Comprehensive Systematic Review Training

This program is designed to prepare researchers and clinicians to develop, conduct and report comprehensive systematic reviews of evidence. The program is designed for healthcare professionals who want to play a leading role in developing clinical evidence based on qualitative or quantitative research findings. The aim is that the participants develop a protocol for a systematic review, undertake the review and submit it for publication within a year.

This course is offered in cooperation between Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), Adelaide, Australia and Centre for Clinical Guidelines – Danish National Clearinghouse for Nursing.

During the course you will be introduced to the Cochrane Review Manager software and The Joanna Briggs Institute SUMARI software. This program has been undertaken by over 1000 participants from over 35 countries and continues to be their most

successful.

Participants who successfully complete the program are certified by the Joanna Briggs Institute as competent in the systematic review process. Participants can become certified as quantitative systematic reviewers, qualitative systematic reviewers or comprehensive systematic reviewers.

JBI’s Comprehensive Systematic Review Training Program has 5 modules:

Module 1: Introduction to EBHC and the Systematic Review of Evidence

Module 2: Systematic Review of quantitative data from experimental Studies in a Cochrane Review of Effects

Module 3: Systematic Review of quantitative data from experimental, nonexperimental, diagnostic and prognostic studies

Module 4: The Systematic Review of Evidence generated by qualitative research, narrative and text

Module 5: The Systematic review of economic evidence

In week 10/2012 we will be offering the module 1, 3 and 4.

Course team: Dr. Carol Pellowe (Kings College, London),

Dr. Preben U. Pedersen, Mr Palle Larsen, phd-student (Centre for Clinical Guidelines – Danish National Clearinghouse for Nursing, Aarhus).

.

Module 1: Introduction to EBHC and the Systematic Review of Evidence

Program Overview: This module consists of eight hours pre-course reading and one (1) seven-hour study day. This module is a foundation to the subsequent modules and is a pre-requisite for enrolment in modules 2-5. The program is designed for graduates in health information management, allied health disciplines (such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, podiatry, radiography, etc), nursing and medicine who have a sound knowledge of research methods. The program offers participants the opportunity to examine the history and development of evidence-based healthcare and the

processes of evidence-based practice. The program has a process orientation whereby the participant and Joanna Briggs Institute facilitators become active participants in meeting learning needs.

Underpinning this approach is clearly defined content contained in extensive printed course material..

Aims: To enable participants to develop a comprehensive understanding of the purposes and principles of evidence based healthcare.

Objectives: To prepare participants to:

• describe the origins and development of evidence based healthcare,

(3)

• critique the role of evidence in contemporary healthcare practice,

• describe and discuss the systematic review process, and

• develop a systematic review protocol.

Expected Professional Outcomes: Participants, who complete this program, will be able to identify sources of evidence of the feasibility, appropriateness, meaningfulness and effectiveness of health activities and interventions, and will be able to apply them in developing a systematic review protocol. They will recognise the importance of evidence in professional practice and have a commitment to the evidence based practice

approach.

Assessment: Successful completion of a thirty (30) minute multiple choice and short answer knowledge test.

Module 3: Systematic Review of quantitative data from experimental, non-experimental,

diagnostic and prognostic studies

Program Overview: This module consists of eight hours pre-course reading and two (2) seven-hour study days. Participants must complete the Introduction to Evidence based Healthcare module before they may enrol in this module.

The program is designed for graduates in health information management, allied health disciplines (such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, podiatry, radiography, etc), nursing and medicine who have a sound knowledge of quantitative research methods.

The program gives participants skills in the systematic review of evidence generated by non-experimental studies, diagnostic studies, and prognostic studies.

The program has a hands-on orientation and includes computer laboratory sessions using the JBI-SUMARI software. Underpinning this approach is clearly defined content

contained in extensive printed course material.

Aims: To enable participants to critically appraise, extract and pool quantitative evidence generated by non-experimental designs, diagnostic studies and prognostic studies.

Objectives: To prepare participants to:

• utilise the JBI SUMARI software,

• critically appraise the results of studies of a number of non-experimental designs, diagnostic studies and prognostic studies,

• extract data from quantitative, non-experimental studies, diagnostic studies and prognostic studies pool the results of homogenous studies.

Expected Professional Outcomes: Participants who complete this program will understand how to conduct a systematic review of evidence generated by

nonexperimental studies, diagnostic studies and prognostic studies.

Assessment: Development of a draft review protocol; individual presentation of review protocol.

Module 4: The Systematic Review of Evidence generated by qualitative research, narrative and text

Program Overview: This module consists of eight hours pre-course reading and two (2) seven-hour study days. Participants must complete the Introduction to Evidence based Healthcare module before they may enrol in this module.

The program is designed for graduates in health information management, allied health disciplines (such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, podiatry, radiography, etc),
