Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (BSB41415) is a nationally accredited qualification. Participants:

This course is aimed at those currently working in the Australian union movement, such as, officials,

organisers, delegates and health and safety representatives or trainers wishing to increase their knowledge and involvement in health and safety application and policy-making in Australian workplaces.

Participants must be nominated by a union (or be a union member) to enroll. Additionally, it is recommended they have:

• Access to a workplace for completion of some assessment activities • Good reading, writing, computing and internet skills

• Email and web access, a personal computer and telephone Aims and Learning Outcomes:

• To give participants an understanding of a proactive and preventative approach to work health and safety.

• To build health and safety knowledge and experience of employees, health and safety

representatives, health and safety officers, other health and safety practitioners and health and safety trainers.

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Understand the union approach to work health and safety;

Explore the link between organising and health and safety structures and issues in the workplace; • Familiarise themselves with health and safety laws and the rights they contain;

• Understand what is involved in hazard identification and the effective control of the hazards; • Critically examine the concept of risk assessment and management systems;

Explore the role unions can play in a health and safety consultative process. Delivery & Assessment:

The course comprises:

• 6 days of face-to-face delivery, split into 2 Workshops with approximately 1 month between, • Learner Guide reading; Participants need to allocate time at work and at home.

To achieve Certificate IV in WHS, participants complete a number of assessment tasks. Some tasks will be completed during the Workshops.

Participants need to allocate time at work and home to complete remaining tasks.

Participants complete each assessment task, sign the front cover and submit to their educator or email orgcentre@actu.org.au Educators will assess and provide feedback.

Participants have the right to appeal against assessment decisions made by an Educator. They should follow the Appeals Procedure available on the website. All discussion and outcomes will be documented in the participant file.

Participants gaining BSB41415 Certificate IV in WHS may wish to continue their studies in the Diploma of Work Health and Safety (BSB51315).

Another option is for participants to complete their Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110) and become a qualified health and safety trainer.

Duration:

Enrolment in the qualification is for 12 months.

If needing more time to complete assessment, participants may request an extension – up to a maximum of 2 years from the date of enrolment.

After 2 years, if participants wish to complete outstanding work, they must re-enrol and pay for the course again.

Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (BSB41415) is a nationally accredited qualification, comprising 10 units of competency.

BSBWHS402 Assist with compliance with WHS laws

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assist with providing advice about the legislative duties, rights and obligations of individuals and parties prescribed in WHS laws

Elements:

1. Assist with determining the legal framework for WHS in the workplace 2. Assist with providing advice on WHA compliance

3. Assist with WHS compliance measures CORE

BSBWHS403 Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS consultation and participation processes

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to contribute to the implementation and maintenance of WHS consultation and participation processes in the workplace as part of a systematic approach to managing WHS

Elements:

1 Identify individuals and parties involved in WHS consultation and participation processes 2 Contribute to WHS consultation and participation processes

3 Contribute to processes for communicating and sharing WHS information and data

4 Contribute to identifying and meeting training requirements for effective WHS consultation and participation

BSBWHS404 Contribute to WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to contribute to identifying work health and safety hazards; assessing WHS risks; and developing, implementing and evaluating risk controls appropriate to won job role and work area

BSBWHS405 Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS management systems

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to contribute to the implementation and maintenance of a work health and safety management system (WHSMS) as it applies to own work area and job role

BSBWHS406 Assist with responding to incidents

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assist with actions and activities performed in response to incidents

This unit covers the competency required to implement workplace emergency prevention procedures within a workplace or a defined group of workplaces.

2. Ensure appropriate hazard analysis is undertaken and results are implemented

3. Ensure workplace emergency protection systems, emergency control equipment and evacuation systems remain effective

BSBLDR401 Communicate effectively as a workplace leader

This unit covers the competency required to communicate effectively as a workplace leader, including understanding the context, choosing methods of communication to suit the audience, and following up. Elements:

ELECTIVE

BSBFLM303 Contribute to effective workplace relationships

This unit covers the competency required to gather information and maintain effective relationships and networks, with particular regard to communication and representation.

3. Identify and use networks and relationships 4. Contribute to positive outcomes
