Operation in Foreign Countries If you are going to drive your Hyundai in another country, be sure to: o Observe all regulations regarding

registration and insurance.

o Determine that acceptable fuel is available.

Unleaded petrol with a Pump Oc-tane Rating of 87 (Research OcOc-tane Number 91) or higher must be used in your Hyundai.

If leaded petrol is used, it will cause the catalytic converter to become ineffec-tive and the emission control system to malfunction. This can also result in increased maintenance expense. To avoid accidental use of leaded fuel, the larger nozzle used with leaded petrol at service stations cannot be inserted into the fuel tank opening of your Hyundai.

B010A01A-DAT

FUEL RECOMMENDATIONS Use Unleaded Petrol

B010E01A-DAT

Petrol for Cleaner Air

To help contribute to cleaner air, Hyundai recommends that you use petrol treated with detergent additives, which help prevent deposit formation in the engine. This petrol will help the engine run cleaner and enhance per-formance of the Emission Control Sys-tem.

B010D01A-DAT

Do not Use Methanol

Fuels containing methanol (wood al-cohol) should not be used in your Hyundai. This type of fuel can reduce vehicle performance and damage com-ponents of the fuel system.

!

CAUTION:

Hyundai Warranty Policy will not cover the damage of the fuel sys-tem and performance problems that are caused by the use of methanol or fuels containing methanol. B010B01A-AAT

What About Gasohol [E-10]? Gasohol (a mixture of 90% unleaded gasoline and 10% ethanol or grain alcohol) may be used in your Hyundai. However, if your engine develops drive ability problems, the use of 100% un-leaded gasoline is recommended. Fu-els with unspecified quantities of alco-hol, or alcohols other than ethanol, should not be used.

UNLEADED FUEL ONLY

(24)

B020A01S-DAT

RUNNING IN YOUR NEW HYUNDAI

During the First 2,000 km No formal running in period is required with your new Hyundai. However, you can contribute to the economical op-eration and durability of your Hyundai by observing the following recommen-dations during the first 2,000 km. o Don't drive faster than 88 km/h. o While driving, keep your engine

speed or revolutions per minute between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm. o Use moderate acceleration. Don't

use full-throttle starts.

o For the first 300 km, try to avoid hard stops.

o Don't labour the engine (in other words, don't drive so slowly in too high a gear that the engine hesi-tates : shift to a lower gear). o Whether going fast or slow, vary

your speed from time to time. o Don't let the engine idle longer than

3 minutes.

o Do not tow a trailer during the first 2,000 km of operation.

B030A01A-AAT KEYS

For greater convenience, the same key operates all the locks in your Hyundai. However, because the doors can be locked without a key, carrying a spare key is recommended in case you accidentally lock one key inside the car.

(25)

!

B880A01A-DAT

IMMOBILISER SYSTEM

The immobiliser system is an anti-theft device, designed to deter automobile theft.

B880B03A-GAT Keys

All of the locks fitted to the vehicle are operated by the same key. However, since it is possible to lock the doors without the use of the key, care should be exercised to ensure that the key does not become locked inside the vehicle by mistake.

NOTE:

If you make your own duplicate key, you will not be able to cancel the immobiliser system or start the en-gine.

CAUTION:

o The password should be recorded and kept in a safe place in case the need to order further keys arises. o If you forget the password, con-sult your authorized Hyundai dealer.

o When starting the engine, do not use the key with other immobi-lizer keys around. Otherwise the engine may not start or may stop soon after it starts.

Keep each keys separately not to have any malfunction after you receive your new vehicle.

(26)

NOTE:

You can get the limp home pass-word when the vehicle is first deliv-ered to you. If you do not have the password, consult your authorised Hyundai dealer.

1. To set the password you may turn the ignition key "ON" and then turn it "OFF" according to the digit num-bers, then the immobiliser indicator will blink along with the operation of the ignition key. For example, turn the ignition key once for digit num-ber "1", and twice for "2", and so on. However, for the digit number "0", you must turn the ignition key for 10 times.

