St. John’s, Peggy’s Cove

Opening hymn: CP 505 Be Thou My Vision

(to sing along please visit our website for music as recorded by Gina) Be Thou my vision, oh Lord of my heart

Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art Thou my best thought by day or by night Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light Be Thou my wisdom and Thou my true word I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord Thou my great Father, thine own may I be, Thou in me dwelling and I one with Thee.

Riches I heed not, nor the world`s empty praise; Thou mine inheritance, now and always;

Thou and thou only first in my heart, High Kind of heaven, my treasure thou art. High King of Heaven my victory won

May I reach heaven's joys, oh, bright heaven's sun Heart of my own heart whatever befall

Still be my vision, oh Ruler of all.

Officiant: The sacrifice of God is a broken spirit: a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Psalm 51.18

Officiant: Dear friends in Christ, as we prepare to worship almighty God, let us with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. Let us confess our sins against God our neighbour.

Together: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

The priest: Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

People Amen.

Officiant: Lord, open our lips

People: And our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Officiant: O God, make speed to save us.

People: O Lord, make haste to help us.

All Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Alleluia!

The Invitatory: Alleluia, The spirit of the Lord renews the face of the earth: O come let us worship.

Venite Psalm 95.1–7: Together: Come, let us sing to the Lord; * let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving * and raise a loud shout to him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, * and a great king above all gods. In his hand are the caverns of the earth, * and the heights of the hills are his also. The sea is his for he made it, * and his hands have moulded the dry land. Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, * and kneel before the Lord our maker. For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. * Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

The Proclamation of the Word First Reading Isaiah 44:6-8

Reader: A reading from…

Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god.

Who is like me? Let them proclaim it, let them declare and set it forth before me. Who has announced from of old the things to come? Let them tell us what is yet to be. Do not fear, or be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it?

You are my witnesses! Is there any god besides me? There is no other rock; I know not one. Reader: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God! Amen Psalm 86:11-17

11 Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; *knit my heart to you that I may fear your Name.

12 I will thank you, O LORD my God, with all my heart, *and glorify your Name for evermore.

13 For great is your love toward me; *you have delivered me from the nethermost Pit. 14 The arrogant rise up against me, O God, and a band of violent men seeks my life; *they

have not set you before their eyes.

15 But you, O LORD, are gracious and full of compassion, *slow to anger, and full of kindness and truth.

16 Turn to me and have mercy upon me; *give your strength to your servant; and save the child of your handmaid.

17 Show me a sign of your favor, so that those who hate me may see it and be ashamed; * because you, O LORD, have helped me and comforted me.

Epistle Romans 8:12-25

Reader: A reading from…

Brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh-- for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have

received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ-- if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! Amen

Gradual Hymn: CP 455 Dear God, Compassionate and Kind

Dear God, compassionate and kind, Forgive our foolish ways.

Reclothe us in our rightful mind, In purer lives thy service find, In deeper reverence, praise, In deeper reverence, praise.

In the simple trust like theirs who heard, Beside the Syrian sea,

The gracious calling of the Lord, Let us, like them, without a word, Rise up and follow thee,

Rise up and follow thee! O Sabbath rest be Galilee! O calm of hills above,

Where Jesus knelt to share thee The silence of eternity

Interpreted by love, Interpreted by love!

Drop they still dews of quietness Till all our strivings cease;

Take from our souls the strain and stress, And let our ordered lives confess

The beauty of thy peace, The beauty of thy peace.

Breathe through the heats of our desire Thy coolness and thy balm;

Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;

Speak through the earthquake, wind and fire, O still small voice of calm,

O still small voice of calm.

Gospel Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43

Reader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to… People: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ

Jesus put before the crowd another parable: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. And the slaves of the

(6)

householder came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?’ He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The slaves said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ But he replied, ‘No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’”

Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples approached him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.” He answered, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are

angels. Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen!”

Reader: The Gospel of Christ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Reflection: Reflect on the Gospel several minutes. Did anything stand out for you while you read the Gospel? What does the story have to say to you today?

Offertory Hymn: CP 354 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,

Tune my heart to sing Thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious measure, Sung by flaming tongues above. O the vast, the boundless treasure Of my God`s unchanging love. Here I Make faith`s affirmation Thus far by thy help I`ve come, And I hope, by thy compassion, Safely to arrive at home.

Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wandering from the fold of God; He, to recuse me from danger, Interposed his precious blood.

(7)

O to grace how great a debtor Daily I’m constrained to be! Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love; Take my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for Thy courts above.

The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
