In order to get you on-line and enjoying the service as quickly and as painlessly as possible, please make sure you have the following information and software available when setting up your new connection. Important items and information you’ll need:

Credentials:

• Your network username • Your network password Critical Software:

• Anti-virus software – updated and scheduled to run a daily check. Users with no up to date anti-virus protection may be banned from using the service

• System Updates – please ensure your operating system is fully updated (ie. Windows Updates for Windows, Software Updates for MACs) Hardware Requirements:

• A CAT5 network cable, as provided by the University of Worcester. • A working network card in your PC/

MAC or laptop

• Please make sure the PC/MAC is set to ‘DHCP’ that is ‘Obtain an IP address automatically’ (as well as DNS Servers)

Getting On-Line

Step 1: Your computer’s network card

must be connected to the network wall socket in the University halls of residence using the cable provided.

ResNet

Quick Start Guide

A. Network cables have end connectors like these

B. Network wall point will look like this C. The corresponding socket on your PC

or Mac will look something like this

Step 2: When you connect the

network cable to your network point and computer, your computer should automatically connect to ResNet. We recommend Windows users select ‘Public’ when prompted by the network wizard.

Getting help

If you are experiencing problems connecting to ResNet and have access to the online Student Application Portal please follow the onscreen instructions for logging a support call, otherwise contact the ICT Service Desk on 01905

857500. In each instance you should

provide the following information: • Your name

• Your student number • A contact number • Halls of residence • Flat and room number

• A brief description of the problem • Type of computer (PC, laptop, Mac)

and its operating system (e.g. Windows 7, Mac OSX)

Step 3: Launch your web browser. Try

visiting any website and you should be redirected to our ResNet page. Enter your username and password and click ‘Log In’

Step 4: Once connected, your computer

will remain on-line for as long as it’s being used; after a period of inactivity you will be disconnected and you will need to login again in the same way.

Q. Can I access ResNet wirelessly? A. No. ResNet is a wired connection

to student rooms, designed to offer a faster, more reliable and secure network connection.

Q. I want to access Wireless in my Halls of Residence, is this possible? A. Wireless is available in the living areas

and, depending on its location, may be available in your room. You can access Wireless by selecting eduroam which is a free service to use for all members of staff and students.

Please note: Wireless is not part of ResNet and will have a different level of access, you may find that some things work on a wired ResNet connection that do not work on Wireless.

Q. ResNet is not working in my room A. Make sure you have read the setup

instructions and the above FAQs. You can try connecting in your flatmates room, and if that is successful then your ResNet port may be disabled or damaged. Please contact the ICT Service Desk to resolve this. Q. Is my computer safe from hackers

and viruses while I am connected to ResNet?

A. No! You are responsible for securing

your computer from hackers, viruses and other malicious software.

The University of Worcester uses a variety of tools and measures to detect and prevent viruses and hackers from compromising computers on the University’s network. Unfortunately, these measures cannot fully protect your computer. You must also take steps to secure your computer. Q. Can ICT Services fix my broken PC

or laptop?

A. ICT Service Desk can offer advice and

guidance with broken PC equipment but they are unable to fix hardware issues. ICT Services do not supply copies of commercial software (e.g. Microsoft Windows).

Q. Can I access the Student App Portal through ResNet

A. Yes. Please go to the main University

website (www.worc.ac.uk) and select the Students link from the top of the page. On the next page you can log in to the Student Application Portal. You will require your username and password. Q. Can I use my webcam on ResNet? A. Webcams will function over

ResNet, although it depends on the application you are using. Skype has been tested and works.

Q. My program does not work through ResNet

A. To access the internet via ResNet all

traffic goes through the University Firewall. By default access is denied unless specifically requested. The most popular applications should work, as they have already been requested, but some may not, either for security reasons or because no request to open the ports has been made.

For further advice contact ICT Support. Q. Can I use Xbox/Playstation

on ResNet

A. Yes. Authentication of the Xbox/

Playstation is done via the MAC address of the device. If you have a problem then please log a call with the Service Desk, providing contact details and the MAC address of the device. Please note ResNet will be detected as running ‘Strict NAT’, which limits what is possible on the network. Q. Can I connect to gaming servers? A. Some online games may work, but

we do not support online gaming and you may find you cannot connect to gaming servers. Please log a job with your contact details and the details of the ports the gaming server uses. We can then confirm if the ports are already open. If they are not open, we will assess if we can open them based on the University’s security policy.

Please note: - it is prohibited to use ResNet for financial gain (poker websites etc.)

Q. What is peer-to-peer (P2P) software and can I use it on ResNet

A. Examples of peer to peer software

include Kazaa, Limewire, E-mule/E-donkey, Soul Seek, Acquisition and Bittorrent. There are many others. These applications can be used to illegally download copyrighted files such as music, films and games and can slow down the ResNet service for all users. For this reason peer-to-peer software is forbidden on ResNet. Q. Can I connect network devices to

ResNet i.e. Wireless access point, switch, hub?

A. ResNet does not allow any network

devices to be connected. If you try this, your port may be disabled. Network bridging on machines is also forbidden.

Use of the network for any illegal activity, including violation

of Copyright, will result in disciplinary action. This also includes hacking, spamming, fraud, and spreading viruses.