2. Wait for 3~10 seconds.

3. You may set the remaining number of digits by following the same pro-cedures 1 and 2.

4. If all of four digits have been tried successfully, turn the ignition key "ON" and check that the immobiliser indicator illuminates. From this time, you have to start your engine within 30 seconds. If you start your engine after 30 seconds, your engine will not start.

B880D02A-DAT

Limp home procedures

In case the immobiliser warning indi-cator blinks for five seconds when the ignition key is turned to "ON" position, this indicates that the immobiliser sys-tem is out of order. You cannot start the engine without the limp home pro-cedures with ignition key.

The following procedure is how to start the engine with the function of the limp home. (0, 1, 2, 3 as a sample pass-word).

!

NOTE:

If the engine dies while driving after limp home procedure, you can start your engine within 8 seconds with-out limp home procedure again.

5. If the immobiliser indicator blinks for five seconds, you have to try the limp home procedure again from the beginning.

After doing the limp home procedure, you have to consult with your authorised Hyundai dealer as soon as possible.

CAUTION:

o If you fail to try the limp home procedure with the sequence of three times, you have to wait for a minimum of one hour before attempting the limp home proce-dure again.

o If you cannot start your engine in spite of limp home procedure, have your vehicle towed by an authorised Hyundai dealer. B880D03A

Locking and Unlocking Front Doors With a Key

!

o The door can be locked or unlocked with a key.

o Lock the door by turning the key toward the front of the vehicle and unlock it by turning the key toward the rear.

B040A02Y-AAT DOOR LOCKS

WARNING:

o Unlocked doors can be danger-ous. Before you drive away (es-pecially if there are children in the car), be sure that all the doors are securely closed and locked so that the doors cannot be inad-vertently opened from the inside. This helps ensure that the doors will not be opened accidentally. Also, when combined with the proper use of seat belts, locking the doors helps keep occupants from being ejected from the car in case of an accident.

o Before opening the door, always look for and avoid oncoming traf-fic.

Maintenance of Seat Belts When cleaning the seat belts, as recommended, avoid getting solutions into the buckle where they may attack the lubricant or cause corrosion. Do not attempt to bleach or re-dye belts, as this may affect the webbing strength. NOTE:

Do not attempt any form of modifi-cations or repairs to seat belt com-ponents. If the retractor or other components do not operate cor-rectly, call an authorised Hyundai Dealer, who will take the necessary corrective action. Your authorised dealer will inspect all seat belt com-ponents at regular intervals and advise if replacement is required. Between these inspections you should make regular checks to en-sure that foreign objects are not preventing complete buckle en-gagement.

A slack belt will greatly reduce the protection afforded to wearer. Care should be taken to avoid con-tamination of the webbing with polishes, oils and chemicals and particularly battery acid. Cleaning may safely be carried out using mild soap and water. The belt should be replaced if webbing becomes frayed, contaminated or damaged. It is essential to replace the entire assembly after it has been worn in a severe impact even if damage to the assembly is not obvious. Belts should not be worn with straps twisted. Each seat belt assembly must only be used by one occu-pant; it is dangerous to put a belt around a child being carried on the occupant's lap.

No modifications or additions should be made by the user which will either prevent the seat belt ad-justing devices from operating to remove slack, or prevent the seat belt assembly from being adjusted to remove slack.

B150A01A-DAT SEAT BELTS

The use of seat belts reduces the risk of accident injury by avoiding collision with the interior of the car and by preventing the occupants from being thrown out of the car. This makes them the most important safety feature avail-able for you and your passengers. Adequate protection is afforded only when the belt is worn correctly. You should always fasten and adjust your belts before the car is put in motion and encourage your passengers to do the same.

!

WARNING:

Seat belts are designed to bear upon the bony structure of the body, and should be worn low across the front of the pelvis, or the pelvis, chest and shoulders, as applicable; wear-ing the lap section of the belt across the abdominal area must be avoided.

Seat belts should be adjusted as firmly as possible, consistent with comfort, to provide the protection for which they have been designed.

