessary for prescribing the astrological remedial measures.
- To time return of missing persons. - To time recovery of patients.
- To predict recovery of stolen or misplaced items. - To predict solemnisation of marriage.
- To predict success of nctv ventures.
The only requirement for the success of the prasna astrology is that the querent approaches the astrologer without any appointment for the sole purpose of a query. If a telephonic call is made to fix up an appointment, then the time of the telephone call is noted for the prasna while the actual meeting for the consultation may take place at the appointed time.
Sometimes, it so happens when a person is introduced to an astrologer, the former immediately puts a question. Such a question should always be replied according to the birth chart of the querent. In case the querent does not have a birth chart, then he/ she should be asked to contact the astrologer after a week or ten days without fixing an appointment. If the astrologer is not avail-able at the time of the approach made by the querent, then the time of approach should be noted and should be used for preparation of a birth chart. The prasna chart is prepared in full for identifying the strength of the planets and working out the planetary periods for timing the events. The events are timed with the help of the operating planetary periods and the transit influences, both formative and separative.
Even at the cost of some repetition, the essential predictive techniques of the Systems' Approach have been mentioned in this book so that the case studies included in this book are properly understood by the readers without referring to other books of the Systems' Approach.
Prasna brings out the main question(s) of the querent based on the conjunctions, aspects, placements and the operating
plan-♦
ets. If the lord of the fifth house is afflicted, the prasna may pertain to the progenic matters. If the lord of the seventh house is afflicted, the question may pertain to spouse or marital affairs or foreign visit or foreign stay. All the conjunctions, aspects, placements and the operating planetary periods are to be studied with reference to the ascendant and not treating the house pertaining to the relation about whom the question is made as an ascendant for replying the question. For example, if one wants to know about the spouse then the influences on the seventh house are considered and the seventh house is not treated as the ascendant of the spouse. This is further elaborated in the case studies included in the book.
CHAPTER 2 C O N C E P T S
Major Constituents of the System of Astrology
The divine science of astrology has four major constituents, that are signs, houses, planets"and the planetary periods. It will be in the fitness of things if the four constituents of the system are briefly discussed for developing the understanding for learning the Hindu system of astrology.
A. SIGNS
The first constituent of the system is signs. They are twelve in number and are ruled by the planets indicated against each of
them:-SIGNS LORDS
1. Aries Mars
2. Taurus Venus
3. Gemini Mercury
4. Cancer The Moon
5. Leo The Sun
6. Virgo Mercury 7. Libra Venus 8. Scorpio Mars 9. Sagittarius Jupiter 10. Capricorn Saturn 11. Aquarius Saturn 12. Pisces Jupiter
Concepts 7
You will observe that the planets Mars. Venus, Mercury, Ju-piter and Saturn rule over two signs. These planets have special attention to one of their signs and this sign is known as their mooltrikona sign. The signs Aries, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius are the mooltrikona sign of the planets Mars, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn, respectively.
The signs possess the positive and negative aspects of their lords according to their nature and according to the strength of their lords. The most important quality is that they lead us to infer the extent of fructifications of the signification of a particular house. For example, if the sign Libra falls in a house and its lord Venus is in full strength, the significations of the house in particu-lar will flourish to a very affluent level of the society in which a particular native (person) is living. The significations of the signs have been detailed in Chapter 3.
B. HOUSES
The second constituent of the System is houses. The houses are twelve in number and each of the twelve houses of the horo-scope deals with specific significations. The significations of the houses fructify under the planetary periods connected with them. The significations of the houses have been detailed in Chapter 4. The houses are good and bad. The sixth, eighth and twelfth houses are known as bad (malefic) houses as these rule diseases, obstruc-tions and losses, respectively.
C. PLANETS
The third constituent of the System is planets. In Hindu as-trology, we consider the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu as planets. While the Sun and the Moon are the luminaries, Rahu and Ketu are the shadowy planets.
As the planets Pluto, Neptune and Uranus neither have a lord-ship over a house nor have a planetary period of their own, they can in no way be considered in the predictive astrology.
The planets signify various things including the specific body parts and the functional system of health. For example, the Sun
6 Application of Prasna Astrology
rules heart, digestive system and vitality. The Moon rules the lungs, fluids in body, lymphatic system. etc. The significations of the planets have been detailed in Chapter 5.
The planets attain benefic or malefic functional nature in a nativity (horoscope) based on the lordship of benefic or malefic houses. The planets may be weak or strong. The functional malefic planets when influencing other planets or houses cause afflictions to them.
