program running on your home computer

then you will encounter popups

 How do I avoid popups?

– Do not surf the internet

– Download the google toolbar – Install XP SP2

 Popups are still bound to happen

 The Remote Desktop client allows a user to

connect directly to a Windows XP computer

 It is paramount that you keep your home pc

safe and secure so that it does not

compromise your office pc and others that are on the network

How does RDP work?

 It is like you are sitting

at your office pc but you are at home…

 Using Remote Desktop,

you can run applications on a remote computer running Windows XP Professional from any other client running a Microsoft® Windows® operating system.

How to run Remote

Desktop

 You need to have your office pc setup for

this service, by default it is not turned on

 If you are running Windows XP at home, look

for the remote desktop connection through the menus

– Start – Programs – Accessories – Communication – Remote Desktop Client

 Go to - Run then type in ‘mstsc’  mstsc – is the acronym

for MicroSoft Terminal Services Client

 This is the quickest way

to start an RDP session without having to

navigate through the menus

 You will not be able to

Ctrl-Alt-Del while using Remote Desktop

– it will invoke it on your home PC

 To bring up the Task

Manager

– Go to Start –Run - taskmgr

your office PC

 Go to Start – Run and

type in cmd

 At the DOS prompt type

in:

– shutdown –r –t 10 – -r is for reboot

– -t is for the delay of xx seconds (in this case 10s)

So Slow…

 If the remote session is too slow, try

disabling some features that you don't need.

 You can reduce the color depth to 256 colors

and disable such features as window

animations or sound mapping to reduce the amount of information sent between the

remote and local computers and increase performance.

 We strongly recommend that you disable

printer mapping and drive mapping, which require a lot of bandwidth.

suggestions however, it is difficult to troubleshoot with such varying

Hints

 Reboot your office PC regularly to minimize

issues when connecting from home

– Remember to keep your PC on but do a restart on a regular basis

 Do not attempt to run RDP over a dialup

connection.

 Understand how to remotely

shutdown/restart your office PC from home.

 Take your documents home on a CD or USB

memory stick as a backup.

 A lack of preparation on your part does not

constitute an emergency on ours!
