The dedicated hour on Wednesdays will be a group session, open to our class section only. Feel free to drop by if you have a question about the course material. If you have a question of a personal or individual nature, please stop by one of the general consultation hours. During these hours I will meet with students individually, on a first come-first served basis. Be aware that you may have to wait in the waiting room while I see any students ahead of you in the line. When the Campus is closed for a holiday or non-instruction day, I will not be holding consultation hours.

Objectives:

This course provides the student with an introduction to the fundamental elements involved in the study and performance of music, including:

• The nature of sound and elements of sonic organization, such as: melody, harmony, rhythm, dynamics, texture, and form.

• The “building blocks” of music, such as: pitches, note and rest values, meters, intervals, scales, and chords.

• Music notation and terminology.

Required Materials:

• Canvas access

• Pencils (not pens!) and erasers. • Music manuscript (staff) paper. • Lined notebook paper

We will be using the free music-theory website musictheory.net as a support resource for this course. For each topic, I will refer you to tutorials and exercises on this website. Links to specific exercises will be provided in the Canvas shell. Practicing these exercises is the best way to ensure success on the exams.

Grading:

Your grade in this course will be determined by your performance on the following: • Homework: 60%

• Midterm Exam: 20% • Final Exam: 20%

Homework: These will include assignments from musictheory.net, worksheets to complete and submit,

and Canvas discussion forums. In order to receive credit for musictheory.net assignments, you must score 70% or higher on the exercise.

Midterm and Final Exam: These exams will assess your understanding of all the fundamental topics we

cover in class. You will have 1 or 2 days to complete them submit in Canvas.

• Week 1: Welcome. Music in Human Cultures.

• Week 2: The Nature of Sound. Elements of Musical Organization. • Week 3: Fundamentals of Rhythm.

• Week 4: Fundamentals of Pitch.

• Week 5: Accidentals and Interval Quality. • Week 6-7: Scales and Modes. Seconds and Thirds. • Week 8: Midterm

• Week 9: Spring Break

• Week 10: Eighth-Note Subdivision. Fourths and Fifths. • Weeks 11: Major Key Signatures.

• Week 12: Minor Key Signatures • Week 13: Minor Scales

• Week 14: Sixteenth-Note Subdivision. Compound Meter. • Week 15: Fundamentals of Harmony.

• Week 16: Final Exam

A - Excellent B - Good C - Satisfactory

D - Less than satisfactory

Effective July 1, 2012 students are allowed three (3) attempts to pass a single class within the Los Angeles

Community College District. If a student gets a “W”, “D”, “F”, or “NP” as a grade in a class, that counts as an attempt. If you think you will not be able to complete this course with a C or better, please drop by the due date.

Students who are registered and miss the first time the class meets may lose their right to a place in the class. Whenever students are absent more than 10% of the total meeting days of the class, the instructor may exclude them from class. If the instructor determines that there are no mitigating circumstances that may justify the absences, the instructor may exclude a student from the class. Students are responsible for officially dropping a class that they stop attending.

(For the non-Music major.) A study of the fundamentals of music including notation, meter signatures and rhythms, major and minor scales and key signatures, intervals, triads, terms, and symbols. Some sight reading and ear training is included.

Violations of academic integrity include, but are not limited to, the following actions: cheating on an exam, plagiarism, working together on an assignment, paper or project when the instructor has specifically stated students should not do so, submitting the same term paper to more than one instructor, or allowing another individual to assume one’s identity for the purpose of enhancing one’s grade (see LACCD Board Rule 9803.28). Penalties may include a grade of zero or "F" on an exam or paper, or even suspension from the College.