The planets, when placed in a particular sign, are considered as exalted/debilitated. In their signs of exaltation the planets be-come strong while in their signs of debilitation the planets bebe-come weak. The planets become exalted or debilitated in the signs men-tioned against each:

D. PLANETARY PERIODS
Concepts 9
Various types of planetary periods for specific planetary combina-tions are mentioned in classical texts. But, we will consider only Vimshotri dasa system in this book as this is universally applicable for all sets of combinations in a nativity.
The planets according to their strength in a horoscope, give results of the significations and houses ruled by them in their sub periods. More light on this will be thrown at appropriate places in the book.

The placement of a significator in a moveable sign makes a person dynamic in nature. The placement of a significator in a fixed sign mthes a person less flexible in approach. The placement of a significator in a common sign makes a person of adjust-able nature.
The placement of the significator in a fruitful sign indicates early gains while the placement of the significator in a semi-fruitful sign indicates slow gains. The placement of a significator in a barren sign indicates gains after lot of efforts.
The airy element makes a person thinker, creative and spiri.-tualist while an earthy element makes a person pleasure-seeker and he is persistently engulfed in materialistic pursuits. The water element makes the person ease-lover and keeps him fully involved in worldly attachments.
The positive element shows greater chance of success. The human element makes the approach of a person humanistic in life and he is generous, helpful and respectful to others.
SOME OTHER CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SIGNS Sex of the Signs
Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius are male signs. Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces are female signs.
Signitications of Signs 13
Prishthodaya Signs
Aries, Taurus, Cancer. Sagittarius and Capricorn are signs that rise with their hind parts first. If a significator planet is placed in these signs and is an indicator of timing the event, it will cause the event early.
Sirsodaya Signs
Leo, Virgo. Libra, Scorpio, Gemini and Aquarius signs rise with their head first and indicate that normal time would be taken for the fructification of an event.
Ubhyodaya Signs
Pisces rises with both sides. The events are timed with the help of the strength of the planet in question and the placement of the planet in the sign Pisces does not make a difference.
Reptile Signs
Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are known as reptile signs.
Directions of the Signs
Aries, Leo and Sagittarius rule the east direction. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn rule the south direction. Gemini, Libra and Aquarius rule the west direction.. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces rule the north direction. The directions in the prasna analysis are identified from the placement of the significator planet in a par-ticular sign.

The sixth, eighth and twelfth houses are called malefic houses or dusthana houses.
Benefic houses
All houses, other than the malefic houses, are treated as benefic or auspicious houses under the Systems' Approach.
Extent of Houses
Under the Systems' Approach the extent of each house is 30 degrees. The results of the planets are analysed on the basis of p a1 cement of the planets in a particular house. Their longitudinal difference from the degree rising in the ascendant does not make a difference. The degree rising in the ascendant is considered as the most effective point o______________e ascen. an an. semi ar y the samede-greee would be considered as the most effective point of all the houses. Suppose 10 degree rises as the ascendant in Leo. The most effective point of all the houses would be 10 degrees. The planets placed in a house having longitude between 5 degree to 15 degree would be influencing the most effective point of the concerned house.
The significations of houses fructify under the planetary periods connected with them. The nature or extent of significations is

ADVANCE ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES
The key issues in horoscopic analysis are:
(1) Identifying the functional nature of the planets in a nativity; (2) The techniques for judging the strength of a planet;
(3) The distinction between the weak and/or afflicted planets; (4) The impact of weak and/or afflicted planets;
(5) The orb of longitudinal difference for judging the impact of conjunctions and aspects;
(6) The most malefic planet; and
(7)
The most effective point (MEP) of various houses in a chart.SALIENT FEATURES OF THE SYSTEMS' APPROACH
For the benefit of the readers, the prominent features of the Systems' Approach are being discussed here. Events and indications in life are ruled by planets, houses, signs and planetary periods. The planets during their operating periods bless the native with the significations ruled by them depending upon their strength and placement in a particular horoscope. Identifying the weakness and affliction of planets is not at all a difficult job and can be learnt by beginners or non-astrologers with the help of the book, "SELF LEARNING COURSE IN ASTROLOGY". The Systems' Approach not only increases the accuracy of analysis but also speeds up the analytical process and helps in identifying the results of analysis in an unambiguous manner, consistently without any con-fusion.