Periodic Inspection

It is recommended that all seat belts be inspected periodically for wear or damage of any kind. Parts of the sys-tem that are damaged should be re-placed as soon as possible.

B160C01A-AAT

Keep Belts Clean and Dry Seat belts should be kept clean and dry. If belts become dirty, they can be cleaned by using a mild soap solution and warm water. Bleach, dye, strong detergents or abrasives should not be used because they may damage and weaken the fabric.

o A child restraint system should be placed in the vehicle's rear seat since this can make an im-portant contribution to safety. o Unrestrained children should not

be carried in the car. Holding a child in your arms is not a satis-factory substitute for a child re-straint system. A child held in this manner can be crushed be-tween your body and the interior of the car.

o Never allow a child to be held in a person's arms while they are in a moving vehicle.

This could result in serious in-jury or death to the child in the event of an accident or sudden stop. Holding a child in a moving vehicle does not offer protection during an accident, even if the person holding the child is wear-ing a seat belt.

o Never use an infant carrier or child safety seat that "hooks" over a seatback; it may not pro-vide adequate security in an ac-cident.

CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEM If the child is old enough to sit alone and the car is not equipped with a proper child or infant seat, the child should be placed in the rear seat and restained with a lap/sash belt.

WARNING:

o Child restraint anchorages are designed to withstand only those loads imposed by correctly fitted child restraints. Under no circum-stances are they to be used for adult seat belts harnesses or for attaching other items or equip-ment to the vehicle.

o Since a safety belt or child re-straint system can become very hot if it is left in a closed vehicle, be sure and check the seat cover and buckles before placing a child there.

Your Hyundai vehicle is equipped with driver's and front passenger's pre-tensioner seat belts. The purpose of the pre-tensioner is to make sure that the seat belts fit tightly against the occupant's body in certain frontal col-lisions.

The pre-tensioner seat belts can be activated with the airbags.

The pre-tensioner seat belt operates in a similar way as an Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) type of seat belt. When the vehicle stops suddenly, or if the occupant tries to lean forward too quickly, the seat belt retractor will lock into position. In certain frontal B180B02A-D

The Hyundai SRS consists of airbags installed under the pad covers in the centre of the steering wheel and the passenger's side front panel above the glove box. The purpose of the SRS is B240A04F-DAT

SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT (AIRBAG) SYSTEM

Driver's Airbag o Do not attempt to service or repair

the pre-tensioner seat belt system in any manner.

o Improper handling of the pre-tensioner seat belt assemblies, and failure to heed the warnings to not strike, modify, inspect, re-place, service or repair the pre-tensioner seat belt assemblies may lead to improper operation or inadvertent activation and se-rious injury.

o Always wear seat belts when

(47)

o Front airbags are not intended to deploy in side-impact, rear-im-pact or rollover crashes. In addi-tion, airbags will not deploy in frontal crashes below the deploy-ment threshold speed.

Rear impact

Side Impact

Rollover o The SRS is designed to deploy

the airbags only when the impact is sufficiently severe and when the impact is in the front or fron-tal angle of the vehicle, and will not deploy in side, rear or rollover impacts. Additionally, the airbags will only deploy once. Thus, seat belts must be worn at all times.

o For maximum safety protection in all types of crashes, all occu-pants including the driver should always wear their seat belts whether or not an airbag is also provided at their seating posi-tion to minimise the risk of se-vere injury or death in the event of a crash. Do not sit or lean unnecessarily close to the airbag while the vehicle is in motion. o The SRS airbag system must

de-ploy very rapidly to provide pro-tection in a crash. If an occupant is out of position because of not wearing a seat belt, the airbag may forcefully contact the occu-pant causing serious or fatal in-juries.

WARNING:

o As its name implies, the SRS is designed to work with, and be supplemental to, the driver's and the passenger's three point seat belt systems and is not a substi-tute for them. Therefore your seat belts must be worn at all times while the vehicle is in motion. In addition, the airbags deploy only in certain frontal impact condi-tions severe enough to likely cause significant injury to the vehicle occupants.

to provide the vehicle's driver and/or the front passenger with additional pro-tection than that offered by the seat belt alone, in case of a frontal impact of sufficient severity.

