Certificate of Achievement Computer Information Systems New Program – Career Technical Education (CTE)

1. Program Goals and Objectives: Computer Information Systems (CIS) provides a background in the field of technology and computing and how it relates to business to produce quality information. The CIS degree prepares students for entry level positions as computer support specialist, user support specialist, systems analyst, network support specialist, database administrators, software testers or application development. The program focuses on

• Describe the role of and explain the value of operating systems, databases, programming, information systems, and project management in IT.

• Design, implement, evaluate and communicate a computer-based system, process, component, or program to meet the desired needs.

• Analyze technical problems to identify and define the computer requirements appropriate to their solution.

• Implement database design techniques in the context of software development.

• Analyze the local and global impact of computing and security on individuals, organizations, and society.

• Demonstrate communication, teamwork, and project-based learning skills necessary to function effectively on teams to accomplish a common goal.

2. Catalog Description

Computer Information Systems is a series of courses that bind both technology and business to produce quality information for an organization. CIS emphasizes the technology side of an organization’s information system. Typical employment opportunities include computer support specialist, user support specialist, systems analyst, network support specialist, database administrators, software testers and application development.

Key areas of focus in this degree are: Computer Information Systems; Computer

Programming; Systems Analysis and Design; System Development; Database Management; Data Communications; Security; and Business Communications.

Students planning to focus on technology and computing in Information Systems are recommended earn an A.S. in Computer Information Systems. This degree is ideal for

students eager to break into the field of computing by earning a career technical certificate or degree while completing transferable coursework.

4. Master Planning

The Computer Information Systems (CIS) certificate is a series of courses that bind both

technology and business to produce quality information for an organization. CIS emphasizes the technology side of an organization’s information system. This degree aligns with the college’s mission statement by providing a degree with technical training that is in high demand for the county of San Diego. Information Systems and related occupations are growing at a steady rate of over 18.8% with very high median incomes of 16.00 to 37.00 dollars per hour. Typical

employment opportunities include computer support specialist, user support specialist, systems analyst, network support specialist, software testers and application development. Additionally our student population includes a large percentage of military retraining to reenter the job market. This degree is ideal for military vets or any job reentry student to allow them to augment their experience and readily gain employment in entry level positions in the field of computing. With additional experience and education the student can advance to project management, systems analyst and various senior positions in the field of IT. Furthermore, the CIS degree examines security and ethical issues in the field of computing to promote students to live responsibility, effectively, and creatively in an interdependent and changing world.

The CIS certificate aligns with the objective and conditions of higher education and community college education in California statewide master plan. It aligns by providing a degree that offers both academic rigor and transferability in coursework as well as vocational instruction to assist students both older and younger to gain valuable skills to secure entry level employment in the field of computer information systems.

Enrollment Justification is based on historical completion rates by academic year by the top code of 0702 – Information Systems at the cccco.edu Chancellor’s Data Mart. Along with this the labor market indicators state over an 18% growth in these fields in San Diego County. The combination of growth in the field and growth in annual completion indicates this is a strong program with plenty of room for growth.

6. Place of Program in Curriculum/Similar Programs

This program uses many of the courses currently found in the CSCI, CSIT, and CSNT disciplines. It does not replace any programs in the curriculum. However, it organizes the courses into a new degree that will transfer to many 4 year universities in California.

7. Similar Programs at Other Colleges in Service Area

There are 64 schools around California that offer information systems training. In the state, these schools are located in 48 cities. In particular, San Diego and San Francisco are the two cities with the greatest concentration of accredited information systems schools in CA.\

However, in the San Diego area, there are no state funded schools that offer a 2 year degree for transfer in Information Systems.
