• College is more difficult than high school. Be sure to make your courses your top priority.

•Use your checklist to determine which classes to enroll in. Take art courses from the beginning as many are only offered every 4th semester. Only take a few Gen Ed courses in your freshman year.

• Keep current with both art history and the latest art and design books & periodi-cals in the library. They can both inspire and help you see your place in the history of art.

• Start projects immediately after they have been assigned. If you plan for hurdles, then you will have time to develop your ideas and solve problems.

• Budget your time—do not use a deadline in one class as an excuse for late work in another. Be prompt.

• Prepare to transport and protect your work in bad weather. Rain is no excuse for late work.

• Take full advantage of the open studio hours after class.

• Be an engaged student. Pay attention, ask questions and engage in discussions and critiques.

• Being present in class means having supplies and being ready to work. • Avoid scheduling medical appointments during class time.

• Constructive criticism is not meant as an attack—it is to help you grow. Remem-ber this when critiquing other students’ work—be honest and objective.

• Know that you will need to budget for art supplies.

• Protect and save your best artwork for reviews. If you sell your artwork, be sure to photograph it first!

• Your portfolio is very important to potential employers, more so than grades. You need for it to be very professional.

• Talk to your professor if you are struggling or need advice on ways to improve your work.

• You are responsible for fulfilling your degree requirements, your adviser is only there to help you. Pay attention to course offering times.

Student Juries will be held in March (the week prior to Spring Break)

All students pursuing degrees in The Division of Fine Arts are required to participate in yearly Student Juries. It is an opportunity to get feedback from your faculty, to set goals for yourself, and to learn more about where you are in your de-velopment.

Visual Art students will have for review:

* 10 works from class assignments or self-

generated projects that fit into their style & thematic conceptual body of work

* A sketchbook

* Unofficial Transcript to check your GPA * Artist’s Resume

* An Artist Statement

tips for success:

1. Keep your best work in a safe and handy place.

2. Professional presentation—drawings, painting and photo-graphs should be matted; graphic design work mounted; and all work should be free of smudges and dust. 3. You will orally present your work so be ready to discuss

your artist decisions, concepts and goals.

4. Professional business casual attire is recommended. 5. Be prepared to answer questions from the faculty.

Senior Art Majors will submit a portfolio of their work and exhibit their work in a solo art show in conjunction with AR 490. The senior shows are the part of a capstone course for studio/graphic design art majors. The course consists of advanced studio work, weekly cri-tiques, and discussions with faculty and peers. Each student's independent work with a faculty adviser culminates in the senior exhibition at Vernon Nester Gallery or an alternative venue at the student’s expense. Seniors are responsible for developing a concept, creating a body of work and preparing it for installation, installing the art show, publicity, artist’s statement and reception. Senior artists will present works ranging from performance to paintings, prints, photography and sculpture.

"The senior show is a time of celebration of what you have done and what you will do in the future!"

the code:

The faculty of the Department of Visual Art wishes to instill the highest level of discipline and professionalism in future artists.

In that spirit, we have adopted the following: AN ARTIST’S CODE OF CONDUCT:

 I will honor my personal creativity by expressing myself to the greatest ability.

 I am an integral part of the creative process and will function as an inventive

collaborator. There is a time to give creative input and a time to take notes. I will learn the difference.

 I will be emotionally ready and physically prepared to work when class begins.

 I will bring solutions, not problems to every class project.

 I will be an engaged artist

 I will honor my creativity and give it an expression.

 I will respect my reasonability as an artist in the larger community.

 I will give constructive criticism during critiques. I will not use mean, hateful, or

unwarranted comments to my fellow artists.

Love the art in yourself and not yourself in the art.

He who works with his hands is a laborer. He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist.

St Fancis of Assisi

The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery.

Francis Bacon