NOTE:

Be sure to read information about the SRS on the labels provided on the backside of the sun visor and in the glove box.

(48)

The SRS consists of the following com-ponents:

- Driver's Airbag Module - Passenger's Airbag Module - SRS Service Reminder Indicator

(SRI)

- SRS Control Module (SRSCM) The SRSCM continually monitors all elements while the ignition is "ON" to determine if a frontal or near-frontal impact is severe enough to require airbag deployment.

B240B02A-DAT

SRS Components and Functions

B240B02A-D The airbag modules are located both

in the centre of the steering wheel and in the front passenger's panel above the glove box. When the SRSCM de-tects a considerable impact to the front of the vehicle, it will automatically de-ploy the airbags.

Upon deployment, tear seams molded directly into the pad covers will separate under pressure from the expansion of the airbags. Further opening of the cov-ers then allows full inflation of the airbags. A fully inflated airbag in combination with a properly worn seat belt slows the driver's or the passenger's forward motion, thus reducing the risk of head or chest injury.

B240B04A-D The SRS service reminder indicator

(SRI) on the instrument panel will blink for about 6 seconds after the ignition key is turned to the "ON" position or after the engine is started, after which the SRI should go out.

(49)

!

WARNING:

o When the SRS is activated, there may be a loud noise and fine dust will be released throughout the vehicle. These conditions are normal and are not hazardous. However, the fine dust generated during airbag deployment may cause skin irritation. Wash your hands and face thoroughly with lukewarm water and a mild soap after an accident in which the airbags were deployed.

After complete inflation, the airbag immediately starts deflating, enabling the driver to maintain forward visibility.

o The SRS can function only when the ignition key is in the "ON" position. If the SRS SRI does not come on, or continuously re-mains on after flashing for about 6 seconds when the ignition key is turned to the "ON" position, or after the engine is started, or comes on while driving, the SRS is not working properly. If this occurs, have your vehicle imme-diately inspected by your Hyundai dealer.

o Before you replace a fuse or dis-connect a battery terminal, turn the ignition key to the "LOCK" position or remove the ignition key. Never remove or replace the air bag related fuse(s) when the ignition key is in the "ON" posi-tion. Failure to heed this warning will cause the SRS SRI to illumi-nate.

!

CAUTION:

When installing a container of liq-uid air freshener inside the vehicle, do not place it near the instrument cluster nor on the instrument panel surface. If there is any leakage from the air freshener onto these areas (instrument cluster, instrument panel or air ventilator), it may dam-age these parts. If the liquid from the air freshener does leak onto these areas, wash them with water immediately.

Side Impact Airbag (If Installed)

Your Hyundai is equipped with a side impact airbag in each front seat. The purpose of the airbag is to provide the vehicle's driver and/or the front pas-senger with additional protection than that offered by the seatbelt alone. The side impact airbags are designed to deploy only during certain side impact collisions, depending on the crash se-verity, angle, speed and point of im-pact. The side impact airbags are not designed to deploy in all side impact situations.

B990B01A-D

o For best protection from the side impact airbag system and to avoid being injured by the de-ploying side impact airbag, both front seat occupants should sit in an upright position with the seat belt properly fastened. The driver's hands should be placed on the steering wheel at the 9:00 and 3:00 o'clock positions. The passenger's arms and hands should be placed on their laps. o Do not use any accessory seat

covers.

o Use of seat covers could reduce or prevent the effectiveness of the system.

o Do not install any accessories on the side or near the side impact airbag.

o Do not use excessive force on the side of the seat.

o Do not place any objects over the airbag or between the airbag and yourself.

WARNING:

o The side impact airbag is supple-mental to the driver's and the passenger's seat belt systems and is not a substitute for them. Therefore your seat belts must be worn at all times while the vehicle is in motion. The airbags deploy only in certain side im-pact conditions severe enough to cause significant injury to the vehicle occupants.