FUNCTIONAL NATURE OF PLANETS

key analytical factor
in
the horoscopic analysis. Besides Rahu and Ketu the planets, whose mooltrikona signs are in the malefic houses (sixth, eighth and twelfth) with reference to the ascendant, act as functional malefic planets in a nativity. For this purpose the sign Cancer is considered as mooltrikona sign of the Moon. In excep-tional cases. when Rahu is well placed in a mooltrikona sign of a planet. without causing any conjunction or close aspect ith other houses and planets and the dispositor planet is strong. Rahu gives good results during its sub periods for materialistic prosperity. Rahu-Ketu. Nhen exalted, give materialist benefits while debilitated Rahu involves the native in exposed scandals and acute physical sufferings.Under the Systems' Approach, the planets indicated against each ascendant, act as functional malefic planets for the concerned ascendant: ASCENDANT Aries Taurus Gemini Cancer Leo Virgo Libra Scorpio Sagittarius Capricorn Aquarius Pisces
The functional malefic planets for various ascendants, men-tioned above, may appear to be at variance when seen in the con-text of the available classical con-texts and used by the translators of the classical texts, but when you analyse the charts based on the functional malefic planets brought out hereinabove, you would find that all of your confusions disappear at one stroke.

CONJUNCTIONS AND ASPECTS
When two or more planets have same longitudes, the con-junction is known as an exact concon-junction. If the longitudinal dif-ference happens to be less than five degrees, the conjunction is known as a close conjunction.
Similarly, when two or more planets mutually aspect each other on the same longitudinal degree or a planet casts its aspect exactly on the most effective point of a house or houses, the aspect is known as exact aspect. If this aspect is within a longitudinal difference of five degrees, then the aspect is known as a close aspect.
The conjunctions or aspects with more than five degrees lon-gitudinal difference are wide conjunctions or aspects. These do not have permanent impact in life except the short lived transit influences on the planets involved in wide conjunctions or aspects separately and severely.
ANALYSING STRENGTH OF PLANETS
Those planets are considered weak, which are in their signs of debilitation, are combust, are in the state of old age or infancy and placed in the malefic houses in the rasi chart. The Systems' Approach also considers a planet weak if it is placed in the mooltrikona sign of another weak planet and if a planet occupies its sign of debilitation in the navamsa and other varga charts. In all other situations, the planets are considered strong and well placed.
A weak planet is not capable to fully protect its general and particular significations.
The general significations means the aspects ruled 'by the planet. For example, the Sun rules father, status of the native. heart, digestive system, etc., irrespective of the lordship of the Sun in a particular nativity. The particular significations of the planet means the significations of the house where its mooltrikona sign is placed and the house where this planet is placed in the natal chart.

with delay and suffer whenever the weak planet is afflicted due to close aspect or conjunction with the functional malefic planet. The natal affliction causes damages in the entire sub period of the weak planet and the afflicting planets while the transit influences cause short term damages for the duration of the effective transit influence.
MOST EFFECTIVE POINT (MEP)
The rising degree in the ascendant is known as the most ef-fective point of all the houses. For example. if 23 degree rises in the Sagittarius ascendant, the most effective point of all the houses will be 23 degree. Any planet conjunct within 5 degrees on either side, that is. within 18 degrees to 28 degrees in that house would be influencing the significations of the house in question in a pro-nounced manner depending upon the functional nature of that planet. Suppose, the planet Moon is placed at 24 degrees in the third house in the sign Aquarius ruled by Saturn. The Moon is a functional malefic planet as it piles the eighth house. Since the Moon is conjunct
with the most effective point of the third house, not only it mars the initiatives of the person but during the sub periods of both the Moon and Saturn it will not allow any ventures or initiatives of the persons to succeed. The aspect of the Moon to the most effective point of the ninth house would also cause obstructions to the significations of the ninth house during the sub periods of both the Sun and the Moon. The Sun is lord of the ninth house while the Moon is aspecting and influencing the ninth house. In such cases if the planet Sun is well placed and strong, the impact of the influence of the Moon would be somewhat milder than if the Sun is badly placed and weak. Suppose, the Saturn is badly placed in the sixth house and is weak due to its being in the state of infancy, then the impact of the Moon on the third house and during the sub periods of the Moon and Saturn would be quite grave.
