Professional Paralegal Qualifications

"The course notes flowed in a useful realistic order.

They allowed you a sound understanding of how the law has evolved.

My notes continue to act as a useful reference too!"

THE SPECIALIST PARALEGAL PRACTITIONER

PROGRAMME

provides the legal secretary/paralegal or support staff with an in-depth understanding of their chosen area of law, together with a recognisable academic qualification from the University of Strathclyde.

On successful completion of the course, students will be awarded a Specialist Paralegal Practitioner Award at a graduation ceremony held twice yearly at the prestigious Barony Hall, The University of Strathclyde. Additionally students will be eligible for full membership of the Society of Specialist Paralegals, and will be entitled to use the designation M.S.S.P after their name.

ACADEMIC RECOGNITION:

The Specialist Paralegal Practitioner Programme is offered in association with The University of Strathclyde. The University was awarded 5A in the recent UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). This is the highest rating awarded to any Law School in Scotland and, in effect, means that Strathclyde Law School is rated ninth equal (out of 60) Law Schools in the UK.

TUTORIALS

This type of course is taught with a tutor and follows a timetable of weekly tutorials. Tutorials are held in the evening at The University of Strathclyde or in arranged venues throughout the country and course material is distributed at the start of the course. Delegates will sit a final written examination on all programmes (a mid term examination must also be completed in Residential Conveyancing Practice & Civil Court Practice Courses). Revision courses can be arranged subject to demand.

HOME STUDY

This type of course is studied by the delegate at home and is often used where delegates have other external commitments, such as work and/or a family etc. The maximum amount of time given to complete a home study course is 18 months. However, there is no minimum time period. The home study course runs continuously throughout the year. Delegates are provided with the relevant course materials delivered to their preferred destination e.g. to place of work or to your home address. The course consists of continuous assessments, followed by a final written examination. Examinations will be held quarterly in Glasgow, however, alternative venues can be arranged subject to demand.

GROUP TRAINING DELIVERED IN YOUR OWN

OFFICE

In-House training for groups of 3 or more is a cost effective way to complete a Specialist Paralegal Practitioner Qualification. Entire teams or departments can be trained together at times to suit and with no time out of the office required.

For information on this alternative method of delivery please contact the In-House Training Manager on 0141 225 6705.

GRADUATION

Graduations will be held twice yearly at the Barony Hall, The University of Strathclyde. Delegates will be presented with a Specialist Paralegal Practitioner Award from the University. Delegates who are unable to attend the ceremony will receive their certificate by post.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are no pre-requisites for entry onto any of the courses. However, a background in a legal environment would be advantageous. Delegates originate from a variety of backgrounds, such as: Legal Secretaries; Paralegals wishing to undertake a formal academic qualification; HR Practitioners; Local Government Employees; Court Staff; Claims Handlers; Company and Commercial Staff; Legal Assistants transferring to another area of law; Solicitor Returnees requiring to update their knowledge.

THE PROGRAMME

Designed and developed by experienced professional tutors, with an emphasis on practical issues. Programmes are based on relevant case studies or transactions. Specialist tutor support is available throughout.

THE SOCIETY OF SPECIALIST PARALEGALS

The Society of Specialist Paralegals is an alumni association, bringing together graduate paralegal practitioners throughout the UK. Membership of the Society entitles graduate paralegals of The University of Strathclyde, together with paralegals who have graduated in England through The University of the West of England, to use the letters MSSP after their name in recognition of their professional status. Members receive a quarterly magazine, access to a dedicated website and discounts across a wide range of conferences and seminars. They may also dual qualify in England and Wales with a further Paralegal Practitioner Qualification from The University of the West of England.

Please contact the Membership Manager at enquiries@ specialistparalegals.co.uk for further information, or visit our website at www.specialistparalegals.co.uk
