FORMED.ORG

This week we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. This week on Formed.org listen to Changed Forever: The Sacrament of Baptism. In this presentation renowned Catholic speaker and priest, Fr. Mike Schmitz explores the beautiful gift of the Sacrament of Baptism and how its cleansing waters give new life.

With a new year starting , why not resolve to develop a stron-ger relationship with God in 2021? Do you want to see more clearly how God is acting in your life? Have you felt discour-aged this past year and want to know how best to deal with it? It is normal to have ups and downs in our spiritual life. This program helps us understand how we can use these events to bring us closer to God.

We will meet once a week for 10 weeks starting the week of January 25th. Three class time offerings:

Mondays (1st day 1/25) 9:00-10:30 am St. James the Less, La Crosse

Tuesdays (1st day 1/26) 6:30-8:00 pm St. Patrick's, Onalaska Thursdays (1st day 1/28) 9:15-10:45 am St. Patrick's, Onalaska The cost for the class is $10.00. Registration is Required. To register call Amy at (608)783-0847 or dcapelli@charter.net Online registration available at www.stpatsonalaska.com This class can also be done as a Home Study.

SACRAMENTS & SERVICES

Baptism: Parents may request the baptism of their infants at least two months prior to the anticipated date of baptism. To request baptism, please call 782-0322.

Marriage: Couples who want to request the celebration of the

Sacrament of Marriage should contact the rector/pastor at the time of formal engagement or at least six months prior to the an-ticipated date of marriage. Weddings are not ordinarily celebrated during Lent.

Cathedral Prayer Chain: Notice to all Cathedral Parishioners.

The parish has a prayer chain that you may request prayer to be said and pray for the needs of others. Send your prayer requests to Mari at https://cathedralsjworkman.org/prayer-request/.

Wills & Estates: As you prayerfully execute your will or do

estate planning, please consider keeping the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman in mind. The most common and simplest way to include the parish in your last wishes is to include a bequest in your will or trust.

Musings

MONSIGNOR’S

Hospital Visits & Visitation of the Sick:

To secure a priest for unplanned or emergency admissions to a local hospital, it is vitally important that the patient, if possible, or a family member and/or friends contact the hospital pastoral care department to have an on call priest administer the sacraments. The on call priest is considered part of the pastoral team and does not count toward the “one visitor per day” rule (Gundersen).

If you become homebound because of illness or due to a post hospital stay and would like to be visited; or those who are seriously ill or have been sick for a long period of time should receive the Sacrament of the Sick and Holy Communion. Those with imminent preplanned hospital procedures should call the parish office to make arrange-ments for anointing. To the greatest extent possible one should be anointed apart from a hospital stay since there are such severe visiting restrictions.

If I have anything to say about it, great places!

It’s a New Year, with Covid and all still lurking around, but I refuse to let that stop us! The watchword for the year is: Epiphany! In my homily on Epiphany Sunday, I laid out my vision for the future of our parish. The Nativi-ty (Dec 25) is great but doesn’t do us any good if we don’t experience it and its results. The Epiphany, Christ’s mani-festation to the world, answers that indispensable need. The need being: Our encounter with Jesus! This happens through engagement. Epiphany is engagement—with God through one another. Epiphany is the joy of discov-ering Jesus. God does not zap us into a relationship with Him. It comes through others. How can they believe if they have not heard, and how can they hear if the Gospel has not been preached to them? I’m looking at the idea of preaching in a more encompassing, all-inclusive way to be understood as the communication of Christ from one to another. And, this is everybody’s concern and activity. Either Jesus-Salvation is the most important gift or it is not, and if it is, then wouldn’t one with burning zeal want to share that unbelievable, incredible treasure with oth-ers?! Certainly one of the very questions Jesus is going to ask us when we meet him face-to-Face is: Whom did you bring with you to Heaven, to Me? It is our personal, bap-tismal obligation to facilitate Epiphany (encounter with Jesus) for others.

My sense is that we have been in a lull. Yes, Covid seems to have become the reason to shut everything down. But ooking at the numbers (parish census) we’ve been in a downhill slide for some time. My Friends, the lull is over! We are now entering into the Springtime of new birth! These God-willing waning months of covid shutdown do not need to be a death sentence for us. Quite the oppo-site! The new birth of our parish requires a period of ges-tation. These cold dark months of winter will be a rich fertile time in which we together will envision, dream, strategize and plan practically how to launch out of Co-vid with full vigor and zeal! I don’t want to get to next Summer/Fall and ask: Well, now what should we do? Being engaged with all of this now will give us a strong sense of purpose, excitement and even now new life! To that end I am pulling together a group of people whom I have dubbed as the Dream Team. I am so eager to move forward with all of you. I can hardly wait! It’s going to be all hands on deck. I’m telling you, we are going to rock this! Rock it on the rock of our magnificent, glorious Church founded on the Rock/Peter’s confession of Faith. That’s the most awesome thing about our Faith: nothing is lacking to us! So, the sky is the limit and I welcome your ideas, input, and involvement. We are going to be that shining gem in the Crown of our Lord’s Kingdom! But, I do want to say one extremely important thing: this whole thing will only work if each of us commits to grow in greater holiness through the Eucharist, the devotional life, and the practice of the virtues. Our Emmaus Hearts must be burning with Love which radiates outward to others! St. Joseph the Workman, pray for us!