MOST MALEFIC PLANET (MMP)
If there is a mooltrikona sign in the eighth house from the ascendant, its lord is called the most malefic planet (MMP). In case there is no mooltrikona sign in the eighth house then the role of the MMP is played by the lord of the twelfth house containing

The afflictions to the planets or houses are caused by the close conjunction or aspect of the functional malefic planets in a nativity. The afflictions to strong planets are effective if they are within one degree range. The afflictions to weak planets or houses are fully effective if they are within one degree range while afflic-tions are 80%, 60%,40%,20% and 0% if the afflicting planet or most effective point of the house is having a I deg, 2 deg, 3 deg, 4 deg and 5 deg longitudinal difference, respectively, from the weak planet or the most effective point of the house. It is most severe if the weak and afflicted planets are badly placed. The experience based on the response of the people indicates that these afflictions can be taken care of upto 80 - 90% with the help of the astral

remedies, that is, kavach and charities. If the lord is strong the damage is minimum. For non- mooltrikona signs the impact of the affliction is 100% to 0% depending upon the longitudinal difference between the afflicting planets and the most effective points of the house, as explained above. for the planets. If a planet, being lord of a house. is weak one should see the strength of the significator (karaka) of that house and the supplementary houses.
We hope. now the readers clearly understand that a weak planet and an afflicted planet are not one and the same thing.
MEASURING STRENGTH OF THE HOUSES
The strength of the houses and the signs is gauged through the strength of their lords and the conjunctions or aspects to the most effective point of the houses.
IDENTIFYING RESULTS OF MAIN OR SUB PERIOD LORDS
Events fructify in the periods of indicative planets. There-fore, it is very important that we understand the method of analysing the dasa (main period) and bhukti (sub period) results.
Though various types of conditional planetary periods for specific combinations in a nativity are mentioned in classical texts, Vimshotri dasa system has been mentioned for general applications. Based on the longitude of the Moon in the natal charts, the balance of operational Vimshotri dasa is calculated. Thereafter, the planets have their main periods in a seriatim. The order of the main periods (Dasa) under the Vimshotri dasa system is the dasa of the Sun followed by the Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu and Venus.
During the major period of a planet all other planets share periods proportionate to their period in the Vimshotri dasa. This share of period is known as period (bhukti) and the first sub-period in a planet's own main sub-period is always its own followed by other planets in the seriatim mentioned above.
It the main period lord is a functional malefic, the sub eriods of the other funs Iona ma a is planets cause lot of sufferings
while the sub periods of the functional benefic planets bestow mood results if they are well placed and strong. In the main periods of the functional ma e ie p anet, the sub periods of the functional benefic planets create on y ope - • • - ` is p anets are weak and/or afflicted.
In the main period of the functional benefic planets the sub periods of the well placed and strong fimctional benefic planets bestow good results while the sub periods of badly placed and weak planets bestow just average results with mishaps during the unfavourable transit influences. During the main period of the functional benefic planets the sub periods of the functional malefic planets cause mild sufferings. During the main period of the func-tional benefic planets, the sub period of the funcfunc-tional malefic planets involved in close conjunctions or aspects with other weak planets cause grave concerns and tragic happenings.
The results of the general significations of the sub period lord depend upon its functional nature, strength, placement, lordship, conjunction(s) and aspect(s) to the same. The significations of the house of placement are touched when transit planets create benefic or malefic influences on the sub period lord. In the sub period of a planet, the following significations are
touched:-(1) The general significations of the planet. For example, the Sun rules father, social status, position with the government, male child, digestive system, heart, blood pressure, etc.
(2) The significations of the house where the mooltrikona sign of the planet is placed. In case in the mooltrikona sign house some malefic planet is conjunct with the most effective point of the house or some malefic planet is aspecting the most effective point of the said house, during the sub period of the ruling planet the significations of the mooltrikona sign house shall not prosper and face problems indicated by the afflicting planet depending upon the lordship.
(3)

ANALYSING RESULTS OF HOUSES CONTAINING NON-MOOLTRIKONA SIGNS
You will find in your experience that until and unless there is a close malefic influence on the most effective point of a house, the significations of the house containing a non-mooltrikona sign will not bother the person, at all. That is to say that the person will not seek astral consultation or remedies for the significations of the houses containing a non-mooltrikona sign.
RESULTS OF EXCHANGE OF HOUSES OR ASTERISMS
The situation, in which a planet `A' is placed in a sign or nakshatra ruled by the planet `B' and the planet `B' is placed in a sign or nakshatra ruled by the planet `A', is considered as ex-change of houses or nakshatra (asterisms). For example, if the Sun is placed in the sign Scorpio and the planet Mars is placed in the sign, Leo, then the classical works considers this as exchange of houses by the Sun and Mars.
