Volume 69, Issue 31 May 25, 2018
Earlier this week, NASA discovered a three-foot chunk of sedi-mentary rock was dis-covered on Mars using the Mars Curiosity Rov-er that has been on Mars for about six years. This chunk of rock was then named after Duluth, Minnesota, because of the similarities between the two.
“Duluth” is a 3.5 bil-lion year old rock that formed in an ancient lake by sediments dropping to the floor of the lake. The connection with the Du-luth rock and DuDu-luth, Minnesota, is a freshwa-ter lake. One of them formed because of a
freshwater lake, that was there billions of years ago, but now has dried up, and the other is on the shore of one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world.
The last connection between the two is they both share a geological feature: volcanic rock. Duluth, Minnesota, lies Northwestern Track
and Field’s season is in the home stretch, finish-ing the season with the conference, region, sec-tional, and eventually state meets.
After a night of bat-tling the highly talented Bloomer team, North-western girls ended up second place, and North-western boys in third place at the conference meet in Bloomer on May 15.
Conference champi-ons from northwestern included Abby Nelson in the pole vault, Joey Pe-terson in the pole vault,
Paige Johnson in the
800m, Donny Pooler in the 800m, the girls
4x400m team, Journey Amundson in the triple jump, Katie Lundeen in the shot-put.
Each first place finish earns 10 points toward the team score and title
of
all-
confer-ence. Northwestern girls finished 146 points (29 points behind Bloomer), and boys with 129 points (5 points behind second place).
The next highly antici-pated event in the track and field schedule is re-gionals which took place Monday the 21 in
Cam-eron.
Regionals was the most intense competition faced by the athletes so far this year, as they are competing for a minimal number of spots. Some competitors truly left all of their guts (and their afternoon lunch) on the track.
The top four finishers in each event at region-als have the honor of moving on to compete in the sectional level which took place yesterday, Thursday, May 24 in Colby.

on a crystalline volcanic rock that stretches along the northern shore of Lake Superior. The for-mation of the volcanic
rock shows how the Du-luth rock was formed. The next step that the people working with the Mars Curiosity Rover hope to do is retrieve a sample of the rock. Once
it’s retrieved it will be stored in a laboratory on the rover. Then it will be analyzed, so NASA can get full detail of the rock. They have already fired laser beams at two
loca-tions on the Duluth rock. This is to identify the composition of the rock, along with soil samples.

Cheese or chocolate It’s that time of the
year again when every-one is back out on the lakes enjoying the nice weather. Whether you are fishing, tubing, water skiing, or just taking a cruise, boat etiquette and safety is always some-thing to keep in mind. Imagine this, you are cruising through a chan-nel and to avoid striking another oncoming boat, you swing into shallow waters while still travel-ing at a pretty fast speed. It’s good that you avoid a collision, but look how much wake you’ve churned up for the other boaters. If you cause other boats to bump into each other, or cause anyone damage to
their property, you’re the one on the hook for their dam-ages. Big wakes equal bad news. A few safety tips can be more helpful than you think, espe-cially when you find yourself in sticky situations. For exam-ple, don’t overesti-mate your abilities. Showing off, doing dangerous stunts, or overestimating your swimming abilities can spell disaster when boating.
Last year nearly 4,064 boating accidents oc-curred in the United States, 610 of the acci-dents resulted in fatali-ties. Operator inattention, improper lookout,
opera-tor inexperience, exces-sive speed, and the lead-ing contributor, alcohol are all factors to these accidents. Out of all the victims involved in the accidents, 78% of them drowned, and of those who drowned, 84% of
the victims were not wearing life jackets. So next time you head out onto the water, make sure you practice good boating safety.
