The Trinity Window – October

2015

Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church  292 Orange St. New Haven, CT. 06510 Phone: 203.787.6521 – Fax: 203.776.7915 www.TrinityLutheranNH.org – office@TrinityLutheranNH.org

From the Pastor

When you come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you for an inheritance and have taken possession of it and live in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from your land that the LORD your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket...Then the priest shall take the basket from your hand and set it down before the altar of the LORD your God. (Deuteronomy 26:1-4)

In October, Connecticut is bursting with the bounty of fall--corn, tomatoes, apples, pumpkins, and squash--and sometimes all this bounty can become too much! Those of you with a garden know the joy and relief of sharing fresh vegetables and fruits with those around you.

The Bible asks all of us to recognize the incredible bounty God has given us. While not all of us have vegetable gardens, the Small Catechism reminds us that each of us has been blessed with body and soul, reason and senses, clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, family and children, all our goods, and all we need to support this body and life. More than that, as Christians, we have been given Eternal Life and salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ! What a bounty of goodness!

One important way to recognize this generous goodness is by returning the "first fruits" of our life back to him who gave them--traditionally a "tithe" or one-tenth. We honor God by simply returning a portion to his service of what is already his.

Over the next weeks, I invite you to prayerfully consider returning the "first fruits" of your life back to him to who gave them. In this Window, and at Church, you will find a Giving Plan/Pledge Card for 2015-16. Please complete and return by Consecration Sunday, November 22, where they will be placed upon the altar as our "first fruits".

Also mark your calendars for these other October blessings:

+ Our 150th Anniversary Banquet, after

worship on October 4. Your ticket purchase helps

with our window and steeple repairs!

+ Operation Christmas Child's

Shoebox-Packing Party, after worship October 18.

Haven Lutheran Potluck at Bethesda Lutheran,

Operation Christmas Child

Yet in this house, an earthly frame, Jesus the children is blessing Hither we come to praise his name. Faith in our savior confessing. Jesus to us his spirit sent, making with us his covenant, Granting his children the kingdom. LBW 365

By the time you read my article summer will be officially behind us and enter fall. School is back in session. Vacations for the most part are over with. Activities at Trinity are back in full swing. Sunday School, choir, Coffee Hour (with coffee) and celebrating 150 years of proclaiming God’s Gospel.

October is also an exciting time for operation Christmas Child. On Sunday, October 11th Cecil Pollydore, Northeast Regional manager for Operation Christmas Child will present a temple talk during worship. He will also be involved with our Sunday School and will be our guest at an extended coffee hour following worship. Sunday, October 18th is our OCC packing party after worship. This is always a fun activity where we get to see

Christmas through the eyes of a child. The children that we pack boxes for have never known the joy of receiving a gift. Along with these shoe box gifts they are given a chance to learn about Jesus through The Greatest Journey Gospel opportunity.

Thank you to everyone who has been leaving donations in the OCC box in the narthex and who have made monetary donations. We are still in need of more items for the packing party. You can give me a call or talk to me on Sunday mornings. Or call the church office, Pat has a copy of the list. Again, Thank you for your continued support.

National Collection week is November 16th through the 23rd. We are still in need of volunteers for this week. There is a sign up sheet on the OCC board next to the Mission Mart. Any time you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Yours for the children Barbara Mourer

HOLY SMOKES!

THANK YOU! We want to thank all of you who helped make this year’s 3 Holy Smokes “Picnics” a success. We had an average of 30 people for each of our three events. We were blessed with great weather for two of the gatherings. A bit of rain and thunder forced our final outing into the basement but it didn’t dampen the spirits of those attending. Thanks for all of the delicious food that you provided. Special Thanks to Fred Sundermann who provided the hot dogs and kielbasa in June and September, Scott Prud’homme who provided the hamburgers in August, to our Grill Masters – Karen Chaffin, Heidi Edgerton and Justin Handy, and to Pat Sundermann for organizing and making sure that everything went smoothly.

Seafarers International House

Ship arrivals slowed down here in New

Haven and New London the end of August

and beginning of September. I guess, for

now, we are ready for winter with piles of

salt, our tanks are loaded with oil for winter

and we have enough steel products for

building. But today things are busy again as I

have 3 ships waiting for ship visits and

shopping trips.

The M/V Azteca docked here with a Filipino

crew of 19. It was the maiden voyage of

their ship and first trip to the U. S. Crew

were anxious to go ashore but because of

the scheduling of 12 pallets of provisions

and other needed supplies only 5 were able

to get off. However, the 5 went off with a

list and I had a shopping list another day and

all was accomplished. Pastor Mills

celebrated communion mass for the crew

and later we celebrated together with a

special meal. Don’t we always gather

around food? We hope to see the Azteca

again in New Haven, they were a wonderful

group of men.

Just a reminder that we will again be filling

Christmas‐at‐Sea satchels. It is not too early

to watch for sales of the items to be

included in the satchels:

x

One sweatshirt – size L or XL

x Three pairs of socks – thermal or

white gym

x

One casual T‐shirt – sizes M‐L

x

One knit winter cap

x

One can of nuts or chocolate bar

x

A Christmas card from you

I will begin distributing these bags to ships

in the beginning of December. It is a

wonderful way to remember seafarers who

will be away from home and family during

the holidays.