Under the Systems' Approach, we do not recognise this concept. Each planet is considered, separately, for its placement, strength, relationship with other planets, etc.
ANALYSING CAPABILITY OF PLANETS TO BLESS
WITH THEIR SIGNIFICATIONS
Both the positions - natal and transit - of the planet under consideration are to be studied. The planets would be able to bless the native with their significations, both general and particular, if they are strong both in the natal chart and the transit.
IDENTIFYING TRANSIT INFLUENCES
The result of a particular house will be influenced by a tran-siting planet when it is near to its most effective point depending upon its functional nature whether benefic or malefic. The impact of transit functional malefics is on both functional malefics and benefics. The things governed by the planets would be their gen-eral and particular significations. Similarly, when the impact is on the MEP of a house the significations of the house occupied and house aspected would be influenced by a transit planet.
Transit of functional benefics over the natal position of func-tional malefics or close aspect of natal funcfunc-tional malefics on tran-sit functional benefics also spoils the significations of the func-tional benefics.
INTERACTION BETWEEN THE SUB PERIOD AND TRANSIT RESULTS
During the sub period of a planet the significations of the house piled by the sub period lord, the general significations of the
planet and the significations of the house where the planet is placed would be touched.
The transit means when the planetary position on any given date, subsequent to the date of birth, is studied with reference to the ascendant and the position of the planets in the natal
chart.
For example, let us take a chart with the sign Sagittarius rising in the ascendant. Suppose, in this chart the lord of the eleventh house, Venus, is placed in the twelfth house ruling losses. During the sub period of the Venus loss of elder brother, income and trouble to friends is indicated. Now in the transit the functional malefics Rahu/Ketu may form close conjunction or aspect with any of the three positions to cause the event of the death of the elder brother:
most effective point of the eleventh house. the natal position of Venus
the transit position of the sub period lord, Venus. The sub period lord sets the trend according to the lordship and the placement of the planet besides the other influences on the planet for the entire sub-period while the transit planets cause influence whenever they come into contact with the natal position or the transit position of the sub period lord. The transit influence ceases to exit as soon as the transit conjunction/aspect attains a longitudinal difference of five degrees. We hope this gives better understanding into the interaction between the transit results and the sub period lord results with the help of the above example.

MEASURING THE STRENGTH OF TILE PLANETS Infancy or old age
The results of the planets in the state of infancy or old age vary in degree of strength according to their longitudes. When the planets arc in the state of infancy their poNNcr is 20%. 40%, 60`%,, 80% and 100% when their longitude is I degree. 2 degrees. 3 degrees. 4 degrees and 5 degrees, respectively. When the planets are in the old age their power is 80%, 60%, 40%. 20`%, and zero when their longitude is 26 degrees, 27 degrees, 28 degrees, 29 degrees and 30 degrees, respectively. As a new born or a very old person is incapable of doing anything at their own, similar condition is of the planets when they are in the state of infancy and old age, re-spectively.
Exalted Planets
The placement of the planets in their signs of exaltation adds
to their strength. The peak points of exaltation or debilitation has
very little relevance.
Combust planets
When the Sun is a functional benefic planet its conjunction with other well placed functional benefic planets is good and gives exponential growth for the signification of planets which are in close conjunction with the Sun. The combust planets suffer under the transit malefic influences.
When the Sun is a functional malefic and is closely conjunct with other planets all the planets involved suffer as they become afflicted by the conjunction of a functional malefic planet perma-nently because of the natal affliction. The combust planets in such cases suffer in transit afflictions.
BADHAKA PLANETS
The principle of badhaka house is redundant. For various as-cendants from Aries to Pisces, the planets Saturn. Saturn, Jupiter, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Mars, Venus and Mercury are treated as Badhaka planets. Under no circum-stances, these planets act malefically for the various ascendants. If
the so called badhaka planet is not closely associated with other functional malefic planet or the most malefic planet, its influence on any planet or the most effective point of a house, would never be bad.
KENDRADHIPATI DOSHA
Similarly, the Kendradhipati Dosha is also a redundant con-cept. It is said that when a natural benefic planet owns a kendra house its functional nature for the nativity becomes malefic. The readers can find out for themselves that if the mooltrikona sign of a natural benefic planet falls in a kendra house its influence on other functional benefic planet or the most effective point of a house would always be beneficial. However, when this planet forms mutual close conjunction or aspect with other functional malefic planet, its own general and particular significations would suffer.
These two concepts, that is the Badhaka Planets and Kendradhipati Dosha, have been stretched by those, who never did empirical studies and failed to interpret charts with one single approach.
IMPACT OF YOGAS (PLANETARY COMBINATIONS)
The particular conjunctions, mutual aspects and placements in a natal chart are known as yoga. It may be a Rajyoga, Dhanayoga, Duryoga, Mahapurush yoga, Mahabhagya yoga or even Kalsarpa yoga. The impact of Rajyogas and Dhanayogas accrues only if the planet(s) is or are placed in a good house, unafflicted and are strong. Whenever, the planets ruling the benefic houses conjoin or mutu-ally aspect closely, they form good yoga (say Rajyogas) connected with the indications of both the houses involved provided they are strong and unafflicted. The involvement of a planet ruling the house of income and/or wealth produces a Dhanayoga. In other words, mere location of a planet or a set of planets in a particular sign or house without creating a close relationship through a close con-junction or aspect does not result into yoga.
Similarly, until and unless the most malefic planet, the func-tional malefic planet, Rahu and Ketu form a close conjunction with another planet(s) they do not produce any Duryoga or even Kalsarpa
Advance Analytical Techniques 32
yoga. The misnomer Kalsarpa yoga is being propagated by those persons who have failed to correctly identity the functional nature of planets in various nativities and have not been able to pin point the reasons for miseries Any chart containing the so called Kalsarpa
yoga will not give bad results until and unless Rahu-Ketu or other functional malefic planets cause severe conjunctions or aspects with weak and/or badly placed planets in that particular nativity. Under the Systems' Approach the analysis is always done
with reference to the placement of' planets. their strength and weaknesses and their mutual relationship with reference to the ascendant.
USE OF DIVISIONAL CHARTS
The divisional charts are used for judging the true strength of
a planet while studying its impact in a particular field. Any planet
occupying its sign of debilitation in a particular divisional chart
will
fail to protect its significations in its sub periods. We consider the lord of the ascendant of the concerned divisional chart. For example, if there is no mooltrikona sign in the ascendant of the dasamsa, we consider the position of the prime and secondary determinants of the professional affairs of the natal chart in dasamsa. If the ascending sign of dasamsa is a mooltrikona sign of a particular planet, the same planet is also considered as an additional prime determinant of the profession. For judging the strength of the primary and secondary significators of the natal chart in dasamsa we have to see if these planets have gone to their signs of debilitation in dasamsa.
INSIGHT
Whenever the lord of the any house containing a mooltrikona sign goes to the sixth, eighth and twelfth houses ruling diseases, accidents and losses, respectively, the native has to suffer on ac-count of bad health for the aspects of the health governed by the planet and the house concerned.
When planets are indicating tragic happenings then people usually do not perform astral remedies to protect themselves against the expected losses and the weakness of Jupiter and the lord of the ninth house is always a contributing factor in this regard.
The strengthening astrological remedial measures are sug-gested for all the functional benefic planets even if they are not weak and afflicted in the natal chart. The strengthening measures provide a preventive cover to the planets against their transit weak-ness. Similarly, the propitiating remedial measures are advised for all the functional malefic planets even if they are not forming close afflictions in the natal chart. The propitiatory remedial measures provide a preventive cover for transit and natal afflictions.
Rahu's influence on the most effective point of the ascen-l dant, third house, fifth house or the tenth house and the planets the Sun, the Moon and Venus gives gambling or speculative tendencies and if Mercury ruling analytical power is badly placed and is under the severe affliction of the most malefic planet, the native suffers on account of unmanageable anxiety leading to the depression, nervous breakdown, hypertension, insomnia, coronary diseases.
Indications of time can only be modified with the help of the astral remedies. Until and unless the astral remedies are performed, in our views, the extent of the services of the divine science of astrology is very much limited.
The planetary relationships give results according to the in-dications in case no preventive remedies are performed.
The close influence of the lord of the eighth house during its own sub period results into obstructions, setbacks and denial of the significations of the houses and planets that are under its affliction.
The third house and the planet Mercury rules mental and physical growth. The fifth house governs intelligence and the fourth house rules power of grasp and ability of acquiring education. Weakness and/or affliction of the planets connected with the third, fourth and fifth houses and the Moon and Mercury result in mental retardation.
HOW TO START ANALYSIS
func-34
Application of Prasna Astrology
tional malefic planets and identify the conjunctions or aspects with 5 degrees orb. Put a circle around the planets and houses that are afflicted due to the close influence of the functional malefic planets. Now you can start the analysis.