Thank you.

Ruth Setaro, Chaplain

New Members Lunch

Are you interested in Affirming your Baptism and becoming a member of Trinity? Join us for conversation and lunch after worship on Sunday, October 11th . Please RSVP to Pastor Mills.

Altar Guild and Ushers Needed

The Altar Guild is looking for volunteers to set up communion before worship and then clean up after worship. There are teams of two each month, men are welcome to join. If you are interested, please speak with Marlene Warsawski, chair of the Altar Guild or call the church office.

Volunteers are needed as ushers too, a team of ushers is made up of four members. Currently we have three teams and four would be ideal, then each team would serve once a month. If you are

interested, please speak with Debra Cakal, Head Usher or call the church office.

The Power of Change

Literally.

Two children in Hamden, CT are collecting coins for our kids. They are doing it for a couple of years. It’s the third time that they came with their donation box. It’s just marvelous. We thank them.

What will it mount to??!!?!?! That was the big question today.

It will pay for 2 ½ months of bus fare for one of our girls. From home to school and back. That’s what it mounts to. Getting to and from school will bring lasting CHANGE in the life of our Dalit girl.

This month we are starting the “Mahanadi Program”, an automated giving program to encourage convenient and consistent financial support for our children at SIMONS HOUSE and HOUSE OF HOPE (and beyond).

$20, $50, $100 … per month … it doesn’t take much to change a life in India (see above).

Please consider participation. Change your life and a life in India.

(Thank you to all who support SIMON’S HOUSE andHOUSE OF HOPE already.)

ALIT.

Named after the ‘Great River’ (maha = great, nadi =river) that runs through Odisha, India. The river brings fertile soil to the valleys and water to the land.

The Mahanadi Program

R

EACH

D

ALITenables you to create your own individual giving program to support the children at SIMON’S HOUSE andHOUSE OF HOPE, Community

Development Programs (women’s groups, blankets and sweaters against the winter cold in the slums of India etc.) and Leadership Training.

How

The Mahanadi Program enables you to authorize

monthly withdrawals (either 1st or 15th of the month) from your checking or savings account. You select the amount and the date on which you want your gift to be made. Your gift will be deposited into the REACH DALIT bank account on the same day

that it is withdrawn from your checking or savings account.

You designate whether you want all or part of the gift to go to SIMON’S HOUSE, Community

Development or Leadership Training.

Benefits

The Mahanadi Program goes to work immediately

to support the program of your choice.

Moreover, your gift costs less to process than a first class stamp!

Convenient

An automated giving program gives stability to the children at SIMON’S HOUSE and beyond, it brings

relief to local communities and guarantees funding for much needed leadership training.

You won’t have to worry about a forgotten

donation or a large “catch-up” donation at the end of the year. It’s safe and easy – and flexible. You can change your support at any time.

Getting Started

Just complete the attached Authorization Form, sign it and add a voided check.

R

EACH

D

ALIT partners with Vanco Payment Solutions.

Importance

There are dedicated people in India who do the actual work: take care of the kids, run slum programs and work with community leaders. The work is ongoing. You can make ‘the water flowing and nourish the land’.

Easy Pay. EasyTithe.

by Jason Esch

“Dishonest money dwindles away, but he who gathers money little by little makes it grow.” -Proverbs 13:11

Trinity is looking to add electronic giving as a payment method through software called

EasyTithe. So, what is EasyTithe? How does it work? I've compiled a list of some Frequently Asked Questions below:

EasyTithe FAQ What is EasyTithe?

EasyTithe is a secure, comprehensive tool that will allow Trinity to accept, manage, track, and

provide reports for on-line donations. Individuals can set-up recurring payments, one-time donations, and even contribute their donations to specific fund(s).

How does EasyTithe work?

Individuals simply go on-line to the specific link setup by EasyTithe, and then decide how they want to donate. You can setup a recurring payment, one-time donation, pay by debit or credit card, and even select the specific fund you would like to donate too. There is even the option for giving via smartphone application available on Android and the (Apple) App Store.

Will we still be allowed use checks or cash in the offering?

Yes. Donations by check or cash will not change at all. We would just be allowing the

opportunity for those who wish to manage their giving electronically to do so; similar to how many people use online bill pay.

Is EasyTithe Secure?

Yes. EasyTithe is a highly respected company, and all of their payment methods are secure.

What are some of the benefits of EasyTithe?

It will not only allow Trinity to run additional reports and track donor contributions, but will provide even greater forecasting ability. Trinity has the option to do such things as set up an online store for Trinity to sell items, a Facebook and Trinity website link for online giving, and even mobile payment processing---all at a very low cost to Trinity.

The trends in online giving have dramatically increased over the years. More and more people are connecting and fundraising online through Social Media, as well as using smartphone

(22)

showing charitable giving in 2014 increased to $358 billion, the largest in its 60 year reporting history.

Your feedback on this is welcomed and greatly appreciated! Please feel free to see Pastor or myself with any questions. There is also plenty of information on the company website, located here: www.easytithe.com