The problem is always concerning the weak, badly placed and afflicted planets or the sub periods of the functional maletics for trend results related to the sub periods. The short term problem is indicated by the malefic transit over the weak natal planets. The close influence of the most malefic planet on the weak and badly placed planets results into denial of the significations of the afflicted planets. The good results should be indicated for the significations of the well placed strong planets having close conjunctions or aspects.
A functional benefic's position in any of the dusthana houses makes it weak but if it is in the eighth house near the most effective point of the house, then despite weakness it is good as it aspects the most effective point of the second house.
Caution -- Astrologers do not have television and cannot give running commentary.
The best thing is in the shortest possible time indicate the strong and weak areas in chart and prescribe appropriate remedies.

CHAPTER 7
IDENTIFYING PRASNA INDICATIONS
The prime determinants of prasna are weak planets and one or more afflictors, explained below, involved in close conjunctions with other planets or the most effective points of the houses. If a planet is under the affliction of an afflictor, the following aspects will be
touched:-1. General significations of the planet.
The significations of the house containing mooltrikona sign of the afflicted planet.
3. The significations of the house where the afflicted planet is placed.
For various ascendants the following planets become the afflictors: ASCENDANT Aries Taurus Gemini Cancer Leo Virgo Libra Scorpio Sagittarius AFFLICTORS

Venus, Jupiter, Mars, Rahu and Ketu. Rahu and Ketu.
Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. The Moon, Rahu and Ketu.
Saturn, Mars, the Sun, Rahu and Ketu. Mercury, Rahu and Ketu.
Mars, Venus, Rahu and Ketu. The Moon, Rahu and Ketu.

Application of Prasna Astrology
Planetary Periods: The sub periods of the aftlictor and
Capricorn The Sun, Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu.
Aquarius The Moon, Mercury, Rahu and Ketu.
Pisces The Sun, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.
SPOTTING THE PRASNA
For spotting the indications of the prasna proceed as under : 1. Identify the malefic influence of the afflictor(s) on the most
effective points of various houses and the weak planets.
2.
Identify the sub periods of the afflicting and afflicted planets.3.
Examine the transit pace of slow moving or stationary func-tional malefic planets on the most effective points of various houses and the weak and afflicted planets.PRIME DETERMINANTS OF PRASNA
Afflicted Planets: Those planets that have close influence of
the functional malefic planets (afflictors as mentioned above) either by conjunction or aspect are treated as afflicted planets. The close influence of the lord of the sixth house and Rahu causes diseases, disputes, losses through theft and fire and strained financial position. The close influence of the functional malefic planets ruling the eighth and twelfth houses and the planet Ketu gives chronic diseases, major setbacks, termination of relationships, accidents, obstructions and if the afflicted planet is weak and badly placed, the native suffers from long lived problems, fatal diseases and may have to undergo surgery, etc.
Weak Planets: The weak planets are not able to protect their
general significations and the significations of the houses containing their mooltrikona sign and therefore the nano e sutlers because of mal-functioning of health ruled by the weak planets. Needless to add that the badly placed planets are included in the weak planets.
Identifying Prasna Indications 37
afflicted planets as mentioned above and the sub periods of the planets placed in the malefic houses. These sub periods lead to the trends that continue throughout the sub periods and the trends can be reversed if the afflicted planets are strong and the following sub periods are of strong, well placed and unafflicted planets.
Transit Influences: The study of transit influences on the
Prasna. Sometimes, the problem is inordinately prolonged due to the close transit influence of slow moving planets of the prasna planets. If the afflicted planets of the prasna are strong, the problem ends after the transit impact is over. If the natal afflicted planets are weak and badly placed and the sub periods of the afflictors are in progress then the problem turns into constant problem.
TIMING OF EVENTS
The prasna may pertain to the significations ruled by the plan-ets and the significations of the houses containing mooltrikona signs of the afflicted and/or badly placed planets. Timing of the results is worked out as per the strength of the operating or forthcoming well placed lords of the sub periods and or separation of the malefic transit afflictions. If the problem has been caused by the operating sub period then the span of the problem may be for a longer dura-tion and can only be reversed in the sub period of a well placed strong functional benefic planet. If the problem has been caused by a transit malefic influence on a well placed or strong planet, the span of the problem may be when the causing transit malefic influence separates. For desired results, application of astrological remedial measures detailed in Chapter 8 are prescribed. If the native has a natal chart then the remedies are suggested as per the natal chart. If the native does not have a natal chart and he/she has contacted for the first time, the remedies are suggested as per the ascendant of the Prasna.
CHAPTER 8
THE APPLICATION OF ASTROLOGICAL
REMEDIES
To help people come out of their problems the qucrents are advised appropriate astrological remedial measures. The problems
in life are caused by weak planets and/or afflictions to them.
There-fore, two way application of astral remedies is administered after diagnosing the problematic planetary influences in a chart. Firstly, the strength is provided to the weak functionally benefic planets. The strength can be provided by various methods, e.g. stones, colour therapy, KAVACH (the protective shield containing mystical num-bers of the planets) in an auspicious time. Secondly, the malevo-lence of the functionally malefic planets is reduced by offering propitiatory charities concerning these planets. The two way ap-plication helps in reducing the impact of malefic planetary influ-ences to a large extent. The preventive use of astral remedies is much more useful than the curative astral remedies.
Generally, people resort to astral remedies in the end after trying all other therapies ignoring the distinct advantage of pre-ventive diagnostic power of the astrological science. Needless to stress the benefit of preventive medicine/redressal measures as against those of the curative measures.
For both - curative and preventive remedies - the judicious mixture of the following astral remedies is applied.
COLOUR THERAPY: This is a very potent preventive
rem-edy for epilepsy, mental retardation, psychic problems_ etc. and is practised through the use of favourable colours in the matters of dress and furnishings in one's living room.
The Application of Astrological Remedies 39
(As per the opinion of experts compiled by a Library in Pittsburgh the grey colour of cars was found to be the worst in car safety.) As per our colour therapy, we had always been suggesting to avoid grey colours by those desirous of happy living and good health.
VASTU: Again this is preventive as well as curative therapy
for solving the problems in physical and spiritual areas. Wider
applications of this therapy are in the field of success of professional ventures. This is practised through use of outlay of a
building to derive geo-magnetic forces for properly energising the total impact of building with the help of light, air, space and aura conducive to the main functionary.
KAVACH: This is a protective shield containing mystical
numbers of the functionally benefic planets in a nativity and is a strengthening measure. The weak and afflicted planets are enabled to protect and promote their significations. The Kavach is worn in a specially elected auspicious time for generating the desired im-pact. This is used both for preventive and curative purpose.
CHARITIES: These are offered for the planets causing
af-flictions/problems in a horoscope.
MANTRAS: As part of the meditation, the recitation of Man-tras is prescribed for propitiating the trouble causing planets as per the Vedic rituals.
The malefic influences are effectively tackled with the help of propitiatory measures for the afflicting planets which are as
under:-The Sun Give handful of wet wheat with 15-20 grams of jaggery (Gur) to a cow or serving one's father or helping old age needy persons.
The Moon Give a dough to a cow or serving one's mother or old age women.
Mars Morning prayers for ten minutes and being con-siderate to one's servant.
40 Application of Prasna Astrology
Mercury Offering green fodder (about 2 KG) to a covK helping poor and needy children.
Jupiter Offering one bundi laddu (a yellow coloured sweet) to the birds or offering service to one's preceptor/teacher.
Venus Offering white coloured sweet to the birds or helping ladies in distress.
Saturn Offering simple salty food to the birds or help-ing poor.
Rahu Giving away brown coloured sweets to the birds or helping old age needy persons or lepers.
Kern Offering some food to a stray dog or serving/ helping institutions/persons working for spiritualism. These remedies are to be performed daily in the morning af-ter bath and before breakfast.
The weakness of the significator planets, as indicated earlier, are made up with the help of a specially prepared KAVACH to be worn by the native in an auspiciously elected time. For details of the design, size and mystical numbers to be engraved on both sides of the KAVACH, the readers may please refer to our book, "Pre-dictive Techniques and the Application of the Astrological Reme-dial Measures".
These Kavachs (Mantras) get power to do good when the en-gravings are done in an auspicious time as also due to a prescribed way of life. The person prescribing use of the KAVACH should follow the
following:-1. Bath in the morning without any bed tea, etc. 2. Prayers to Lord.
3. Performance of propitiatory remedies as per one's own chart. 4. Practise the divine way in life - that is (1) Be content (2)
Increase utility to humanity (3) Help poor and needy (4) Be kind, generous and benevolent (5) Avoid deeper involvement in sensual pleasures, anger. pride, greed and envy.
Continuous practice of the above principles helps in generating power for helping others to ward off evils in life and derive benefits indicated by the benefic planets in one's chart.
